Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX53L TLR 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the ALX53 entrance function actually do when someone pushes the button inside?
The ALX53 is the ANSI F109 entrance function: key cylinder outside, push/turn button inside, deadlatch. Push the button and the outside lever locks; a key outside or simply turning the inside lever unlocks it. Push AND turn the button and it stays locked, the outside key only retracts the latch for that one entry, and it stays locked until someone returns the button to home. The inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked. That second mode is what most people want on a shop or office door they lock behind them.
2) Do I have to order a left or right hand ALX53?
No handing to specify. The ALX53 is non-handed, so the same lock goes on either swing. That is the practical difference from ordering a mortise lock or a decorative half dummy, where you commit to a hand at the order form.
3) Does the ALX53 come with a cylinder and keys, or do I have to buy the core separately?
Depends which cylinder option you pick. The P option ships as a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with 2 keys. The B (SFIC) and J (FSIC) options come less core, so you supply the interchangeable core from your own system. The L option is less conventional cylinder for shops that pin their own. If you are keying into an existing facility system, B or J is what you want; if this is a standalone door, take P.
4) Can I get several Schlage ALX53 locks keyed alike so one key opens them all?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: keyed different is the standard, keyed alike is offered for running multiple locks on one key, and there is a key code field if you need them cut to an existing bitting. If you selected one of the less-core or less-cylinder options, you pick None on keying and pin your own cores.
5) Can I use my existing Corbin, Yale or Best cores in a Schlage ALX53?
The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats, and the small format and full size interchangeable core options both ship less core so you drop in the core from your own keying system. For high security openings, the chassis also takes Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed.
6) Is the Schlage ALX53 approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. The ALX is UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label fire doors up to 4 x 8 or 4 x 10 feet single, and 8 x 8 foot pairs; 8 x 10 foot pairs are covered at 90 minutes when ordered with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. It is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 2 and meets ADA requirements, plus Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade hurricane requirements.
7) The opening needs a Grade 1 keyed lever instead of a Grade 2 - what replaces the ALX53?
The Dexter C1000 Series entry/office lever is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever with a clutching mechanism, covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors - the same thickness range the Schlage ALX53 chassis handles, at Grade 1 instead of the ALX53 Grade 2. For a heavier keyed opening, Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever built for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, though it is an electrified fail safe lever rather than a mechanical one.
8) Door is 2 inches thick - the ALX53 will not fit, what keyed lever will?
The Schlage ALX53 chassis is built for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, so a full 2 inch door needs a different lock. The Hager 2525 Grade 2 cylindrical entry lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Deltana 6201 Manchester, 6411 Morant and 6431 Linstead entry levers all list 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Dexter C1000 asylum function lever is Grade 1 over 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch.
9) Is the Falcon B511CP6D the same lock as the Schlage ALX53?
They are both Grade 2 cylindrical levers with a keyed outside, but the function differs. The Falcon B511CP6D is entry/office function, while the Schlage ALX53 is ANSI F109 entrance function with a key cylinder outside, push button inside and a deadlatch. The ALX53 is heavy duty; the Falcon B511CP6D is medium duty. If the hardware schedule calls out F109 specifically, the entry/office lock is not a drop-in for it.
10) The room needs a storeroom function rather than an entrance function - what lever do I order instead?
The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both stay at the same Grade 2 level as the Schlage ALX53, which is an ANSI F109 entrance function with an inside push button.
11) Is a Grade 2 lever like the ALX53 heavy duty enough for a commercial entrance, or should I step up to Grade 1?
For a commercial entrance or office door, the ALX53 is rated heavy duty and built past the Grade 2 minimum: stainless steel latchbolt, Grade 1 compression springs, and a deep drawn spindle with five points of lever engagement to stop droop and wobble. Where the traffic genuinely warrants Grade 1, Schlage ND Series is the step up and the ALX suites with it, so the levers and finishes match across a building. Other Grade 1 cylindrical options include the Falcon K Series and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series.
12) What is Vandlgard on the ALX53 and can I turn it off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is secured, so the latch stays retracted-proof and abuse on the lever does not transmit into the chassis. On the ALX53 it is field selectable, and it reverses back to standard locked lever engagement in the field without a different part number. Useful on school corridors and multi-family common doors where levers get kicked.
13) I need to match the other doors in my building. What finishes does the Schlage ALX53 come in?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. All ten are offered against every cylinder option. The 626AM antimicrobial finish is the one to specify for healthcare and food service touch points.
14) I have an office door that needs a key outside but I also want it to stay unlocked all day. Is the ALX53 the right function, or do I need something else?
