Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX50P LAT 606 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ALX50 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
Key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatching bolt. Push the button on the inside lever and the outside lever locks; a key from the corridor side gets you in, and rotating the inside lever releases the button. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room walks out without unlocking anything. That is ANSI F82, the usual pick for a private office or a tenant suite where staff lock up behind themselves and don't want to carry a key to leave.
2) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering a Schlage ALX50 lever lock?
No handing to specify. The ALX50 is non-handed, so one part number works on a left hand or right hand door and there's no wrong-hand return to deal with. Useful for truck stock and for a property manager buying a dozen at once for doors that swing different ways.
3) Can I use my existing small format interchangeable cores in a Schlage ALX50?
Yes, and you choose the cylinder prep when you order. The cylinder options are B for SFIC less core, J for FSIC less core, L less conventional cylinder, and P for a factory 6-pin conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. If your facility is already on an SFIC system, order the B and drop your own cores in. The ALX chassis also accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats, and takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where you need high security.
4) Can I get several Schlage ALX50 office locks keyed alike on one key?
Keying is a required choice at order. Keyed different is standard; select keyed alike if a maintenance staff or a suite tenant needs one key to open several doors, and enter your key code if you are matching an existing system. If you picked a less-core or less-cylinder option, select None for keying and supply your own cores. Factory cylindered locks come with 2 keys.
5) Is the Schlage ALX50 rated for a fire door?
UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label fire doors up to 4 x 8 foot or 4 x 10 foot single doors and 8 x 8 foot pairs; 90 minutes on 8 x 10 foot pairs when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. It's tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, meets ADA requirements, and complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements. On the California Referenced Standards Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply.
6) Is a Grade 2 lock like the Schlage ALX50 enough for a commercial office, or should I be buying Grade 1?
Grade 2 with heavy duty rating covers most office, tenant suite and light commercial traffic. Where the opening is a high-cycle corridor or an institutional door, step to Grade 1: the Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office lever is the Grade 1 equivalent of this same F82-style entry/office function and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. If you want to stay in the Schlage family, ALX suites with the ND Series Grade 1 locks, which share the lever designs, so a building can run ALX on offices and ND on the heavy openings and still look and key the same.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX50 office lock and a storeroom or classroom lock?
It comes down to who controls the lock and from which side. The ALX50 is the entrance/office function, F82: the inside push button locks the outside lever and anyone inside can release it. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times and only a key retracts it, with no push button to leave it unlocked, which is what you want on a mechanical or IT room. A classroom function is keyed from the corridor to lock and unlock the outside lever, with no inside button at all. In the ALX family those are ALX80 storeroom (F86) and ALX70 classroom (F84) on the same chassis. Cross brand, Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever and Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage ALX50 entrance/office lever lock?
The Falcon B511CP6D is the nearest match on function and grade: it is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with an Entry/Office function, the same Entrance/Office function and Grade 2 rating the ALX50 carries. The Falcon is listed as medium duty, while the ALX50 is a heavy duty lock. Both are keyed cylindrical levers, so both take the same 161 bored prep.
9) What Grade 1 lever lock covers the same entrance/office function as the ALX50 for a higher-traffic opening?
The Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office lever is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with the same Entrance/Office function, and it fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The ALX50 is a Grade 2 lock in the same function, accommodating 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Dexter uses a clutching lever design; the ALX50 uses a field selectable Vandlgard feature that can be reversed to non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement.
10) I need a keyed lever for a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what should I use instead of the ALX50?
The ALX50 accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a thicker leaf, the Deltana 6201 Manchester and Deltana 6411 Morant entry levers both cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Hager 2525 Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock also covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Confirm the door thickness at the lock stile before ordering, since the bored prep is otherwise common across all of them.
11) The office door needs to stay locked at all times with key access only - what takes the place of an ALX50 there?
The ALX50 is an entrance/office function: key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch, and the inside push button locks the outside lever. That is the wrong behavior for a door that must never be left unlocked by a user. A storeroom function is the right call - the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever fitting 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
12) Will a Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever key into the same system as a Schlage ALX50?
The Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway supplied keyed different, fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ALX50 in the P cylinder configuration is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, so the two share the keyway family. Cal-Royal lists the AG00 at a 2-3/8 inch backset; the ALX50 ships standard on a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch with 2-3/8 inch latches also available. Have the keyway and bitting confirmed with the keying department before combining brands on one master system.
13) Can I use a Falcon B101 or Arrow GL01 in place of an ALX50?
No - both are non-keyed. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design and the Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 passage function lever with the Sierra lever, non-keyed, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Passage levers latch but never lock. The ALX50 is a keyed single-cylinder lock that ships with 2 keys. If the opening only needs to latch, either passage lever suits it; if it needs to secure, it does not.
14) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX Series and do I have to order it that way?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is secured, instead of taking the full force of someone yanking down on it, which is what saves the chassis in a school corridor or an apartment common area. On the ALX it's field selectable and field reversible, so the same lock goes either way after it's on the door. You don't order a separate part number for it.
