OVERVIEW

Schlage B Series deadbolts have long been the industry standard for tubular deadbolts. Built Schlage strong, B Series deadbolts are among the most secure and durable in the industry. The commercial Grade 1 deadbolts are also among the most beautiful with a sleek, broadly angled trim ring in a shallow, 7/8" depth offered in 11 finishes. A wide variety of functions and choice of cylinders including geographically exclusive Primus XP options makes them suitable for nearly any deadlock application need.

Schlage B661P 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Schlage B661 and the B660 deadbolt?
Function. The B661 is a blank rose by cylinder deadbolt (E0161): keyed from the outside, plain blank plate on the inside with no thumbturn. The B660 (E0151) is thumbturn by cylinder, the usual entry setup. Pick the B661 where you do not want anyone throwing or retracting the bolt from the inside without a key, such as a storefront or stockroom locked from outside. If nobody can be inside behind that door, or egress code requires a turn, use the B660 instead.
2) Can I use a Schlage B661 deadbolt on a fire rated door?
The B600 deadbolts are UL 10C listed and 3-hour fire rated as auxiliary locks for A label single doors up to 4 by 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Auxiliary is the operative word: it is a secondary lock alongside the primary latching device, not the fire door's latch. Note the B661 has no inside thumbturn, so on an opening that needs free egress it is the wrong function.
3) Is the Schlage B661 Grade 1, and does the cylinder choice change the grade?
Yes, and yes. The B600 deadbolt is ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1 certified with a conventional cylinder. Order it FSIC and it certifies Grade 2; SFIC drops it to Grade 3. If your spec or your facility standard says Grade 1 deadbolt, you have to order the conventional cylinder version to hold that grade.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage B661 deadbolt?
Four decisions. Cylinder type: conventional 6-pin C keyway (P6), FSIC less core (J), or SFIC less core (B). Finish, from eleven choices. Keying: keyed different, keyed alike for multiple locks, or none if you are taking a less-cylinder option and stocking your own cores. And keyway: standard C, or S123. The two less-core options ship without a core, so you supply cores from your own system.
5) Can I key a Schlage B661 into my existing building master key system?
Yes, several ways. Conventional order ships as a 6-pin solid brass cylinder in the C keyway with two nickel silver cut keys, and factory master keying is available. If your building runs interchangeable cores, order it less core in FSIC or SFIC prep and drop in your own cores. Open and restricted keyway options exist, and the B600 accepts all three cylinder formats: conventional, FSIC and SFIC. For multiple doors on one key, specify keyed alike at order.
6) What else can I use instead of a Schlage B661 for a cylinder by blank plate deadlock?
Corbin Russwin builds the same function in Grade 1 cylindrical deadlocks: the DL3011 covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the DL3211 and DL2211 are both fixed at 1-3/4 inch. The DL3011 is the one to look at if your door runs thicker than 2 inches, which is past the B661's 2 inch ceiling. Staying in Schlage, the B664 (E0101) is the no-inside-trim version if you want nothing at all on the inside face rather than a blank plate.
7) Is there a Schlage B600 deadbolt that matches C keyway hardware I already have on the building?
The conventional B661 ships in the Schlage C keyway as standard, with S123 available. Several other lines here are cut to Schlage C as well, so a mixed-brand building can still run one key: the Hager 3115 Grade 2 cylinder by thumbturn, the Hager 3118 Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a 6-pin cylinder, and the Hager 3214 double cylinder all use the Schlage C keyway and cover 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. That matters when you are adding a few openings to an existing key system rather than starting one.
8) The opening needs a thumbturn on the inside, not a blank plate. What deadbolt should be used instead of a B661?
The B661 is cylinder x blank plate, so there is nothing to operate from the inside. For a Grade 1 lock with an inside thumbturn, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt, cylinder x thumbturn, heavy duty, with an adjustable backset. The Accentra D111 is also Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn, with a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. The Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. This is a life-safety decision on any door that has to be exited without a key.
