Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX50P OME 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) My doors are bored for a 2-3/8 inch backset. Can I use the Schlage ALX50 Omega lever?
Not with the latch it ships with. The ALX50 comes with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch, and since 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 are the two backsets you find on bored doors, a 2-3/8 prep will not line up. Where the prep is fixed at 2-3/8, the Cal-Royal AG00 is a Grade 2 entrance lever built on a 2-3/8 inch backset with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, so it keeps you on the same key system.
2) The existing doors are bored for a 2-3/4 inch backset. Which of the comparable levers drop into that prep?
The Schlage ALX50 ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch, square corner, 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch face, and an ANSI strike 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. Of the alternatives, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is listed at a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is listed at a 2-3/8 inch backset, so on a door already bored at 2-3/4 the AG00 puts the lever at a different distance from the edge and the latch face will not land in the existing mortise. Check the backset first and the strike prep second, since the ALX50 comes with an ANSI strike rather than a T-strike.
3) Should I use an entrance/office lock or a storeroom lock on a tenant suite door?
Entrance/office is the choice when the person inside controls the door. On the Schlage ALX50 that means key cylinder outside, push button inside, and a deadlatch: pressing the button locks the outside lever, and a key outside or a turn of the inside lever unlocks it again. The inside lever is always free for egress. Storeroom function is the opposite: the outside lever stays locked all the time and there is no button to leave it unlocked, so nobody can prop the door open by accident. The ALX80 is that function in the same series, and the Hager 2580 and Cal-Royal AG05 are Grade 2 storeroom levers from other brands.
4) What is the Vandlgard feature on the Schlage ALX Series, and do I have to specify it when ordering?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely while the lock is secured, so the force from somebody yanking a locked lever goes nowhere instead of into the chassis. That is what keeps corridor and stairwell locks alive. Nothing to specify: on the ALX50 it is field selectable and field reversible between Vandlgard and standard locked-lever engagement, so one lock covers both and you can change your mind after it is hung.
5) What cylinder options does the Schlage ALX50 come in, and can I fit my own interchangeable cores?
Four ways to order it: conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, less conventional cylinder, SFIC less core, and FSIC less core. The two interchangeable core versions arrive with no core so you pin them into an existing system. Beyond Schlage's own cylinders the chassis accepts five competitive cylinder formats, and it takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where the building needs high security, patented keying. The conventional cylinder version includes two keys; the less-cylinder and less-core versions are keyed by whoever runs your system.
6) Is the Schlage ALX50 handed, or does one lock work on left and right hand doors?
Non-handed. A single ALX50 goes on a left or right hand door, which means one part number covers every opening in the building and spares on the shelf are never the wrong hand.
7) Can the Schlage ALX50 be installed on a rated fire door?
UL and cUL listed for it. The listing covers 3-hour A label single doors at 4 by 8 feet or 4 by 10 feet and pairs at 8 by 8 feet, plus 90-minute on 8 by 10 foot pairs when the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option is used. The lock is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, meets ADA requirements, and complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements.
8) Is the Schlage ALX50 heavy duty enough for a high traffic office or apartment corridor?
Heavy duty at Grade 2, built in zinc and steel with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, which is where wear shows up first on a door that gets used all day. The spindle is deep drawn with five points of lever engagement, which is what stops the droop and wobble that turns into a service call a couple of years in.
9) I already have Schlage ND Series locks in the building. Will ALX50 levers match them?
The ALX Series is made to suite with ND Series Grade 1 locks, so lever designs carry across both and you can run ALX on the lighter openings and ND where Grade 1 is required without the doors looking mismatched. Omega is one of ten lever designs in the series. Finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze, so matching an existing spec across a floor is usually straightforward.
10) This opening is going on access control. Is the Schlage ALX50 the right lock, or do I need an electrified lever?
The Schlage ALX50 is a mechanical lock, with a key cylinder outside, a push button inside and a deadlatch, and no provision for a card reader or a release signal. For an opening tied into access control, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever lock in fail safe configuration at 12VAC/DC, for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick. Confirm the fail safe or fail secure requirement with the authority having jurisdiction before ordering, since that decision is written into the lock and is not a field change.
11) Can I change an ALX50 to a different lock function later without buying a new lock?
That is what the modular chassis is for. One ALX chassis covers every function and every core type, and the function is set up in the field, so a room that changes use can move off entrance/office without new hardware going on the door. It is sold three ways as well: factory configured and ready to install, less levers, or as separate chassis, function and lever kits assembled on site, which is how a locksmith carries truck stock that covers a lot of calls in uncommon levers and finishes.
