Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX53P BRK 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to worry about handing when ordering a Schlage ALX53 entrance lever?
No. The ALX53 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand doors. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress regardless of how the door swings, which also means you do not need to specify hand for a mixed set of openings.
2) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX53 and the ALX50 entrance function?
Both are keyed entrance locks, but they behave differently at the inside button. The ALX53 is ANSI F109: key cylinder outside, push or push-and-turn button inside, deadlatch. Push the button and the outside lever locks until you key it or turn the inside lever. Push and turn the button and the outside key retracts the latch only, so the lock stays locked until someone returns the button to home. The ALX50 is the ANSI F82 Entrance/Office function. If you want the button to release automatically when someone exits, F82 is the one you want; if you want a locked state that stays locked after a key entry, the ALX53 is right.
3) I need every entrance door in the building on one key. Can Schlage ALX53 locks be keyed alike?
Yes. Keying is specified at order as KD keyed different (the standard) or KA keyed alike for multiple locks, and you can pass an existing key code so new locks join a system already in the building. Two keys come with the lock. If you are running a large facility on interchangeable cores, order the less-core versions instead and pin your own.
4) Is a Grade 2 lock like the Schlage ALX53 enough for a commercial building, or should I be buying Grade 1?
The ALX53 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. It is built for commercial use. Where you need Grade 1 on high traffic openings, Schlage ND Series suites with the ALX Series and adds 15 more functions plus four electrified options, so you can run ND on the heavy doors and ALX everywhere else with matching levers. Grade 1 alternatives we carry include the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series and the Falcon K Series.
5) Can the Schlage ALX53 go on a fire rated door?
Yes. ALX Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label fire doors on 4 x 8 foot or 4 x 10 foot single doors and 8 x 8 foot pairs, and 90-minute on 8 x 10 foot pairs when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. The lock also meets ADA requirements and complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements.
6) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage ALX53 Boardwalk entrance lever from another manufacturer?
The Schlage ALX53 is a Grade 2 cylindrical keyed lever with an entrance function, and the Hager 2525 is the nearest peer in that same slot: a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle, rated for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is another Grade 2 option and comes with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, which matters if the existing bores in the openings are drilled for the shorter backset. All three are keyed lever entrance locks, so the decision usually comes down to keyway and backset rather than function.
7) The opening is a stairwell or supply room that has to stay locked at all times - is an entrance lever the right lock?
No. The Schlage ALX53 uses a key cylinder outside with a push button inside and a deadlatch, so the outside lever can be left unlocked by the inside button, which is not what a always-locked opening wants. For storeroom service, the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom leverset with a deadlocking latchbolt. Both keep the outside lever locked and are keyed lever locks in the same cylindrical family.
8) The door is a classroom that has to be lockable from outside by key while the inside lever always stays free - which lock covers that?
That is a classroom function, not an entrance function. The Schlage ALX53 is an entrance lock with a push button inside. For a classroom opening, the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which matches the ALX53's 2-3/4 inch backset so the existing latch prep carries over. The Dexter C1000 classroom lock is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Dexter C1000 classroom security version adds keyed control from both sides.
9) Is a Falcon B511 the same thing as a Schlage ALX53?
They are close but not identical in function. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with an entry/office function, while the Schlage ALX53 is a Grade 2 heavy duty entrance lock carrying ANSI/BHMA F109. Schlage's own entry/office equivalent in the same family is the ALX50, ANSI F82. So the Falcon B511 lines up with the ALX50 designation rather than the ALX53, and the duty level differs as well. The Dexter C1000 entry/office lever is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lock in that same entry/office role for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch.
10) What looks like a substitute for a Schlage ALX53 but will not lock the door?
Several lever sets carry a similar lever look but have no cylinder at all. The Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever with a passage/closet function, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 non-handed cylindrical passage lever, and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Arrow GL01 with the Sierra lever is a Grade 2 passage lock and is explicitly non-keyed. None of these accept a key, so they cannot replace the ALX53, which is a keyed single cylinder lock supplied with two keys.
11) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX53 and do I need it?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is secured instead of taking the force, so a kick or a hard pull on a locked lever does not transfer into the chassis. On the ALX53 it is field selectable and field reversible to non-Vandlgard engagement, so you decide at install rather than at order. Worth turning on for tenant entries, school corridors, and anywhere the public reaches the lever; leave it off where staff expect the lever to feel solid when locked.
12) Do I have to reorder a whole new lock to change an ALX53 from entrance to storeroom or classroom?
No. The ALX Series uses a modular chassis, and the patent pending design allows quick in-field function setup, with one chassis fitting all functions and cores. You can buy factory configured, less levers, or as chassis, function and lever kits and build what you need on site. For a facility repurposing rooms, that means changing function without buying new hardware. Related keyed functions in the family are ALX50 (F82 entrance/office), ALX70 (F84 classroom) and ALX80 (F86 storeroom).