9) What is the closest Grade 1 equivalent to a Schlage B661 from another manufacturer?
The Corbin Russwin DL3011 is the nearest match in function. Like the B661, which is a cylinder x blank plate deadbolt, the DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in a cylinder x blank configuration, so the inside face carries no thumbturn. The DL3011 covers doors 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch. The Corbin Russwin DL3211 is the same cylinder x blank Grade 1 arrangement for a 1-3/4 inch door only. Either gives you keyed-outside, no-inside-operation on an opening where the B661 would otherwise be specified.
10) The door is thicker than 2 inches. What deadbolt covers it if the Schlage B661 does not?
The B661 covers 1-5/8 to 2 inch doors with a Conventional or FSIC cylinder and 1-3/4 to 2 inch with SFIC. For a thicker leaf, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in the same cylinder x blank arrangement and covers 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch. That keeps both the Grade 1 rating and the no-inside-trim function while picking up the extra thickness.
11) What deadbolt matches a Schlage B661 for a door that is only 1-3/8 inch thick?
The B661 starts at 1-5/8 inch with a Conventional or FSIC cylinder. Below that, the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and a 6-pin cylinder, covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors and fire rated. Since the B661 ships with a 6-pin Conventional cylinder in the C keyway, the Hager 3118 will take the same keys in an existing C keyway system. It is cylinder x thumbturn, so the inside face operates where the B661's does not.
12) The opening needs keyed access from both sides. What replaces a Schlage B661?
The B661 is keyed on one side only, with a blank plate opposite. For keyed-both-sides in Grade 1, the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt, extra heavy duty, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter DB1000 double cylinder is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. The Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder on the Schlage C keyway for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, which matches the B661's C keyway if the system has to stay common. Confirm double cylinder is permitted on the opening before specifying.
13) What finishes does the Schlage B661 deadbolt come in?
Eleven: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. All eleven are offered against each of the three cylinder types, so you are not forced off a finish by your keying choice. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default, and 626AM is the one to pick for healthcare or food service where an antimicrobial finish is specified.
14) How much does the Schlage B661 bolt throw and how deep does the trim sit off the door?
The bolt is sintered steel with a hardened steel anti-saw pin, 1 inch throw, in a 1 inch diameter housing. The trim ring is solid brass or bronze at 7/8 inch depth, so it sits shallow and does not project far off the face of the door. Drive-in bolt options are available if your prep suits that instead of a faceplate.
15) Is the Schlage B661 deadbolt strong enough for a door that gets kicked or pried?
That is what the B600 is built around. A metal dust box reinforcer anchors into the wood frame with three 3 inch screws against kick-in. The cylinder collar free spins and is broadly angled to resist wrenching and prying. Hardened steel ball bearings sit in front of the mounting bolts against drilling, and a removable security shield blocks ice-pick attack through the door. The fixed 2-3/4 inch backset itself adds tamper resistance over an adjustable one. Rated heavy duty.
16) Is the Schlage B661 overkill for an interior office door, and what is a lighter option?
For a low-traffic interior door a Grade 1 commercial bolt with a hardened anti-saw pin and a drill-resistant mounting is more lock than the opening needs. Lighter options ZenSupply carries include the Arrow DBX61 single cylinder deadbolt at Grade 2, the Cal-Royal CB160 Grade 2 with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard, and the Cal-Royal ED500 Grade 3 with an adjustable backset for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Keep the B661 for exterior, stairwell, storefront and other openings that take real abuse.
17) Will a Schlage B661 deadbolt match the rest of the Schlage hardware in my building?
The B600 deadbolts suite with nearly all Schlage and Von Duprin products, and are built to pair visually with Schlage, Von Duprin and LCN devices for one look across the building. The trim is a shallow 7/8 inch broadly angled ring in eleven finishes, so you can match 626 satin chrome levers and exit devices on the same corridor without a finish mismatch.