12) What else could I buy instead of the Schlage ALX50 for an entrance/office lever lock?
Same function, different brands: the Dexter C1000 entry/office is Grade 1 with a clutching lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, so it steps up a grade where traffic or abuse is heavier. Falcon's B511CP6D is Grade 2 entry/office at medium duty. Cal-Royal's AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, aimed at lighter openings. The ALX50 is Grade 2 heavy duty and the reason to stay with it is the Schlage key system behind it, particularly if the building is already keyed to a Schlage C keyway or an interchangeable core system.
13) Is there another Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with the same entrance/office function as the Schlage ALX50?
The Falcon B511CP6D is the closest straight equivalent. It is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with Entrance/Office function, which is the same function the Schlage ALX50 carries as ANSI/BHMA F82. The Falcon B511CP6D is listed at medium duty; the ALX50 is listed at heavy duty. Both are lever trim on a cylindrical chassis, so the door prep is the same class of bore either way. The ALX50 is non-handed and ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch, so confirm the Falcon backset against the existing bore before swapping one for the other.
14) The drawing calls for a Grade 1 entry/office lever. What do I order instead of the Schlage ALX50?
The Dexter C1000 Series entry/office lever is the Grade 1 counterpart with the same Entrance/Office function. It is a keyed cylindrical lever lock with a clutching design and fits doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. The Schlage ALX50 is a Grade 2 lock, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, and carries the same Entrance/Office function as ANSI F82. If the submittal is written to Grade 1, the Dexter C1000 entry/office is the one that answers it; if the spec allows Grade 2, the ALX50 covers the same opening.
15) These are low-traffic interior office doors. Is there a lighter-rated entrance/office lever than the Schlage ALX50?
The Cal-Royal AUS00 is an Entrance/Office lever lock at Grade 3, fitting doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. The Schlage ALX50 covers the same Entrance/Office function at Grade 2 and is listed as heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. Both are keyed levers for the same style of opening; the difference to weigh is the cycle and strength grade you want standing behind the door.
16) Our building is keyed on a Schlage C system. Which alternative levers can go on the same key system as the Schlage ALX50?
The Schlage ALX50 can be taken with the P conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, or as B SFIC less core or J FSIC less core if you are pinning your own cores into an existing system. Among the alternatives, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is supplied with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder keyed different, and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is supplied the same way, so both can be pinned into a C system. If part of the building is Yale hardware, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how those openings come onto the same key.
17) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX50 and the passage levers that look almost identical?
The Schlage ALX50 is keyed. It is a single cylinder lock with a key cylinder outside, a push button inside, and a deadlatch, and it comes with two keys. The Falcon B101, the Accentra 5301LN Augusta, the Arrow GL01 with the Sierra lever, and the Design Hardware J75 are all Grade 2 cylindrical levers as well, but all four are passage function and non-keyed, so the lever simply retracts the latch from either side with nothing to lock. If the door needs to be secured at any point, a passage lever is not a substitute for the ALX50; if it only needs to latch closed, the passage levers are the ones built for that.
18) I do not want staff able to leave the door unlocked with the inside button. What lever should I use instead of the Schlage ALX50?
Move to a storeroom function lock. The Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 to 2 inches thick, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. The Schlage ALX50 is Entrance/Office function, ANSI F82, with a key cylinder outside and a push button inside that locks the outside lever, which is exactly the control you are trying to take away from the occupant. For a supply room, an electrical closet, or any door that should stay secured regardless of who used it last, the storeroom function is the right call.
19) The district specifies classroom function on these doors. Is the Schlage ALX50 acceptable, or do I need a different lock?
The Schlage ALX50 is Entrance/Office function, ANSI F82, so it does not satisfy a classroom specification. For classroom function, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is Grade 1, clutching and keyed, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, and the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and a 2-3/4 inch backset. Where the district is writing classroom security instead, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lever is the Grade 1 option for that function.
20) Can I get this same office function with a knob instead of a lever?
Yes. The Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. The Schlage ALX50 is lever trim in the Omega design, non-handed, and meets ADA requirements, with all levers having a return to door of 1/2 inch or less complying with the California Referenced Standards Code. Where the opening is on an accessible route or the specification calls for lever operation, stay with the lever; a knob is generally reserved for openings not governed by that requirement.
21) We are tired of issuing and collecting keys for the office door. What keyless lever replaces the Schlage ALX50?
Two directions. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, which keeps a code-based credential on the door instead of a key. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination, passage function, for doors 1-1/8 to 2 inches thick, with no electronics or batteries involved. The Schlage ALX50 is a keyed single cylinder lock with a key cylinder outside and a push button inside, supplied with two keys, so the trade you are making is code management against key management.