The ALX53 handles it: with the inside button at home the door is unlocked and free-swinging both ways, and pushing the button secures the outside lever when you leave. If you want the outside lever locked at all times with a key required for every entry, that is the ALX80 storeroom function instead. For classroom control, where the outside lever is locked and unlocked only by key, use the ALX70. Non-keyed openings take the ALX10 passage or ALX40 privacy.
15) What else could I buy instead of the Schlage ALX53 for a Grade 2 keyed entrance lever?
Direct Grade 2 entrance alternatives include the Hager 2525, a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lever rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon B511CP6D, a Grade 2 medium duty entry/office lever. The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is a Grade 2 option that comes with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway on a 2-3/8 inch backset, which matters if you already key everything to Schlage C. Where you want Grade 1 rather than Grade 2, the Dexter C1000 entry/office lever covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
16) Can I stock one ALX chassis and change functions later instead of buying a whole new lock?
Yes, and that is the point of the modular ALX design. One chassis fits all functions and cores, and the chassis lets you set the function in the field, so a room that changes use does not need new hardware. You can buy it factory configured, less levers, or as component kits for on site assembly, which is how locksmiths keep truck stock down and distributors configure uncommon lever and finish combinations same day.
17) I need a keyed entrance lever on a Schlage C keyway but at a lighter grade - what are the options?
The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/8 inch backset and covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body over the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thickness range. The Schlage ALX53 itself can be ordered with a P conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and is a Grade 2 heavy duty lock.
18) Which of these lever locks are not keyed and cannot stand in for an entrance lock?
Several cylindrical levers in the same size family carry no cylinder at all. The Falcon B101 and Accentra 5301LN Augusta are Grade 2 passage levers, the Falcon K101 and Corbin Russwin CL3110 are Grade 1 passage levers, and the BEST 7KC 1DT and 9K 1DT are dummy trim with no latch mechanism. The Schlage ALX53 is a keyed lock with a key cylinder outside and a push button inside, so none of those will secure the opening.
19) What do I use for a classroom opening in the same size family as the ALX53?
The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is Grade 2 with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset, which matches the 2-3/4 inch backset the Schlage ALX53 ships with by default. The Dexter C1000 classroom lever is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the C1000 classroom security version adds keyed control from both sides of the opening.
20) Can I put a knob instead of a lever on a keyed entrance opening?
The Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, Grade 2, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors - the same thickness range the Schlage ALX53 chassis covers. Note that the ALX53 lever trim is what meets ADA requirements; a knob trim is a different decision on an opening where that matters.
21) We want to drop the keys and go to a code - what keypad lever replaces a keyed entrance lock?
The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, matching the Schlage ALX53 Grade 2 level without a key cylinder. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination covering 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, but it is passage function, so it does not lock the opening the way an ALX53 entrance lock does. Emtek also offers a Classic keypad leverset.
22) Our building runs Yale hardware but the keying is Schlage - how does that affect a lock swap?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how an existing Yale lock gets brought onto a Schlage key system. The Schlage ALX53 avoids the question on its own: it accepts a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, SFIC less core, FSIC less core, or ships less conventional cylinder so an existing core drops straight in.
23) Is a Grade 3 residential entrance lever an acceptable stand-in on a commercial door?
The Callan Artino 360201 and Callan Bennett BN3001R are Grade 3 entrance leversets, and the Bennett pairs the lever with a deadbolt combo; the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage ALX53 is a commercial Grade 2 heavy duty lock certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, so on an opening specified to that standard the Grade 3 levers are a different class of hardware.
24) Is the Schlage ALX53 an electronic or keypad lock?
No, it is a mechanical keyed cylindrical lever lock, key on the outside and a push button inside. If the opening actually calls for code entry rather than keys, look at the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock or the Lockey 1150 mechanical keypad lever set, which covers 1-1/8 to 2 inch doors.
25) What is the Schlage ALX53 made of?
Zinc and steel through the chassis and trim, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no small loose parts falling out on an install or a service call.
26) Which non-keyed levers can I pair with the ALX53 to finish out the rest of the suite?
For the openings on the same job that do not take a key, the Accentra 4601LN and 5301LN Augusta are Grade 2 passage cylindrical levers, the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever with the Withnell design for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Callan Bentley BN5051 is a Grade 2 dummy lever. All sit at the same Grade 2 level as the Schlage ALX53 keyed entrance lock.

A Reliable and Simple Entrance Lock

Posted by Aiden on Jul 14th 2023

Hey there, I'm Olivia, and I recently purchased the Schlage ALX53 Entrance Lock Grade 2 Cylindrical Non-Keyed Lever Lock from ZenSupply. One thing I really like about this lock is its reliability. It provides solid security and ease of use. However, I did notice that the lever handle feels a bit loose and could use some improvement in terms of durability. Despite that, I appreciate the simplicity and functionality of this lock. It does the job well, and I feel safer with it installed on my entrance. Great choice, ZenSupply!
