Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX50P BRK 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset and strike does the Schlage ALX50 use, and will it drop into an existing door prep?
The ALX50 ships on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The standard latch is a square corner deadlatch with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch face, non-restoring function, and the standard strike is an ANSI strike, no box, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If the frame already carries an ANSI strike cutout and the door is bored at 2-3/4, it goes straight in. If the existing prep is 2-3/8 inch backset, this is the wrong lock for that door: the Cal Royal AG00 entrance lever is a Grade 2 option built on a 2-3/8 inch backset with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway.
2) How does the entrance/office function work on a Schlage ALX50 lock?
This is the ANSI F82 entrance/office function. Key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch. Push the button on the inside and the outside lever locks; unlock it with the key from outside, or just rotate the inside lever. The inside lever is always free, so someone can walk out whether the lock is set or not. That is the function you want on an office, a suite door, or a side entrance that staff lock behind them without carrying a key.
3) What cylinder options do I have to choose when ordering a Schlage ALX50, and does it come with keys?
Four cylinder choices are on the order form. P is a factory conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway and comes with two keys. B is small format interchangeable core, less core. J is full size interchangeable core, less core. L is less conventional cylinder. The three less-core and less-cylinder options exist so a locksmith or facility can drop in their own core and keep the opening on the house key system rather than rekeying a factory cylinder.
4) Can a Schlage ALX50 be keyed into a master key system that is not Schlage?
One chassis takes all cores, and the ALX Series accepts every Schlage cylinder plus five competitive cylinder formats, so a building running someone else's keyway is not automatically out. Order it less cylinder or less core and install the format your system already uses. If the opening needs high security, the lock takes Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed.
5) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX series and do I have to decide on it when I order?
Vandlgard changes how the outside lever engages the chassis when the lock is in a locked state, and on the ALX50 it is field selectable. You are not committing at the order stage: the lock is field reversible between Vandlgard and non-Vandlgard engagement, so the same hardware can be set either way and changed later. On abuse-prone openings, a dorm, a public corridor, a tenant entry that gets pulled on, that is the setting worth having.
6) I need a storeroom or classroom lock, not an office function. What else is in the Schlage ALX series?
The ALX50 is the entrance/office function, and it is the wrong pick if the door must stay locked at all times or be controlled by key only. The keyed alternatives are ALX53 entrance, ANSI F109; ALX70 classroom, ANSI F84; and ALX80 storeroom, ANSI F86. Non-keyed, the family runs ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy. Because the chassis design allows quick in-field function setup, a facility repurposing a room can change function without buying new hardware.
7) Can I use Schlage ALX locks alongside ND Series locks and keep the levers matching across a facility?
Yes, and that is the usual way it gets specified. The ALX Series suites with the Grade 1 ND Series, which adds 15 further functions plus four electrified options, and the ten ALX lever designs are matched to ND. So the high-traffic and electrified openings get ND, the standard offices get ALX50, and the levers read as one program down the corridor.
8) Does the Schlage ALX50 meet ADA and Grade 2 requirements for a commercial building?
It is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and meets ADA requirements. It is a commercial lock, listed heavy duty. For California work, the California Referenced Standards Code is met by any lever with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less, so the lever design you pick decides that one, not the chassis.
9) What finishes does the Schlage ALX50 Boardwalk lever come in, and is there one suited to a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. For a clinic, a care home or a school washroom corridor, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of the standard 626 satin chrome, so touch surfaces get the treatment without breaking the finish match with the rest of the building. Split finishes and split styles are ordered through our Sales Center and carry extended manufacturer lead times.
10) Is a Grade 2 entrance/office lever enough for a high-traffic entry, or should I step up to Grade 1?
The ALX50 is Grade 2 but built above the class: stainless steel latchbolt, Grade 1 compression springs, zinc and steel construction, and a deep drawn spindle with five points of lever engagement to stop lever droop and wobble. It is listed heavy duty, where the comparable Falcon B511CP6D entry/office lever is a Grade 2 medium duty lock. If the specification calls for Grade 1 outright, the Dexter C1000 Series entry/office cylindrical lever is the Grade 1 equivalent and covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
11) I need the door tied into an access control system. Can I get an electrified version of the Schlage ALX50?
Electrification is not part of the ALX50, which is a mechanical cylindrical lock, key outside and push button inside. Two routes cover that opening. Within Schlage, the ND Series Grade 1 line the ALX suites with carries four electrified options and matching lever designs, so the electrified door still looks like the rest. From another brand, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever in 12V AC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
12) What is the closest match to the Schlage ALX50 from another manufacturer in the same function and grade?
