Satco Lighting S9950 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S9950 PLL LED lamp work with my existing fluorescent ballast, or do I have to rewire the fixture?
You have to rewire. The S9950 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the existing fluorescent ballast must be removed or disconnected and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. It will not operate on an existing PLL ballast. If you want a lamp that drops in and runs off the ballast you already have, you need a Type A plug-and-play PLL lamp instead.
2) Will the Satco S9950 fit a 2G11 four-pin PLL socket?
Yes, the lamp uses a 2G11 base in a T5 twin-tube PLL shape, so it seats in the standard four-pin 2G11 sockets used in PLL fixtures. Mechanical fit is only half the job on this one, though: the fixture has to be rewired for line voltage first because it is a ballast bypass lamp.
3) Can I run the Satco S9950 on 277V in a commercial building, or is it 120V only?
It runs anywhere from 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp covers 120V tenant spaces and 277V commercial lighting circuits. Current draw is 0.192A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.083A at the high end, which is what you use when you are counting lamps on a branch circuit.
4) Can this PLL LED lamp go in an enclosed fixture or a damp location like a covered walkway?
Both are fine. The S9950 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed gasketed wall pack or vandal fixture will not void it the way it does with many LED tubes, and it carries a damp location rating for covered exterior areas, parking garages and bathrooms. Damp is not wet, so keep it out of anything exposed to direct rain or hose-down.
5) What fluorescent PLL lamp does the 23W Satco S9950 LED replace in terms of light output?
At 23 watts it puts out 2800 lumens with an 82 CRI, and Satco rates it as a 100W incandescent equivalent. In practice that output range covers the common PLL twin-tube lamps used in wall packs, sconces and troffer-style fixtures. Colour is fixed at 3500K, so if the rest of your building is on 4000K or 3000K it will not blend.
6) Does it matter which way the lamp is oriented in the fixture?
No. Burning position is universal, so the S9950 can be installed base up, base down or horizontal without affecting performance. The frosted lens spreads light over a 270 degree beam angle, so it throws close to all the way around the tube rather than in one direction.
7) Is the Satco S9950 dimmable or three-way?
No on both counts. The lamp is not a three-way type, and the colour temperature is fixed at 3500K with no field-selectable CCT. Treat it as a straight on/off line voltage lamp when you lay out the circuit.
8) What is the Satco S9950 lamp body made of and what does it look like once installed?
The body is aluminum and plastic with a white housing and a frosted lens over the LED. The aluminum section acts as the heat sink, which is why the white housing side looks solid rather than translucent. In an open fixture the white body will be visible from below.
