Schlage 09-404 A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Schlage 09-404 rose fit my L Series mortise lever, or is it only for cylindrical locks?
It fits L levers, and only L levers. The outside rose with bushing is the trim part for Schlage's L Series mortise lock levers, so it will not seat on the cylindrical lever lines such as the ND Series, which use their own rose and bushing. If the case in the door is an L Series mortise lock with lever trim, this is the correct outside rose for it.
2) Which rose design do I order for a Schlage L Series lever, and how do I tell which one I have?
Match the one already on the door. The L Series outside rose comes in the A, B and C designs plus the AVA and MER roses, and they differ in shape and edge profile, so pull the damaged rose off and compare it before you order. Design and finish are ordered together as one combination, not separately.
3) Can I get a Schlage L Series lever rose in a finish that matches the satin chrome hardware on the rest of my doors?
Satin chrome 626 is one of the finishes offered, along with 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. These parts are finish specific, so order by the BHMA number stamped on the lock rather than by finish name. Bright and satin versions of the same metal, 625 against 626 or 629 against 630, are different parts and will not blend on a wall of doors.
4) Is every Schlage L Series rose design offered in every finish?
No, the design and the finish come as a set combination. Satin nickel 619 is offered in the AVA rose, for instance, while the standard A, B and C roses run through the common commercial finishes such as 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 629 bright stainless steel. Settle the rose design against what is on the door first, then take the finish code you need within that design.
5) The rose on my Schlage mortise lever is loose and chewed up. Can I replace just the rose instead of the whole lock?
That is exactly what this part covers. It is a factory replacement rose for the outside of an L Series lever trim, supplied with its bushing, so a worn or damaged rose gets swapped without pulling the mortise case out of the door and without touching the cylinder or the keying. The inside rose is a separate part, so if both faces are damaged you need to order for both sides.
6) What does the bushing on a Schlage L Series outside rose actually do?
The bushing is the sleeve at the door face that the lever hub turns inside. Because the outside rose carries it, fitting a new rose also renews the bearing surface the lever rides on, which is often what is behind a lever that has started to sag or feel sloppy at the outside face. A rose without its bushing only fixes the cosmetics.
7) Is the Schlage 09-404 an original Schlage part or an aftermarket copy?
Certified Schlage, not a generic equivalent. For a building standardized on L Series mortise locks that counts twice: the bushing and rose have to seat on the factory trim without shimming, and the finish has to be the genuine Schlage finish, because a near match on one door reads as a mismatch down a corridor of them.
8) Is the Schlage L Series lever rose a commercial part, or will it work on a residential door?
Commercial. L Series is Schlage's mortise lock platform for commercial openings, and this rose is trim for those levers. A house door almost always carries a cylindrical or tubular lock instead, which uses a different rose and bushing entirely, so this will not fit one.
