Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX53P SPA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ALX53 Sparta lever?
No handing to specify. The ALX53 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. That is what makes it workable as truck stock or as a building-wide standard, since a locksmith carrying one part can answer any door in the building.
2) Which cylinder options does the Schlage ALX53 come in, and what do I get if I already run small format interchangeable cores?
Four cylinder choices. P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, supplied with the lock. B is SFIC less core and J is FSIC less core, both for facilities already running their own interchangeable core system, so you install your existing cores. L is less conventional cylinder, for when you are fitting your own mortise-style conventional cylinder. The ALX chassis also accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where high security keying is required.
3) Can I get several Schlage ALX53 locks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. Keying is a required selection at order: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike puts multiple locks on one key, and there is a None option that goes with the less-cylinder configurations. There is also a key code field if the openings have to match an existing key system already in the building. Two keys come with the lock.
4) Is the Schlage ALX53 rated for a fire door, and does it meet ADA?
Fire door use is covered: the ALX Series is UL/cUL listed, all locks 3-hour on A label fire doors up to 4 x 8 or 4 x 10 foot single doors and 8 x 8 foot pairs, and 90 minutes on 8 x 10 foot pairs with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. The lock meets ADA requirements, is tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 2, and complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements. For California Referenced Standards Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply.
5) Is the ALX53 tough enough for a high traffic entrance where people hang on the lever?
Heavy duty within Grade 2, and the Vandlgard feature is the part that matters for abuse. With Vandlgard set, the outside lever rotates freely when locked instead of transmitting force into the chassis, so someone yanking on a locked lever does not break it. It is field selectable and field reversible back to non-Vandlgard engagement, so you decide at the door rather than at the order. Body is zinc and steel with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, and the deep-drawn spindle engages the lever at five points to stop droop and wobble.
6) I have Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks on the main doors. Will an ALX53 match them on the secondary openings?
That is exactly the pairing the ALX Series is built for. ALX suites with ND Series Grade 1 locks, and the lever designs are matched across the two, so the Sparta lever reads the same down a corridor whether the door behind it is Grade 1 or Grade 2. Use ND where the traffic or the spec calls for Grade 1, ALX on offices and secondary doors, and keep one key system and one look. ND also brings 15 additional functions plus 4 electrified options that ALX does not carry.
7) My door is 2 inches thick. Will the Schlage ALX53 work on it?
No. The ALX chassis is rated 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, so a 2 inch door is outside it. For that thickness, the Falcon K101 covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series is built for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, both Grade 1. On the Grade 2 side, the Hager 2525 entry lever is listed for 1-3/8 to 2 inches.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage ALX53 Sparta entrance lever?
The Schlage ALX53 is a Grade 2 cylindrical entrance lever with a key cylinder outside, push button inside and a deadlatch. The closest match from another brand is the Hager 2525, a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle that accepts 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both are Grade 2 lever locks in the entrance function, so a property manager standardizing entry doors across a building can put either on the same opening.
9) Is there a Grade 1 lever lock to use instead of the Schlage ALX53 on a high traffic entry?
The ALX53 is certified Grade 2. Where a specification calls for Grade 1 on a keyed entry opening, the Dexter C1000 Series entry/office lever is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a clutching, keyed design for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. An institutional buyer writing Grade 1 into the hardware schedule should quote the C1000 entry/office rather than the ALX53.
10) Which lever lock should I use if the door needs to stay locked at all times instead of an entrance function?
The Schlage ALX53 is an entrance function, locked and unlocked by the inside push button and the outside key. For a door that must remain locked from outside at all times, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Storeroom removes the inside button from the equation, which is what a mechanical room or supply closet usually wants.
11) Is the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever a drop-in for the Schlage ALX53?
Not without checking the latch. The Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage ALX53 ships standard with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch. If the existing bore is prepped at 2-3/4 inch, the AG00 needs the matching backset; the ALX53 also offers 2-3/8 inch backset deadlatch options in square and round corner.
12) Which lock takes the same Schlage C keyway as the ALX53 so it keys into the same system?
The Schlage ALX53 is available with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, along with SFIC and FSIC less core options. Among other brands, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever are supplied with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. A locksmith extending an existing C keyway master system can bring those into the same key schedule.
13) Are the Accentra Augusta 5301LN and Falcon B101 substitutes for the Schlage ALX53?
No. The Schlage ALX53 is keyed, with a key cylinder outside and a push button inside. The Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in the passage/closet function and the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design; neither is keyed. They look nearly identical on the door but give no security at all, so they only suit an opening that never needs to lock.
14) What entrance lever fits a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch?
The Schlage ALX53 accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors with minimal chassis adjustment. On a thicker door, the Deltana 6201 Manchester, 6411 Morant and 6431 Linstead entry levers all cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Hager 2525 Grade 2 commercial entry lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch as well. For a heavy duty range, the Falcon K101 reaches 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, though it is a passage function rather than keyed.
15) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX53 and the ALX50 entrance/office lock?
