Satco Lighting S9953 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I have to remove the ballast to install the Satco S9953 PLL LED lamp?
Yes. The S9953 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the lamp holders. It runs on 120 to 277 volts at 50/60 Hz, so it works on either a 120V or a 277V circuit without changing lamps. If you want a lamp that plugs into an existing ballast, this is the wrong type.
2) Will the Satco S9953 fit my existing 2G11 four-pin PLL sockets?
It uses a 2G11 base in a T5 tube shape, the same base as a 4-pin PLL fluorescent lamp, so it seats in existing 2G11 lamp holders. What changes is the wiring behind them: the ballast must be bypassed and line voltage brought to the sockets.
3) Can I put this Satco PLL LED on a dimmer?
No. The 15W S9953 is non-dimming and is not a three-way lamp. On a dimmer circuit expect flicker or no start. For dimmed areas, spec a lamp listed as dimmable instead.
4) Can the S9953 go in a fully enclosed fixture or a wall sconce?
It is an enclosed rated lamp, so a closed lens or sealed fixture is fine. Location rating is damp, and it is an indoor lamp, so covered corridors, stairwells, and bathrooms are in scope. Do not use it in a wet location or exposed outdoors.
5) What fluorescent PLL wattage does this 15W LED replace, and will the space look as bright?
The S9953 draws 15 watts and puts out 2000 lumens, with a 75W incandescent equivalence stated. Output spreads over a 270 degree beam angle through a frosted glass lens, so it fills a fixture the way a tube does rather than throwing a spot. At 4000K it reads neutral white, cooler than a 3000K lamp, which is the common choice for offices, corridors, and back-of-house.
6) Does the lamp have to be installed in a particular orientation?
No. Burning position is universal, so the S9953 can run base up, base down, or horizontal. That matters on retrofits where the original PLL sat vertically in a sconce or horizontally in a troffer.
7) If I am standardizing lamps across a building, will this Satco lamp match the color of the others?
Color is fixed at 4000K, not field selectable, with 80 CRI. Order the same model across the building and the color holds consistent from fixture to fixture. If other openings are already on 3500K or 5000K PLL lamps, mixing this one in will show a visible difference.
8) Will the Satco S9953 qualify for a utility rebate?
It is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify under programs that require a DLC listing. It is FCC compliant. Rated life is 50,000 hours, which is the number most facilities use for relamp scheduling in place of a rebate.
9) How much current does this lamp draw for circuit loading?
Current runs 0.125A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.054A at the high end, on 120 to 277 volts. Use the 120V figure when counting lamps on a branch circuit.
10) Is the S9953 glass or plastic?
The lamp body is glass with a frosted finish and a thermoplastic PBT cap at the base, in white. Glass lens rather than a polycarbonate tube, so handle it as you would a fluorescent lamp during install.
