Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX53P RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset does the Schlage ALX53 use, and can I get it for a 2-3/8 inch backset door prep?
Ships standard with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch (part 47267042, square corner, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch faceplate). If your existing bore is on a 2-3/8 inch backset, choose one of the 2-3/8 inch latches instead: 47267051 (1-1/8 x 2-1/4 square corner), 47267052 (1 x 2-1/4 square corner), or 47267054 (1 x 2-1/4 round corner). The backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore, so measure that before you pick.
2) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX53 and the ALX50 entrance lock?
Both are keyed entrance functions in the ALX Series, but they are different ANSI functions: the ALX53 is ANSI F109 and the ALX50 is ANSI F82 Entrance/Office. On the ALX53, the inside button locks the outside lever, and with the button pushed and turned the outside key retracts the latch only, so the lever stays locked until someone returns the button to home. That is the behavior you want on a door that has to stay locked against casual key access from the outside. If you want the simpler push-button office arrangement, the ALX50 is the one to specify.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage ALX53 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The ALX53 is non-handed, and the latch is reversible, so one lock works on either swing. That removes the most common ordering mistake on a lever lock and means a property manager can stock one part for a whole building.
4) Can I get the Schlage ALX53 to take my existing small format interchangeable core?
Yes. Cylinder prep is an ordering choice: B for SFIC less core, J for FSIC less core, R for Schlage FSIC prep supplied with a core, P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, or L for less conventional cylinder. If you already run SFIC across the building, order the B prep and drop your own cores in. The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where you need high security.
5) Can I put the Schlage ALX53 on a fire rated door?
Yes. ALX Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour, A label fire doors up to 4 x 8 or 4 x 10 foot single doors and 8 x 8 foot pairs, and 90-minute on 8 x 10 foot pairs when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. The lock also meets ADA requirements, and it complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements.
6) I have Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks on my main doors. Will the ALX53 match them on the secondary doors?
Yes, that is what the ALX is built for. The lever designs are made to suit the ND Series Grade 1 locks, so you can run Grade 1 ND on high-traffic openings and Grade 2 ALX on offices and secondary doors with the levers and finishes still matching down the corridor. ND also offers 15 more functions plus 4 electrified options if a particular opening needs something the ALX range does not cover.
7) What is the closest Grade 2 keyed entrance lever to the Schlage ALX53 Rhodes if I need a different brand on the same opening?
The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle, which puts it on the same duty class and function as the ALX53 Rhodes entrance lock. The ALX53 carries an ANSI/BHMA F109 designation with a key cylinder outside, push button inside, and deadlatch, at a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Hager 2525 is listed for a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range. Cal-Royal AG00 is another Grade 2 entrance lever, supplied with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, so it lands on doors already bored for the shorter backset.
8) I need a keyed lever that stays locked at all times instead of an entrance function with a push button - what should I order?
An entrance function like the ALX53 Rhodes uses an inside push button to set the outside lever, so the door can be left unlocked. Where the outside lever must stay locked and be released only by key, a storeroom function is the right call. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
9) The opening is a classroom door - is the ALX53 entrance function the right lock, or is there a better option?
An entrance function keys from outside and locks with an inside push button, which is not how a classroom door is normally specified - a classroom lock is keyed from outside with no inside locking button. For that opening, the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different at a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the ALX53's 2-3/4 inch backset prep. The Dexter C1000 is a Grade 1 classroom cylindrical lever lock with clutching for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and a Grade 1 classroom security version is also made in the C1000 line.
10) The door is a 2 inch thick opening - does a Grade 2 entrance lever fit, or do I need a different lock?
The ALX53 Rhodes accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness with minimal chassis adjustment. For thicker leaves, the Hager 2525 Grade 2 entry lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch and is fire rated. Only the Hager 2525 among those is a keyed entry function.
11) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX53 and do I need to order it that way?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is locked, so kicking or hanging on the lever does not transmit force into the chassis. On the ALX it is field selectable and field reversible, meaning you can switch between Vandlgard and standard locked lever engagement after the lock is on the door instead of returning it. Worth having on dormitory, school, and multi-family corridor doors where lever abuse is what kills locks. Either way, the inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
12) Can I key several Schlage ALX53 locks alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. Keying is an order choice: KD keyed different (standard), KA keyed alike for multiple locks, or none if you are supplying your own cylinders or cores. If you are matching an existing system, there is a key code field on the order to give us the code to cut to. Each keyed lock comes with 2 keys.
13) Is a Grade 2 lever lock like the Schlage ALX53 heavy duty enough for a commercial building, or should I step up to Grade 1?
The ALX53 is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and is rated heavy duty for commercial use, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. That covers offices, storage, back-of-house, and multi-family unit entries. For an opening taking constant public traffic, a Grade 1 cylindrical is the step up: the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series and the Falcon K Series are Grade 1 cylindrical levers we carry, both with a fire rating on record. Note both of those Corbin and Falcon families list a door thickness starting at 1-3/4 and 1-3/8 inches respectively, so check your door before switching.
14) I need a classroom or storeroom function, not entrance. Does the ALX Series cover that?
Yes, in the same series with the same lever and finish so the openings match: ALX70 is the ANSI F84 classroom lock and ALX80 is the ANSI F86 storeroom lock. Non-keyed functions in the family are ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, and ALX170 and ALX172 dummy trim. Because one ALX chassis fits all functions and cores, a facility can change what an opening does without buying a whole new lock.
15) Does the Schlage ALX53 meet ADA and the California lever return requirement?
ADA requirements are met. On the California Referenced Standards Code, ALX levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply, so check the return dimension of the lever design you are specifying against that limit when the job is in California.
16) Can I buy just the lever or just the chassis for a Schlage ALX, or only the complete lock?
Either way. The ALX Series is modular: it ships as a complete factory configured lock ready to install, or you can buy it less levers, or buy chassis, function, and lever kits separately and build the lock you need on site. A locksmith running truck stock can configure an uncommon lever and finish on the spot instead of ordering and waiting, and a facility can change an opening's function in the field on the patent pending chassis without replacing the hardware.
17) Is a Falcon B511 the same thing as a Schlage ALX53 Rhodes?
They are close but not identical in function naming. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with an entry/office function, medium duty. The ALX53 Rhodes is a Grade 2 cylindrical leverset carrying ANSI/BHMA F109 with a key cylinder outside, push button inside and a deadlatch, and is rated heavy duty. On the ALX53 the entrance function is F109; entry/office on the Schlage side is a separate F82 function, so confirm which button behavior the door needs before treating the two as interchangeable.
18) What is a lower-cost entrance lever alternative to a Grade 2 commercial lock for a light-use interior door?
Where the traffic does not justify a Grade 2 commercial lock like the ALX53 Rhodes, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. Note the drop in rating: the ALX53 is Grade 2, commercial, heavy duty, so on doors that must hold a Grade 2 spec a Grade 3 lever will not satisfy it.
19) The door needs a key plus a separate deadbolt - is the ALX53 Rhodes that, or do I need something else?
The ALX53 Rhodes is a single-cylinder keyed entrance leverset with a deadlatch; the deadlatch keeps the latchbolt from being carded, but it is not a deadbolt. For an opening that needs a bolt as well, the Callan Bennett is a Grade 3 entrance leverset supplied as a deadbolt combo.
20) I want the same lever look on doors that do not need a key - what non-keyed locks pair with a keyed entrance leverset?
On openings where no key is wanted, matching non-keyed cylindrical levers include the Falcon B101, a Grade 2 non-handed passage lever, and the Hager 2510, a Grade 2 passage lever with the Withnell design for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. For a bathroom or bedroom, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever, and for a door leaf that only needs a pull, the BEST 7KC single dummy trim is a Grade 2 non-keyed cylindrical lever. The ALX53 Rhodes itself is keyed with two keys included and is non-handed.
