Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX50P LON 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage ALX50 have to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing to call out. The ALX50 is non-handed, so one lock covers either swing and there is nothing to specify on the order. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress whichever way the door hangs.
2) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX50 entrance/office function and the ALX70 classroom or ALX80 storeroom?
The ALX50 is the ANSI F82 entrance/office function: key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch. Pushing the button locks the outside lever, and it unlocks with the key outside or just by rotating the inside lever. That fits an office or tenant suite the occupant secures behind them. If the door must stay locked at all times and open only by key from outside, the ALX80 storeroom (F86) is the one to order. For a door locked and unlocked from outside by key only, use the ALX70 classroom (F84). The ALX53 is the F109 entrance lock.
3) What does Vandlgard do on a Schlage ALX lock, and do I have to specify it when ordering?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely while the lock is locked rather than driving the force into the chassis, which is what keeps the lock alive when someone yanks on a locked corridor or restroom door. On the ALX50 it is field selectable and field reversible to non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement, so there is no suffix to pick and one lock covers either behaviour.
4) The Schlage ALX50 is offered less core. What cylinder do I need to order with it?
Four ways to buy it. Option P is a factory conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, ready to hang. Option B is SFIC less core and option J is FSIC less core, so the lock arrives prepped and you supply the small format or full size interchangeable core out of your own keying program. Option L is less conventional cylinder, for shops that pin and fit their own. Two keys are included.
5) Can a Schlage ALX50 be keyed into a master key system that isn't Schlage?
Usually yes. The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage cylinder formats plus five competitive cylinder formats, so a building already keyed on another manufacturer's system can take these locks without re-keying every other door. Where patented key control matters, the chassis takes Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed.
6) Is the Schlage ALX50 listed for use on a fire rated door?
UL and cUL listed. ALX locks carry a 3-hour A label fire door rating on single doors up to 4 by 8 feet or 4 by 10 feet, and on 8 by 8 foot pairs. Pairs at 8 by 10 feet are rated 90 minutes, and that rating depends on specifying the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option.
7) Does the Schlage ALX50 lever lock meet ADA requirements for a public building?
The ALX50 meets ADA requirements. It also complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements, and satisfies the California Referenced Standards Code on any lever with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less.
8) Is a Grade 2 lock like the Schlage ALX50 heavy enough for a busy entrance, or should I specify Grade 1?
The ALX50 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and is rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. That carries office, tenant and back of house traffic without trouble. Where the drawing calls out Grade 1 outright, the Dexter C1000 Series entry/office lever is a Grade 1 in the same function and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) I already have Schlage ND Series locks in the building. Will ALX50 levers match them?
The ALX Series suites with ND Series Grade 1 locks, so you can put ND on the openings that need Grade 1 and ALX50 on the rest while keeping lever and finish consistent across the building. Ten lever designs are offered; this one is the Longitude lever. Finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze, so healthcare and hospitality specs are covered too.
10) What other Grade 2 cylindrical lever locks run the same entrance/office function as the Schlage ALX50?
The ALX50 is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock built to the ANSI F82 entrance/office function - key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch - and it is rated heavy duty and non-handed. The closest cross-brand match on function and grade is the Falcon B511CP6D, a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with entry/office function rated medium duty. The Dexter C1000 Series entry/office cylindrical lever runs the same entrance/office function at Grade 1 with a clutching, keyed design for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. All three key from the outside and are cylindrical bored locks, so they share the same door prep family.
11) Are there matching passage and privacy levers in the Schlage ALX Series for the rest of the doors on the job?
The ALX Series covers the non-keyed openings with the same lever and finish: ALX10 is the F75 passage lock, ALX40 the F76 privacy, ALX44 a hospital privacy, and ALX170 and ALX172 are single and double dummy trim. Keyed siblings alongside the ALX50 are the ALX53 entrance, ALX70 classroom and ALX80 storeroom. One chassis fits all functions and cores, and the chassis design allows quick in-field function set up, so a room that changes use later does not need new hardware.
12) How is the Schlage ALX50 different from the older AL Series lock it replaces?
The ALX is the AL Series rebuilt around a modular design. It still ships as a complete factory configured lock, but it can also be bought less levers or as separate chassis, function and lever kits, which is how a locksmith carries truck stock that covers several functions and finishes. Practical differences over the AL: expanded cylinder support taking all Schlage plus five competitive formats, field selectable Vandlgard, a deep drawn spindle with five points of lever engagement to stop droop and wobble, and captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage so there are no loose small parts on the install. The lock body is zinc and steel.
