1) Do I need to specify handing for a Schlage ALX53 lever lock?
No handing to specify. The ALX53 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand doors and there is no wrong-hand return to deal with on a job with mixed swings.
2) How does the ALX53 entrance function actually work when someone pushes the inside button?
Key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch. Push the button and the outside lever locks; a key outside or simply turning the inside lever unlocks it.
