Satco Lighting S9498 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Satco S9498 MR16 work in a line-voltage track head, or does it need a transformer?
The S9498 is a 12 volt AC/DC lamp, so it only works downstream of a low voltage transformer. Drop it into a 120V line-voltage MR16 fixture and it won't light. Check the fixture or the housing label for a magnetic or electronic transformer first. The lamp draws 0.542A at 6.5W on 12V, 60Hz, which is what you size the transformer load against when you're loading several heads on one supply.
2) Can I put this LED MR16 in a sealed or enclosed recessed can?
Yes, the 6.5W MR16 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed or gasketed fixture is allowed. It also carries a damp location rating, which covers covered exterior soffits, bathrooms and canopies, but not direct exposure to rain or spray.
3) What halogen MR16 does the Satco S9498 replace, and will the room look as bright?
It's a 50W halogen replacement at 6.5 watts, putting out 500 lumens. If you're swapping a whole run of 50W MR16 heads, the light level holds and the connected load drops to about an eighth of what it was. Colour is the bigger change: at 4000K this reads cool white, noticeably whiter than the warm halogen it comes out of, so do a full room rather than mixing new and old heads on the same ceiling.
4) Will this Satco MR16 dim on my existing low voltage dimmer?
The lamp itself is dimmable, but on a 12 volt system the dimming behaviour is set by the transformer as much as the lamp. Magnetic transformers want a magnetic low voltage (MLV) dimmer, electronic transformers want an electronic low voltage (ELV) dimmer, and an old incandescent dimmer left in place with a 6.5W load is the usual cause of flicker or drop-out, since one lamp draws only 0.542A. Match the dimmer to the transformer type and keep the minimum load in mind before you order.
5) Can I mount these MR16 heads pointing up, or sideways in a wall fixture?
Any orientation. Burning position is universal, so base-up recessed cans, horizontal wall grazers and uplit landscape or display heads are all fine with the S9498.
6) Is 4000K the right colour for a lobby, or should I be looking at 3000K?
4000K is neutral to cool white, the colour most commonly specified for offices, corridors, retail back-of-house, garages and healthcare spaces where you want a crisp, clean look. For a hotel lobby, restaurant, or residential unit where the finishes are warm wood and brass, 3000K or 2700K is the usual call, and this lamp is fixed at 4000K rather than colour-selectable. CRI is 80, which is standard for commercial general lighting but below what you would spec for merchandise or colour-critical retail display.
7) How long before I'm back up the ladder relamping these?
Rated at 25,000 hours. On a 12 hour a day commercial schedule that's roughly 5.7 years of service, against the 2,000 to 3,000 hours typical of the 50W halogen MR16 it replaces. That relamping interval is usually the whole argument for the swap in a high-ceiling lobby or a stairwell where access costs more than the lamp.
8) Does the Satco S9498 qualify for a utility rebate or a federal Buy American job?
No on both counts. The S9498 is not DLC listed, so it won't clear utility rebate programs that require a DLC qualified product, and it is not BAA compliant, which rules it out of federal work carrying Build America, Buy America requirements. It is FCC compliant.
9) Is this MR16 open-faced or does it have a lens over the diodes?
Lensed, with a clear lens and a gray housing. The clear lens keeps the beam defined rather than diffusing it, which is what you want on a 40 degree flood in an open trim where the lamp face is visible.
10) I need to standardize the MR16 lamps across a whole building. Is there more than one version of the S9498 to sort out?
One configuration only. S9498 is a single part number, 6.5W, 4000K, 40 degree beam, GU5.3, gray housing, so there's nothing to specify beyond the number itself when you're ordering for a fleet of fixtures. Anyone reordering to match existing heads only needs to confirm the sockets are GU5.3 two-pin on a 12 volt supply.
