OVERVIEW

Schlage B Series deadbolts have long been the industry standard for tubular deadbolts. Built Schlage strong, B Series deadbolts are among the most secure and durable in the industry. The commercial Grade 1 deadbolts are also among the most beautiful with a sleek, broadly angled trim ring in a shallow, 7/8" depth offered in 11 finishes. A wide variety of functions and choice of cylinders including geographically exclusive Primus XP options makes them suitable for nearly any deadlock application need.

Schlage SCH-B761P-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage B761 function actually do? Is there a thumbturn inside?
No thumbturn. The B761 is keyed outside, blank rose inside (ANSI function E0161), so the bolt can only be thrown or retracted with a key from the exterior. Nobody inside can operate it. That makes it a storage room, utility closet, or mechanical room lock, not an egress door. If you need inside thumbturn operation, the B760 (E0151) is the same deadbolt with a thumbturn inside.
2) Can I put a Schlage B761 deadbolt on an egress door?
Not where free egress is required. With a blank plate inside and key-only operation from outside, there is no way out without a key, which conflicts with egress requirements on occupied spaces. Use it on storage, mechanical, and closet doors. For a door people exit through, pick the thumbturn version (B760) or a classroom deadbolt (B763), where the inside thumbturn retracts the bolt.
3) What backset does the B761 use, and will it drop into an existing 2-3/8 inch prep?
The B761 ships 2-3/4 inch fixed backset as standard, and Schlage fixes it deliberately to resist tampering. The standard latch part (12-296) is the adjustable 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch deadbolt latch with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square-corner faceplate and 1 inch housing diameter, so a 2-3/8 inch prep can be handled with the adjustable latch option. Confirm which latch you are ordering if the existing cross-bore sits at 2-3/8.
4) Will the B761 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The standard strike is a 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch square-corner plate with no box (part 10-094), and the bolt throws a full 1 inch. If your frame has a square-corner strike of that size the replacement is straight across. ANSI, round corner, and thimble strike options exist for other frame preps. On wood frames the lock also comes with a metal dust box reinforcer and three 3 inch screws that anchor into the stud behind the jamb.
5) Is the Schlage B761 fire rated for a labeled door?
It is UL 10C listed and 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock for A label single doors up to 4 by 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Auxiliary is the key word: it is a supplementary deadbolt, not the primary latching device on the opening.
6) Is the B761 a true Grade 1 deadbolt?
Yes, with the conventional cylinder it is ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1 certified and rated heavy duty. The grading follows the cylinder format: FSIC builds certify Grade 2 and SFIC builds Grade 3. So if a Grade 1 line item is on your spec, order it with the conventional cylinder.
7) What cylinder and keyway does the B761 come with, and can I key it to my existing Schlage system?
Standard is a 6-pin solid brass conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, keyed different, with two nickel silver cut keys. A 5-pin conventional C keyway cylinder is also selectable. Keyed alike is available if you are doing several openings on one key, and factory master keying and restricted keyways are offered. If you already run Schlage C, it drops into the existing system. The B Series also accepts conventional, FSIC and SFIC cylinder formats, and there is a less-cylinder option if your locksmith is supplying cores.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage B761 cylinder x blank plate deadbolt?
The B761 is a Grade 1 commercial deadbolt with a cylinder outside and a blank plate inside, so nothing operates it from the interior. The closest cross-brand matches are the Corbin Russwin Grade 1 cylindrical deadlocks in cylinder x blank configuration: the DL3011 for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the DL3211 for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Corbin Russwin DL2211 is also cylinder x blank but is a classroom function on 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) I need a deadbolt that can be unlocked from inside without a key - what should I use instead of the Schlage B761?
The B761 is a cylinder x blank plate function, which gives no interior operation at all. For a thumbturn inside, cylinder x thumbturn Grade 1 options include the Falcon D111 with adjustable backset, the Dexter DB1000-SCT for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch, the Deltana CL200LM, and the Accentra D111 with a 2-3/8 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch.
10) What other deadbolts key into the Schlage C keyway like the B761?
The B761 ships with a 6-pin conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, so it can be brought onto an existing C-keyway system. Hager deadbolts also list the Schlage C keyway: the 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a 6-pin cylinder, the 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn, the 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder, and the 3215 is a Grade 2 single cylinder with a 1 inch throw. All four cover doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch and are fire rated.
11) Can I use an interchangeable core deadbolt in place of the Schlage B761?
