1) What exactly comes with the Schlage 09-401 outside lever kit?
The 09-401 is an outside lever for Schlage L Series mortise locks, supplied with the retaining clip and the insertion tool needed to seat and secure it on the spindle. It is a replacement trim part, not a complete lock, so it goes onto an existing L Series mortise lock case rather than replacing one.
2) My Schlage L9070 classroom lock has a broken outside lever. Can I just replace the lever instead of the whole mortise lock?
Yes. L Series mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet, with the letter F and UL symbol on the latch front marking the listing. Replacing the outside lever with the correct L Series trim keeps you within that listed assembly. The exceptions to the 3-hour listing in the series are the L9076 and L9077 functions.
5) Can I standardize one lever design across my Schlage mortise locks and Von Duprin exit devices?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. For a property manager or facility keeping one look across offices, stairwells and exit doors, that means the same lever design carries from mortise locks to exit device trim.
6) Will the Schlage 09-401 lever fit a Cal-Royal or other non-Schlage lock?
No. The 09-401 is L Series mortise lock trim, keyed to Schlage's own spindle and retaining clip arrangement. Something like the Cal-Royal CALDOR238 dormitory dead latch is a different manufacturer's lock and takes its own trim. Replace like for like, or replace the whole lock.
7) Is the Cal-Royal CALDOR238 CAL101 dormitory dead latch an alternative to the Schlage 09-401 outside lever?
No. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 CAL101 is a dormitory dead latch, a complete latching device with a dormitory function.
