Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX50P BRW 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage ALX50 lock the outside lever while still letting people out from the inside?
That is exactly what the ALX50 Entrance/Office function does. A push button on the inside locks the outside lever; a key outside or a turn of the inside lever unlocks it again. The inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked regardless of how the outside is set. It is the ANSI F82 function, and the deadlatch keeps the latchbolt from being carded open when the door is closed.
2) Will the Schlage ALX50 drop into an existing 2-3/4 inch backset prep and ANSI strike?
If the frame is cut for an ANSI strike, yes. The ALX50 comes with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch, square corner face, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches, and an ANSI strike of 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard commercial 161 prep, so no new frame work is needed. Confirm your existing latch face is square corner and not radius before pulling the old lock.
3) Do I have to specify left or right hand when ordering the Schlage ALX50 Broadway lever?
No handing to call out. The ALX50 is non-handed, so one part number covers both swings and the lever works on either side. A building with a mix of left and right hand openings stocks one lock instead of two.
4) Can the Schlage ALX50 be keyed into a master key system we already run?
The ALX chassis takes every Schlage cylinder format plus five competitive formats, so it drops into most systems already in a building. Order P for a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, B for small format interchangeable core less core, J for full size interchangeable core less core, or L less conventional cylinder when you are supplying your own. Where high security keying is required, the chassis accepts Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed.
5) If I order the ALX50 with the SFIC or FSIC cylinder option, does a core come with it?
No core is included. The B option is small format interchangeable core less core, the J option is full size interchangeable core less core, and the L option ships less conventional cylinder, so you supply the core or cylinder from your own system. The P option is the one that arrives keyed, with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and two keys. Ordering less core is how a locksmith pins to the building's existing keyway on the truck.
6) What does Vandlgard do on the Schlage ALX lock, and can it be turned off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever spin free when the lock is locked rather than transmitting the force back into the chassis, which is what saves the lock on doors that get leaned on and yanked. On the ALX it is field selectable and field reversible between Vandlgard and standard locked lever engagement, so it is set on site and can be changed later without ordering a different lock.
7) Is the Schlage ALX50 approved for use on a fire rated door?
UL and cUL listed. The rating is 3-hour A label on single doors to 4 x 8 feet or 4 x 10 feet and on pairs to 8 x 8 feet, plus 90 minutes on 8 x 10 foot pairs when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. Testing is to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and it meets ADA requirements. It also complies with Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade hurricane requirements, which matters if you are specifying into a coastal jurisdiction.
8) We already run Schlage ND Series on the main doors. Will ALX50 locks on the offices match them?
Suiting the two is the point of the ALX Series. Its lever designs are made to suit the ND Series Grade 1 locks, so a Broadway lever on an office door reads the same as the ND hardware down the corridor, and both key into the same Schlage system. Ten lever designs and ten finishes run across the series. Keep ND where you need Grade 1 or one of its additional 15 functions, and use the ALX50 where Grade 2 entrance/office is enough.
9) Is there a Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage ALX50 with the same entrance/office function?
The Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office cylindrical lever lock is Grade 1 with the same entrance/office function, and its 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door range matches the ALX50's. The ALX50 itself is Grade 2 to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 but rated heavy duty. Step to Grade 1 where a spec calls for it or the opening sees constant traffic; the ALX50 covers offices, suites and interior entrances.
10) Are the Cal-Royal AUS00 and Falcon B511CP6D the same thing as the Schlage ALX50?
Same function, different duty class. All three are entrance/office cylindrical levers. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is Grade 3 and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Falcon B511CP6D is Grade 2 but rated medium duty. The ALX50 is Grade 2 rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt. On a leased office floor or a school corridor that gap shows up within a couple of years of service, so match the class to the traffic rather than the function label.
11) Staff keep pushing the button and leaving the door unlocked. Is there a lever that stays locked instead?
The push button on the ALX50 is deliberate, so anyone inside can leave the outside lever unlocked. If the outside lever must stay locked at all times with entry by key only, that is a storeroom function. Within the same Schlage family that is the ALX80, ANSI F86. From other brands, the Cal-Royal AG05 and the Hager 2580 are both Grade 2 storeroom levers, the AG05 for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors and the 2580 for 1-3/8 to 2 inches.
12) Can the Schlage ALX50 be electrified for a card reader or access control?
It cannot. The ALX50 is a mechanical entrance/office lock and the ALX line carries no electrified options. Schlage's ND Series suites with ALX and does offer four electrified options, so the usual approach is ND on the access controlled openings and ALX50 elsewhere, with levers and keying matching across both. For an electrified cylindrical lever from another brand, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
13) Can the function on a Schlage ALX lock be changed later without buying a whole new lock?
Yes. One chassis covers all ALX functions and cores, and the chassis design allows the function to be set in the field, so a room going from an office to a storeroom takes a function change rather than a replacement lock. The series is also sold as separate chassis, function and lever kits, which is how a locksmith carries truck stock in one box instead of a dozen pre-configured locks, and how a distributor configures uncommon lever and finish combinations same day.
14) Does the Schlage ALX50 come in an antimicrobial finish for a healthcare corridor?
