1) Is the Schlage ALX50 handed, or do I have to order left and right hand separately?
No handing to specify. The ALX50 is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. For a property manager stocking spares that means a single part number on the shelf instead of two, and a locksmith can flip it on the truck.
2) How does the ALX50 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
Key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatching latchbolt. Staff press the inside button to lock the outside lever, and it stays locked until someone unlocks it with the key outside or rotates the inside lever. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can get out without touching the button. That is ANSI F82, the standard office function where the occupant controls whether the door is secured.
3) Which cylinder option do I order on the Schlage ALX50, and does it come with a core?
Four cylinder choices, and two of them ship without a core. P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, ready to key. L is less conventional cylinder, for when you are supplying your own. B is SFIC less core and J is FSIC less core, both for facilities running an interchangeable core system who will drop in their own cores. Standard cylinder on the lock is a conventional 6-pin. Order B or J and you must have cores on hand or the lock will not secure the door.
4) Can I key the Schlage ALX50 to my existing Schlage cylinders or another brand's keys?
The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage cylinder formats plus five competitive cylinder formats, so a building already keyed on a non-Schlage system can often stay on one key. Standard is a conventional 6-pin, and specifying Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders gives high security locking. Keying is chosen at order time as keyed different or keyed alike, and a key code can be supplied to match an existing system. Two keys come with the lock.
5) Is the Schlage ALX50 approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. The ALX Series suites with Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, and the levers are matched to them, so a corridor door on an ND and an office door on an ALX50 read as the same hardware. ND adds 15 further functions plus 4 electrified options where you need them.