13) I only need an office lock on a low traffic interior door. Is there a lighter option than the Schlage ALX50?
The Cal-Royal AUS00 is an entrance/office lever lock at Grade 3, listed for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Falcon B511CP6D is also entrance/office at Grade 2 with a medium duty rating. The Schlage ALX50 covers the same entrance/office function at Grade 2 with a heavy duty rating, a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. If the door sees light residential-style traffic the Grade 3 option carries the same function; if it is a commercial corridor or tenant suite door the ALX50 is the commercial-rated build.
14) Our doors are bored for a 2-3/8 inch backset. What keyed entrance lever fits that prep?
The Schlage ALX50 ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch - part 47267042, square corner, 1-1/8 inch by 2-1/4 inch face, non-restoring - and an ANSI strike, 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch with a 1-3/16 inch lip. For an opening already bored at 2-3/8 inch, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is listed at Grade 2 with a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. If the frame is being prepped new, the ALX50 backset and ANSI strike prep are the ones to give the door shop.
15) The building is keyed to Schlage C. Which locks can be brought into that same key system?
The Schlage ALX50 is offered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and the chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, with high security available through Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders. Among other lines, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever are both listed with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock is listed with a conventional cylinder in Schlage C keyway. Where the existing hardware is Yale, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware. That gives a locksmith several ways to keep one key system across mixed openings.
16) Which cylindrical levers look like the Schlage ALX50 but will not lock the door?
The ALX50 is a keyed single cylinder lock and comes with two keys. Several lever locks share the same cylindrical bored look with no cylinder in them at all: the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 passage lever with a non-handed design, the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 passage/closet lever, and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Further from it again are dummy trims - the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim at Grade 2 and the BEST 9K Series 1DT at Grade 1 - which are fixed trim with no latch and no chassis. If the opening needs to be secured, the passage and dummy items are not a substitute for a keyed lock.
17) Is there a keyed entrance lock with the same push button locking but knob trim instead of a lever?
The Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with ball knob trim and a conventional cylinder, listed at Grade 2 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS is also ball knob trim, in a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum function. The Schlage ALX50 is lever trim - the Longitude lever, non-handed - with the key cylinder outside and the push button inside, and levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, with the lock meeting ADA requirements. On projects where lever trim is called out on the drawings, the knob versions will not satisfy that note.
18) The doors on this job are 2 inches thick. What keyed lever should I be looking at?
The Schlage ALX50 accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness with minimal chassis adjustment. For a 2 inch door, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with lever handle listed for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Deltana 6201 Manchester lever entry is listed for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. On the non-keyed openings in the same run, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 passage/closet lever is Grade 1 vandal resistant and fire rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Measure the actual leaf before ordering - a 1-3/4 inch leaf keeps the ALX50 in play.
19) Office function lets anyone inside lock the outside lever with the button. What do I use where staff should not be able to do that?
The Schlage ALX50 is the ANSI F82 entrance/office function, where the inside push button locks the outside lever and a key outside or the inside lever unlocks it. Where the outside lever should stay locked at all times and only a key admits, storeroom function is the swap: the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom lock with Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Where the outside lever needs to be locked and unlocked by key only, from the corridor side, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is Grade 1 clutching and keyed for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Dexter C1000 classroom security version keys from both sides, and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is listed at a 2-3/4 inch backset in a 6-pin Schlage C keyway.
20) High turnover suites - is there a keyless lever instead of cutting keys for every tenant change?
The Schlage ALX50 is a keyed single cylinder lock supplied with two keys, in a conventional 6-pin C keyway or as a less core lock ready for an SFIC or FSIC core, which is what most managers use to rekey by swapping cores rather than pulling hardware. If the goal is no keys at all, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. Note the Lockey is passage function, so it is a code entry rather than a keyed office lock.
21) This opening is going on card access. What cylindrical lever handles that, and can the rest of the doors still match?
The Schlage ALX50 is a mechanical Grade 2 cylindrical lock in zinc and steel with a key cylinder outside and push button inside. For the door that has to release from an access control system, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC, with NZ lever and D rose, listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. To keep one look across the suite, the ALX Series suites with Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, which add 15 further functions plus 4 electrified options, and the ALX levers are made to pair with ND Series trim.