The B761 comes with a 6-pin conventional cylinder in the C keyway and two cut keys. If the facility runs interchangeable cores instead, the Arrow E61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock prepped for SFIC and supplied less core, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch; the Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset supplied without a cylinder; and the Delaney LM Series is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D.
12) How tough is the bolt on the Schlage B700 deadbolt against drilling or sawing?
The bolt is solid sintered steel with a hardened steel anti-saw pin insert and throws 1 inch, and Schlage builds it thicker than most Grade 1 deadbolts. Hardened steel ball bearings shield the mounting bolts from drilling, the free-spinning angled collar resists wrenching and prying, and a removable security shield blocks ice-pick attacks through the door. Note that UL 437 attack-resistant cylinder listing applies to the B800 Series, not the B700.
13) What finishes does the Schlage B761 deadbolt come in, and will it match my other Schlage hardware?
Eleven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 7/8 inch solid brass or bronze trim ring is designed to suite with nearly all Schlage and Von Duprin products, so it matches across levers, exits and closers in a building standard. 626AM is the choice for healthcare corridors where antimicrobial touch surfaces are specified.
14) What is the alternative to a B761 if I want a cylinder-by-blank deadlock from another manufacturer?
The Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in cylinder by blank configuration covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, so it reaches thicker doors than the B761's 1-5/8 to 2 inch range. The DL3211 is the same cylinder by blank arrangement but listed at 1-3/4 inch doors only. Both are one-sided key operation like the B761.
15) I need a deadbolt with a thumbturn inside instead of a blank plate. What should I order?
Stay in the B Series and take the B760 (E0151), which is thumbturn by cylinder in the same body, or the B763 classroom deadbolt (E0171) where the inside thumbturn only retracts the bolt. If you are open to other brands, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset, and the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 cylinder by thumbturn for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors.
16) Does the Schlage B761 meet Buy American Act requirements for a federal job?
Yes, the B Series deadbolts are listed as BAA compliant, which is what most federal and many state-funded projects require on the hardware schedule. The thumbturn designs in the series are also ADA compliant, though that point is moot on the B761 since it has no inside trim.
17) Is there a lower-grade alternative to the Schlage B761 for a lighter-traffic opening?
The B761 is certified Grade 1 and rated heavy duty. Where a lighter spec is acceptable, Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolts include the Arrow DBX61, the Cal-Royal CB160 with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard, the Dexter DB2000-SCT for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Falcon D211, a medium duty Grade 2 classroom function. Grade 3 options include the Cal-Royal ED500 and LSD, both for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. All of these are cylinder x thumbturn rather than cylinder x blank plate.
18) If I need key control on both sides of the door, what replaces the Schlage B761?
The B761 has a key cylinder outside and a blank plate inside. For keyed operation from both faces, Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolts include the Design Hardware D1 Series, rated extra heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter DB1000-DCT for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. Grade 2 double cylinder options include the Dexter DB2000-DCT and the Delaney LU Series in stainless steel US32D.
19) I want the reverse of the B761 - thumbturn outside operation blocked, no cylinder. What is available?
The Schlage B761 is keyed outside with a blank plate inside. The Arrow E60 is the opposite arrangement, a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a blank plate on one face and a thumbturn on the other, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, which suits a door that is only bored partway through.
20) Which similarly named deadbolt items will not work as a substitute for the Schlage B761?
Several deadbolt-related items are components or different lock types rather than a drop-in for the B761, which is a complete bored Grade 1 deadbolt. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike for latchbolt and deadbolt functions with a straight lip, not a lock. The BEST 8T is a T Series tubular deadbolt tube component, and the Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer. The Codelocks CL200 is a light duty surface deadbolt with key override, and the Dormakaba D900 is a small case mortise deadbolt, both of which require different door prep.
21) Is there a cheaper Grade 2 or Grade 3 deadbolt if the opening does not need Grade 1?
For a lower-traffic opening the Arrow DBX61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt, and Cal-Royal's CB160 is Grade 2 with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard. Going lighter still, the Cal-Royal ED500 is Grade 3 with an adjustable backset for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. All three are cylinder by thumbturn, so none of them gives you the B761's key-only, no-inside-trim arrangement.
22) Is there an electronic alternative if I do not want a mechanical keyed deadbolt like the Schlage B761?
The B761 is a mechanical, non-electronic deadbolt. Electronic deadbolt alternatives include the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D RFID deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override, the Dormakaba Nova-D RFID multihousing smart deadbolt, the Codelocks CL2200 medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel, the Codelocks CL2210 electronic mortise deadbolt, and the Delaney KP400 Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with programmable remote.