The Falcon B511CP6D is the nearest same-function, same-grade lever lock. The ALX50 is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock carrying the ANSI F82 entrance/office function, with a key cylinder outside, a push button inside and a deadlatch, on a Boardwalk lever. The Falcon B511CP6D is likewise a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with entry/office function. The two are separated by duty level: the ALX50 is rated Heavy Duty and the B511CP6D is rated Medium Duty. If the opening needs to stay on the Schlage keying program, the ALX50 also accepts a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as a factory option.
13) The spec on the drawing calls for a Grade 1 entry/office cylindrical lever. What takes the place of a Schlage ALX50 there?
The Dexter C1000 Series entry/office lever is the Grade 1 counterpart. It is a keyed cylindrical lever lock with clutching levers, carries Grade 1, and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Schlage ALX50 covers the same entrance/office function and the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, but is certified to Grade 2 under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000. Where the submittal names Grade 1 specifically, the Dexter C1000 entry/office meets that line; where the submittal names the function rather than the grade, the ALX50 answers it.
14) Is there a lighter-grade entrance/office lever than the Schlage ALX50 for a low-traffic interior office door?
The Cal-Royal AUS00 is an entrance/office lever lock certified to Grade 3, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. It carries the same entrance/office function as the Schlage ALX50, so the door behaves the same way for the occupant: key outside, and the inside lever always free. The ALX50 is a Grade 2 lock rated Heavy Duty and covers the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness. For a tenant office off a corridor the AUS00 matches the function; for a door on a keyed program with mixed traffic the ALX50 is the Grade 2 answer.
15) Our building is keyed to Schlage C. Which other cylindrical locks can run on the same keyway as the ALX50?
The Schlage ALX50 can be ordered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and it is also offered less conventional cylinder, less SFIC core and less FSIC core so a locksmith can core it to an existing system. Among other makes, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is a Grade 2 lock supplied with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is likewise a 6-pin Schlage C keyway lock keyed different. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in Schlage C keyway as well. Note the backsets differ: the ALX50 ships 2-3/4 inch, the AG03 is 2-3/4 inch, and the AG00 is 2-3/8 inch, so confirm the bore of the existing door before ordering.
16) We do not want staff able to leave a door unlocked with a push button. What should we use instead of a Schlage ALX50?
Use a storeroom function lock. The Schlage ALX50 is an entrance/office lock: the inside push button locks the outside lever, and it is unlocked with the key outside or by rotating the inside lever, which means an occupant can leave the outside lever free. A storeroom lock keeps the outside lever locked at all times and passes only a key. The Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick.
17) The opening needs a classroom function rather than office. What replaces the Schlage ALX50 on that door?
A classroom lock is keyed from the outside to lock and unlock the outside lever, with no inside push button. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lock with clutching levers, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Dexter C1000 classroom security version is the Grade 1 variant keyed from both sides. The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is a Grade 2 lock with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Schlage ALX50 is the ANSI F82 entrance/office function with a key cylinder outside and a push button inside, and it ships on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
18) Which cylindrical levers look like a Schlage ALX50 but will not lock the door?
Passage levers share the same trim silhouette and the same chassis prep but have no cylinder and no locking mechanism at all - the lever simply retracts the latch from both sides. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, the Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lock with the Sierra lever and is explicitly non-keyed, the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever with passage/closet function, and the Design Hardware J75 is a Grade 2 passage lever lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage ALX50 is keyed, supplied with 2 keys, and carries a key cylinder outside with a push button inside.
19) Can lever trim for an exit device be used in place of a Schlage ALX50?
No - those are two different pieces of hardware. The Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is a heavy duty escutcheon lever trim with entry function, and the Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device. Both mount to an exit device and depend on that device for latching; neither is a standalone lock. The Schlage ALX50 is a cylindrical lock in its own right, with its own chassis, a dead latch on a 2-3/4 inch backset and an ANSI strike, bored into the door.
20) We need the inactive leaf of a pair to match the Schlage ALX50 lever on the active leaf. What do we order?
The inactive leaf takes dummy trim, not a lock - it has no latch and no cylinder, and only provides a pull that matches the active side. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 single dummy trim cylindrical lever, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is the Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim, the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever, and the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever. The Schlage ALX50 on the active leaf is the keyed entrance/office lock, carrying a stainless steel latchbolt and a captured screw latch, strike and inside spring cage.
21) We are tired of issuing keys for an office door. What keyless lever takes the place of a Schlage ALX50?
Two keypad routes exist. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, which puts code entry at the door in place of a cylinder. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination and no electronics, fitting doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick, but it is a passage function set, so the outside lever is not secured by a cylinder the way a keyed lock is. The Schlage ALX50 is the mechanical keyed answer: key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch, supplied with 2 keys and available for conventional, SFIC or FSIC cores.
22) We are replacing an old keyed knob with a turn button. Does the Schlage ALX50 do the same job?
Yes, in function. The Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Schlage ALX50 delivers the same idea on lever trim: key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress. The ALX50 meets ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, which is the deciding factor on many public-facing openings where a knob is being swapped out.