626AM satin chrome antimicrobial is one of the ALX50 finish choices, which is the one to specify for patient rooms and clinic corridors. The rest of the range covers 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze, so existing hardware in most buildings can be matched without a split finish order.
15) What is the closest Grade 2 keyed entrance/office lever lock from another brand if the Schlage ALX50 Broadway is not the specified hardware?
The Falcon B511CP6D is the nearest match on grade and function: it is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with an Entrance/Office function, the same function the Schlage ALX50 Broadway performs under ANSI/BHMA F82. The two differ on duty level - the ALX50 is rated heavy duty and the Falcon B511CP6D medium duty. Prep also matters when you swap: the ALX50 ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch and an ANSI strike measuring 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, so confirm the replacement is ordered to the backset and strike already cut into the frame.
16) Our corridor and stairwell office doors see constant traffic - is there a Grade 1 lever lock with the same entrance/office function?
The Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with an Entrance/Office function, keyed, and it fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick - the same thickness window the Schlage ALX50 Broadway accommodates with minimal chassis adjustment. The abuse-resistance approach differs: the Dexter C1000 uses a clutching lever, while the ALX50 uses a field selectable Vandlgard feature that can be reversed in the field to non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement. The ALX50 itself is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and is rated heavy duty within that grade.
17) Is there a lighter-duty keyed entrance/office lever for low-traffic interior office doors?
The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 lever lock with an Entrance/Office function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Schlage ALX50 Broadway covers the same door thickness range but is a Grade 2 lock rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, and it accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats. If the opening is on a key system you intend to keep and expand, that cylinder flexibility is the practical difference between the two.
18) My doors are already bored for a 2-3/8 inch backset - what keyed entrance lever fits that prep?
The Schlage ALX50 Broadway is set up for a 2-3/4 inch backset: the deadlatch it ships with is a 2-3/4 inch backset, square corner, 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch, non-restoring latch. For a 2-3/8 inch prep, the Cal-Royal AG00 is a Grade 2 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. Because the AG00 uses the Schlage C keyway, it can sit on the same key system as the ALX50's conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder option.
19) Is a Grade 2 storeroom lever such as the Cal-Royal AG05 an equivalent replacement for the Schlage ALX50 Broadway?
They share the grade but not the function. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Schlage ALX50 Broadway is an F82 entrance/office lock: key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress. On an office, suite, or side entrance where the person inside needs to lock and unlock the outside lever themselves, the entrance/office function is what does that job, and a storeroom-function lock is a different operation on the same door prep.
20) We need a classroom function on some of these doors, not entrance/office - what lever lock covers that?
The Schlage ALX50 Broadway is the entrance/office function with a push button inside. Where the specification calls for a classroom function instead, the Dexter C1000 Series Classroom is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lock with a clutching lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and Dexter also builds the C1000 in a Classroom Security version, Grade 1, across the same thickness range. That thickness range matches what the ALX50 handles, so the door prep and door leaf you already have will suit either function.
21) Some of these openings never need to lock - what is the non-keyed lever equivalent?
The Schlage ALX50 Broadway is a keyed lock and comes with 2 keys. For an opening that only needs a latch and no locking, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, medium duty, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in the passage/closet function from the 5300 Series. Both stay at Grade 2, matching the ALX50, and the ALX50 is non-handed as well, so a mixed order of keyed and passage openings does not require you to hand the doors for the Schlage side.
22) I would rather not issue keys to a rotating crew - is there a keypad lever that covers the same doors?
The Schlage ALX50 Broadway is a keyed lock, offered with a conventional 6-pin Schlage C cylinder, SFIC less core, FSIC less core, or less conventional cylinder. For code entry instead of keys, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in a passage function, fitting doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick. Note the difference in credential type before you standardize a floor: the ALX50 puts those doors on your Schlage key system, while the keypad units are managed by code.
23) Can I use a single dummy lever trim on the inactive leaf instead of a second ALX50?
Dummy trim and a lock are different items. The BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is a non-keyed Grade 2 cylindrical lever trim, medium duty, and the BEST 9K Series 1DT is the non-keyed Grade 1 heavy duty version - fixed pull trim with no latching mechanism, which is what an inactive leaf usually wants. The Schlage ALX50 Broadway is a keyed entrance/office lock that ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch and an ANSI strike, so it belongs on the active leaf where the door has to latch and lock.
24) We key the whole property to Schlage C but a few doors carry Yale hardware - how do we keep one key?
The Schlage ALX50 Broadway accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats, and offers high security locking when used with Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders, so the Schlage side of the property is straightforward: order it with the conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, or as SFIC less core or FSIC less core and install your own cores. For the existing Yale openings you are not replacing, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which brings those doors onto the same cylinder format rather than a second key.
25) Same keyed entry function but with a knob instead of a lever - what is available?
The Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, Grade 2, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick from the RL Series. The Schlage ALX50 Broadway covers the same door thickness range and the same Grade 2 rating but is a lever - the Broadway design, one of ten lever designs in the ALX Series - and it meets ADA requirements, with all ALX levers having a return to door of 1/2 inch or less complying with the California Referenced Standards Code. Where your facility type or the drawing calls for lever operation, that is the deciding difference between the two.