15) I need a matching passage or privacy lever for the other doors in the same office suite. What goes with the Schlage ALX50?
Stay in the ALX family and the lever and rose match exactly across the suite: ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy trim, plus ALX53 entrance (F109) if a second keyed function is needed. Same Latitude lever design, same finish codes, so the restroom, the closet and the office all read as one set.
16) What finishes does the Schlage ALX50 Latitude lever come in, including anything for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM is the one to specify for patient rooms, clinics or any high touch corridor where infection control is part of the spec. Every one of the ten is available with any of the four cylinder preps.
17) Can I change the function of a Schlage ALX lock later without buying a whole new lockset?
Yes. The ALX chassis is modular: one chassis fits all functions and cores, and the patent pending design allows in-field function setup. A facility manager repurposing a room, or a locksmith carrying truck stock, can reconfigure rather than order a new complete lock. You can buy it factory configured, less levers, or as chassis, function and lever kits assembled on site.
18) What else could I buy instead of a Schlage ALX50 for an entry/office door?
Same function, different brands: Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office is the Grade 1 version for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial entry lever covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors if you have thicker leaves than the ALX chassis handles. The ALX50 sits at Grade 2 heavy duty with the modular chassis and the Schlage keyway options, which is what usually keeps a building on it.
19) Is the Schlage ALX50 an electronic or access control lock?
Purely mechanical. The ALX50 is a keyed cylindrical lever with no electronics, no wiring and no credential reader, so there's nothing to power at the door. If the opening needs a code rather than a key, a mechanical keypad leverset like the Lockey 1150 covers 1-1/8 to 2 inch doors, and electronic options include the Delaney LP250 keypad leverlock. For electrified access control on a cylindrical lever, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a fail safe 12VAC/DC lever for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
20) Is there a lower-grade entrance/office lever that uses the same door prep as the Schlage ALX50?
The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 lever lock with an Entrance/Office function and a solid brass forged body, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The ALX50 is Grade 2, certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, and covers the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door range. Both are cylindrical entrance/office levers, so the bored opening is the same; the difference is the ANSI grade and the ALX50's zinc and steel construction against the Cal-Royal's forged brass body.
21) Is a BEST 7KC dummy trim or Callan Bentley dummy an alternative to an ALX50?
They are not. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 non-keyed single dummy trim, medium duty, and the Callan Bentley BN5051 is a Grade 2 dummy lever. Dummy trim is a fixed pull with no latch and no chassis - it does not hold the door closed. The ALX50 is a keyed cylindrical lock with a deadlatch. Dummy trim is what goes on the inactive leaf of a pair; the ALX50 goes on the active leaf.
22) What handles a padded or detention-type room where the ALX50 lever would be a hazard?
An asylum function is the correct call there. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum function cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, heavy duty, and the Dexter C1000 asylum is a Grade 1 F87 asylum cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The ALX50 is an entrance/office lever whose inside lever is always free for immediate egress, which is the opposite of what an asylum opening controls for.
23) I want a knob instead of a lever with the same push-button entrance behavior as the ALX50 - what is there?
The Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, Grade 2, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors - the same door thickness range and pushbutton entrance behavior the ALX50 offers with a lever. Note that the ALX50 meets ADA requirements as a lever; a knob does not satisfy an ADA-governed opening, so reserve the knob for doors outside the accessible route.
24) I already run Yale hardware in the building - can Schlage keyed levers like the ALX50 join that key system?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which lets Yale bodies take a Schlage cylinder rather than the reverse. On the Schlage side, the ALX50 accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and is offered in B - SFIC less core and J - FSIC less core configurations so a house core can be dropped into it. That is the usual path to standardizing a mixed building on one core format.
25) What is the Schlage ALX50 lock body made of, and will the lever droop over time?
Zinc and steel construction with a stainless steel latchbolt. The spindle is deep drawn with 5 points of lever engagement to stop droop and wobble, which is the usual failure a property manager sees on a leverset after a few years of traffic, and it runs Grade 1 compression springs. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no loose small parts on the floor during a service call.
26) Is a Grade 1 passage lever like the Falcon K101 an upgrade path from the ALX50?
Not for the same opening. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors - a higher grade but a passage function, so it never locks. The ALX50 is Grade 2 and keyed. If the goal is a heavier lock in a locking function, stay in a keyed function and step up the grade; the Falcon K101 is the right part only where the door needs to latch and swing freely.
27) Does a mechanical keypad lever such as the Lockey 1150 do the job of an ALX50 office lock?
The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination in a passage function, fitting 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. It controls access by code, not by key, and no cylinder is involved. The ALX50 is keyed with a single cylinder outside and an inside push button, and ships with 2 keys. Choose the Lockey where the goal is code entry with no keys in circulation, and the ALX50 where the door must sit on an existing key system.