13) What finishes does the Schlage ALX53 Boardwalk lever come in, and is there anything for a healthcare setting?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM antimicrobial option is the one specified in hospitals, clinics and food service where touch surfaces matter. Every finish is offered against each of the four cylinder prep options.
14) I need a keyed entrance lever and I am comparing brands. What else is there besides the Schlage ALX53?
Among Grade 2 commercial entrance levers, the Hager 2525 is a cylindrical entry lock covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon B511CP6D is a medium duty Grade 2 entry/office lever. Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Stepping up, the Dexter C1000 entry/office is Grade 1 with clutching for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ALX53's difference is the modular chassis and the ability to take SFIC, FSIC or conventional Schlage cylinders on the same lock.
15) Our building is standardized on Yale hardware but keyed to Schlage - does that affect choosing an ALX53?
It can. The Schlage ALX53 accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats, and can be ordered less core for SFIC or FSIC, or with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Going the other direction, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how an existing Yale lock is brought onto a Schlage key system. Deciding between the two paths comes down to whether the doors are getting new locks or keeping the ones already hung.
16) I need a keyed lever that takes a Schlage C key but the budget is tighter than a commercial Grade 2 lock - what else works?
The Cal-Royal AUS00 is an entrance/office Grade 3 lever with a solid brass forged body covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. Both sit a grade below the Schlage ALX53, which is tested to Grade 2. If keying to an existing Schlage C system is the reason for the search, the Cal-Royal AG00 stays at Grade 2 and ships with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, so the keys still cut on the same system as the ALX53's conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder.
17) The opening is heavier traffic than a Grade 2 lock should see - what steps up from the ALX53?
The Schlage ALX53 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2. For a heavier opening, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty fire rated cylindrical lock covering 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Both of those are passage function, so they suit the openings on the job that do not need a key. Where the same corridor needs a keyed Grade 1 lever, the Dexter C1000 entry/office is Grade 1 and keyed. Within Schlage, the ND Series Grade 1 locks are designed to suite with ALX levers, so the trim can stay consistent across a mixed-grade job.
18) We want to drop the keys entirely on a back office door - what replaces a keyed entrance lever?
Two keypad lever sets cover that opening. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, matching the ALX53's Grade 2 rating without a key cylinder. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination, needs no power, and fits doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage ALX53 itself is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so moving to either of these is a change in how the door is controlled, not just a trim swap.
19) The access control drawing calls for the lever to release on a signal - can an ALX53 do that?
No. The Schlage ALX53 is a mechanical lock with no electronic option. For an electrified cylindrical lever, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe lever running 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Fail safe means the lever unlocks when power drops, which is the behavior specified on egress-critical openings; the ALX53 instead keeps the inside lever always free for immediate egress mechanically.
20) Our existing hardware is knob rather than lever - is there a knob version of a keyed entrance lock?
The Schlage ALX53 is a lever, with the Boardwalk lever design. If the openings are staying on knobs, the Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, Grade 2, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, which is the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch range the ALX53 chassis accommodates. Note that a lever is what satisfies ADA operable-hardware requirements; the ALX53 meets ADA requirements, and switching to a knob changes that.
21) Can I use a Baldwin or Deltana entry lever in place of a Schlage ALX53 on a commercial opening?
They are keyed entry levers but a different class of product. The Deltana 6201 Manchester, 6411 Morant and 6431 Linstead are entry-function levers covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 comes in passage, privacy and handed half-dummy versions on the 5048 rose. The Baldwin half dummies are handed left or right, where the Schlage ALX53 is non-handed and rated for commercial use with a heavy duty designation. On a commercial job with an ANSI F109 requirement on the drawing, the ALX53 carries that designation.
22) The bathroom and bedroom doors on the same job need to lock from inside without a key - what goes on those?
Those take a privacy function rather than the keyed entrance function of the Schlage ALX53. Within the ALX family that is the ALX40, ANSI F76 privacy, or the ALX44 hospital privacy. Across brands, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Arrow MK02-TA is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, and the Kwikset 300BRNL RDT Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Privacy locks have no outside key cylinder.
23) What is the Schlage ALX53 made of, and will it hold up on a high traffic tenant entry?
Zinc and steel construction, rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. The deep-drawn spindle has five points of lever engagement to prevent the droop and wobble that usually kills a lever lock on a busy door, and captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no small loose parts to lose during service.
24) We are running lever trim down a corridor and need matching dummy levers on the closet doors - what pairs with a keyed entrance lever?
Dummy trim carries the lever look with no latch. In the Schlage ALX family the matching parts are the ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy. If the job is being sourced across brands, the BEST 7KC single dummy trim is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever dummy, the BEST 9K 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever. Dummy trim is fixed and does not operate a latch, so it belongs only on doors held by a catch or a magnet.