21) Can an electronic keypad lever replace a keyed entrance lever so tenants stop carrying keys?
It can change how the door is accessed rather than how it is bored. The ALX53 Rhodes is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed with a cylinder outside and a push button inside, offered with conventional 6-pin C keyway, SFIC and FSIC cylinder preps. Code-entry alternatives include the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock, Grade 2, and the Lockey 1150 heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Moving to either means the opening no longer runs on the building's Schlage key system.
22) The opening is bored for knobs, not levers - what keyed entrance option fits without changing trim?
The Arrow HK11 is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, Grade 2, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Its turn-pushbutton entrance behavior parallels the ALX53 Rhodes, which uses a key cylinder outside with a push button inside. Note that the ALX53 is a lever, and the description states all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code and that the lock meets ADA requirements - a knob does not carry the same accessibility position.
23) What should I use instead of an entrance lever on a patient room or detention-type door?
An entrance function with an inside push button is not suited to a door where the occupant must not be able to lock themselves in. For those openings the Arrow MK33 is a Grade 2 asylum cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, heavy duty, and the Dexter C1000 asylum lock is a Grade 1 F87 cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Schlage C keyway on the Arrow MK33 matches the conventional 6-pin C keyway option the ALX53 Rhodes is offered with, which keeps both on one key system.
24) My building is standardized on Schlage keys but I have Yale hardware on some doors - how do I keep one key system?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, Grade 1, which lets Schlage cylinders go into that hardware. On the Schlage side, the ALX53 Rhodes is offered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, SFIC and FSIC preps, and less-cylinder options, so the same key system can carry across both sets of doors.
25) I need the lock to release on a fire alarm or card reader - can a keyed entrance lever do that?
No. The ALX53 Rhodes is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed from outside with a push button inside. For an access-controlled opening, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, offered with the NZ lever and D rose.
26) What finishes does the Schlage ALX53 Rhodes lever come in, and is there anything for a healthcare setting?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM antimicrobial version of satin chrome is the one specified for hospitals, clinics, and long term care where touch surfaces are part of the infection control spec.
27) Does the ALX53 lever droop or get wobbly like cheaper lever locks?
The mechanism is built against that specific failure: a deep-drawn spindle with 5 points of lever engagement to prevent droop and wobble, Grade 1 compression springs behind the lever return, and a zinc and steel body. Captured screws in the latch, strike, and inside spring cage also mean no small loose parts to lose during install or service, which is the difference between one trip and two on a truck stock job.
28) Does the Schlage ALX53 need power or wiring at the door?
No. The ALX53 is a fully mechanical cylindrical lock, no power, no wiring, no batteries, so it keeps working through an outage and needs no electrician on the install. If the opening needs access control, the Schlage ND Series it suites with carries 4 electrified options.
29) Will an Accentra Augusta lever work as a substitute for a Schlage ALX53 entrance lock?
Not on a keyed opening. The Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in a passage/closet function and the 4601LN Augusta is a Grade 2 passage lever, both non-keyed, while the 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy. The ALX53 Rhodes is a keyed single-cylinder entrance lock with a key cylinder outside and push button inside, so an Augusta passage or dummy trim gives the lever appearance without the locking function.
30) Is a Baldwin or Emtek lever an equivalent to a Grade 2 commercial keyed entrance lock?
They serve a different opening. The Baldwin Estate 5103 with the 5048 rose comes in passage, privacy, and left- or right-hand half dummy versions, and the Emtek Classic and Arts and Crafts leversets listed are dummy pairs. Those are decorative trim and non-keyed functions. The ALX53 Rhodes is a commercial Grade 2 keyed entrance leverset in zinc and steel, non-handed, with a deadlatch, so the Baldwin and Emtek levers are not a functional swap for it on a secured door.

    Nice grade 2 lever

Posted by Kevin Barnard on May 20th 2025

makes for a nice substitute for the Schlage ND series lever at half the price. almost identical in construction to the ND series.
