Satco Lighting S9630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Satco S9630 LED R20 work in an enclosed fixture?
It's an enclosed rated lamp, so it can go in a closed or gasketed fixture without the heat trapping that shortens the life of non-rated LEDs. Location rating is damp, so covered exterior soffits, porch cans and bathroom cans are fine, but it's an indoor-rated lamp and shouldn't go anywhere it takes direct weather. Burning position is universal, so base up in a recessed can or base down in a pendant both work.
2) Can I sell or install the Satco S9630 in California?
No. The S9630 is non-compliant with California Title 20, so it can't be sold into California. Satco lists the S9614 as the Title 20 alternate substitute for it. If your job is in California, order that instead.
3) Is the Satco S9630 R20 dimmable, and will it work on my existing dimmer?
Dimmable, yes, on a 120V 60Hz line. The catch on any 6.5W LED is the dimmer itself: at 0.054 amps a single lamp draws a fraction of what an old incandescent-rated dimmer needs to run smoothly, so a bank of these on a legacy leading-edge dimmer can flicker or drop out at the low end. On an LED-rated dimmer it behaves. It's not a three-way lamp, so don't put it in a three-way socket expecting stepped output.
4) How wide is the beam on the Satco S9630 R20, and how far apart should the cans be?
107 degrees, which is a wide flood, not a spot. That spread washes a wall or gives general room fill from a 4 inch or 5 inch can rather than throwing a tight pool of light on a countertop or a piece of art. The lens is frosted, which softens the edge of the beam and cuts the hot center you'd get from a clear lens. If you need accent throw on a specific object, an R20 at 107 degrees is the wrong tool, look at a narrow-beam PAR lamp.
5) How long will the Satco S9630 last before it needs relamping?
Rated 25,000 hours. On a common apartment or corridor schedule of about 8 hours a day that's roughly 8.5 years between relamps, which is the number that matters when you're pricing the labor of getting a lift into a stairwell or hitting 200 units. Running 24/7 it's about 2.9 years.
6) Is the 2700K color on the Satco S9630 warm enough to match my existing incandescent cans?
2700K is the warm white that reads the same as a standard incandescent, so mixing this into a run of cans where you haven't relamped everything won't show a color break. CRI is 80, standard for general lighting and fine for corridors, lobbies, offices and residential units. Where color judgment matters (retail merchandise, paint or fabric selection, healthcare exam areas) you'd want a 90+ CRI lamp instead.
7) Does the Satco S9630 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
It isn't DLC listed, so it won't qualify under a utility program that requires a Design Lights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant. If your rebate paperwork hinges on a DLC entry, you need a DLC-listed lamp instead of this one.
8) Can I change the color temperature on the Satco S9630, or do I have to pick one?
Fixed at 2700K. There's no field selector switch on this lamp, so what you order is what you get. For a portfolio where different areas want different color, you'd have to stock separate SKUs by temperature rather than one selectable lamp.