Both are keyed entrance locks with a key cylinder outside and a push button inside, but they carry different ANSI functions. The ALX53 is ANSI F109 Entrance Lock; the ALX50 is ANSI F84... correction, the ALX50 is ANSI F82 Entrance/Office Lock. On the ALX53, pushing the button locks the outside lever and it stays locked until a key or the inside lever releases it; push and turn the button and the outside key retracts the latch only, and the button has to be returned home before it unlocks. If you want a straight classroom or storeroom behaviour instead, the ALX70 (F84 Classroom) and ALX80 (F86 Storeroom) are the siblings in the same series.
16) Can someone get out of the room if the ALX53 is locked from the inside?
The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, whatever the button is doing. Locking is done with the push/turn button on the inside rose and only ever affects the outside lever, so there is no condition where a person inside the room has to know the button state to get out. That is the behaviour a code official expects on an entrance opening.
17) I need an electrified or access-controlled entrance lever. Can the ALX53 do that?
No. The ALX53 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock with no electrified option in the series; the electrified functions live in Schlage's ND Series. If the opening needs power, look at a fail safe electrified cylindrical lever such as the Corbin Russwin CL33903, offered in 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. For a standalone coded opening with no wiring, the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock is a Grade 2 alternative.
18) What else could I buy instead of a Schlage ALX53 for a Grade 2 commercial entrance lever?
The closest cross-brand equivalents are the Hager 2525, a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lever rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon B511CP6D, a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever in entry/office function. Cal-Royal's AG00 entrance lever is another Grade 2 option, supplied 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset, which suits a building already keyed to Schlage C. If the budget will not carry Grade 2, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, but it is a lighter lock than the ALX53's heavy duty Grade 2.
19) Can I change an ALX53 entrance lock to a classroom or storeroom function later without buying a new lock?
Yes, and that is the point of the modular chassis. One ALX chassis fits all functions and all cores, and the patent pending design allows quick in-field function set up, so a facility repurposing a room can change what the lock does without replacing hardware. Purchase options follow the same logic: factory configured and ready to install, lock less levers, or as chassis, function and lever kits assembled on site. The keyed functions are ALX50, ALX53, ALX70 and ALX80; the non-keyed side is ALX10 passage, ALX40 privacy, ALX44 hospital privacy, ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy.
20) Does a keyed entrance lock like the ALX53 hold the door shut on its own, or do I still need a deadbolt?
The ALX53 uses a deadlatch, which is an anti-shim latch: the auxiliary plunger rides the strike lip and blocks the latchbolt from being carded or slipped once the door is closed. For a keyed side or entry door that is the security the function is built around. It is not a deadbolt, though, and it does not throw a separate bolt. If the opening needs both in one order, the Callan Bennett is an entrance leverset supplied as a deadbolt combo.
21) What is the difference between a Schlage ALX53 and a Falcon B511CP6D?
Both are Grade 2 keyed cylindrical lever locks. The Falcon B511CP6D carries the entry/office function and a medium duty rating, while the Schlage ALX53 is rated heavy duty in the entrance function with a non-handed chassis and a 2-3/4 inch backset as standard. A contractor choosing between them is choosing duty level and function code, not two versions of the same lock.
22) What do I order for a classroom door if the entrance function is not right?
The Schlage ALX53 is an entrance function lock. For a classroom opening, the Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever in the AG Series with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Where the door must be lockable from inside during a lockdown, the Dexter C1000 classroom security version carries that function.
23) Will a Baldwin Estate 5103 or Emtek dummy lever work in place of a Schlage ALX53?
Only on a door that does not latch. The Baldwin Estate 5103 comes as a passage lever, a privacy lever and left and right hand half dummy versions with the 5048 rose, and the Emtek Arts and Crafts and Cortina levers are sold as dummy pairs. Dummy trim is fixed and has no latch or cylinder, while the Schlage ALX53 is a keyed cylindrical lock with a deadlatch. Note also that the Baldwin half dummies are handed, where the ALX53 chassis is non-handed.
24) What lever lock takes a keypad instead of a key on an entry door?
The Schlage ALX53 is a mechanical, non-electronic keyed lock. For entry without a key, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a keypad lever in the Classic series, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination for doors from 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. The Lockey needs no batteries, which matters on a remote gate house or an unheated outbuilding.
25) Which lock should I use on a restroom or patient room instead of an entrance lever?
The Schlage ALX53 is a keyed entrance lock and is not intended for a privacy opening. For a bed or bath door, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors and the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, non-keyed and fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Privacy locks release from outside with a tool rather than a key.
26) Does the Accentra 107S adapter let a Yale lock take my Schlage keys?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, so it addresses the cylinder in a Yale lock rather than replacing a lock. The Schlage ALX53 already accepts Schlage cylinders directly and accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, with SFIC less core, FSIC less core, less conventional cylinder and conventional 6-pin C keyway options. A locksmith unifying a mixed building keys the ALX53 openings natively and uses the adapter only on the Yale hardware being kept.
27) What finishes does the Schlage ALX53 Sparta lever come in, including anything for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM antimicrobial version is the one specified for healthcare and other touch-sensitive facilities, and every cylinder option is offered in it.