18) Does the Schlage B661 deadbolt meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
The B600 deadbolts are BAA (Buy American Act) compliant, which is what most federal and many state and municipal procurement specs are asking for. The line also carries an ADA compliant thumbturn design, though that applies to the thumbturn functions rather than the B661, which has a blank plate inside.
19) Is there a lower-grade alternative to the Schlage B661 for a lighter-traffic door?
The B661 is Grade 1, heavy duty. Where the opening does not call for Grade 1, the Arrow DBX61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt, cylinder x thumbturn, and the Falcon D211 is a Grade 2 classroom-function deadbolt, medium duty, cylinder x thumbturn. Note that both put a thumbturn on the inside rather than the B661's blank plate, so they are a step down in grade and a change in function at the same time. The Arrow E61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock prepped for SFIC less core, covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
20) Can a Bravura 310B or Cal-Royal CB160 be used in place of a Schlage B661?
Not as a like-for-like. Both are cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts, so they operate from the inside, where the B661 is cylinder x blank plate with no inside operation. The Bravura 310B Elite is Grade 2 in a traditional round trim and the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard, against the B661's Grade 1. They are round-trim single cylinder deadbolts, not a replacement for a blank-plate deadlock.
21) What is the difference between a Schlage B661 and a Corbin Russwin DL2211?
Both are Grade 1 deadlocks in a cylinder x blank arrangement. The DL2211 is listed with a classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors, while the B661 is a one-way lock function on a fixed 2-3/4 inch backset covering 1-5/8 to 2 inch doors with a Conventional or FSIC cylinder. The B661 is available with a 6-pin Conventional C keyway cylinder, a Schlage FSIC less core, or SFIC prep less core, in eleven finishes.
22) Is a Deltana CL200LM or Delaney LM Series an equivalent to a Schlage B661?
They share the grade but not the function. The Deltana CL200LM is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt, cylinder x thumbturn, and the Delaney LM Series is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt, cylinder x thumbturn, in dull chrome US26D. Both operate from the inside by turn. The B661 is cylinder x blank plate, a one-way lock with no inside operation, which is the whole point of specifying it. The Delaney LM is worth noting if you want a Grade 1 less-core lock to pair with an existing core program, which the B661 also offers through its FSIC and SFIC less core builds.
23) The door needs a deadbolt that is not keyed at all. What is used instead of a Schlage B661?
The B661 is keyed from the outside with a blank plate inside. For a non-keyed opening, the Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock, non-keyed, in a blank plate x thumbturn arrangement for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. That reverses the B661: the operating side is inside and the blank plate faces out.
24) Is the BEST 8T tubular deadbolt an alternative to a Schlage B661?
It is not a complete lock. The BEST 8T is a T Series tubular deadbolt tube component, meaning the bolt assembly on its own rather than a full deadbolt with trim and cylinder. The B661 is supplied as a complete one-way deadbolt with a 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, a 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch square corner strike, and two cut keys. Order the 8T only when you are replacing the tube in an existing BEST lock.
25) Is a Cal-Royal CRB800 a fire-rated alternative to a Schlage B661?
The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch, cylinder x thumbturn. The B661 is UL 10C listed and 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock for A label single doors up to 4 by 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Both carry the fire rating; the difference is the inside face, since the CRB800 has a thumbturn and the B661 is cylinder x blank plate.
26) Is a Codelocks CL200 or Dormakaba Saffire LX-D a substitute for a Schlage B661?
No. The B661 is a non-electronic Grade 1 heavy duty mechanical deadbolt. The Codelocks CL200 is a light duty surface deadbolt with key override, and the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override. Those are credential-based locks on a different duty level and a different mounting approach; they do not drop into a bored deadbolt prep the way the B661 does.
27) Which single cylinder deadbolts fit a wider door thickness range than a Schlage B661?
The B661 covers 1-5/8 to 2 inch doors with a Conventional or FSIC cylinder. The Deltana 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch, and the Dexter DB2000 single cylinder is Grade 2 for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. Both reach thinner doors than the B661 does, at a lower grade and with a different inside function, so use them where the opening does not demand Grade 1.
