Schlage B680 Door Bolt - Grade 1 Deadbolt

Schlage B Series deadbolts have long been the industry standard for tubular deadbolts. Built Schlage strong, B Series deadbolts are among the most secure and durable in the industry. The commercial Grade 1 deadbolts are also among the most beautiful with a sleek, broadly angled trim ring in a shallow, 7/8" depth offered in 11 finishes. A wide variety of functions and choice of cylinders including geographically exclusive Primus XP options makes them suitable for nearly any deadlock application need.

Schlage SCH-B680-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset does the Schlage B680 use, and can I get 2-3/8 inch?
The B680 ships with a 2-3/4 inch fixed backset, which Schlage does deliberately: a fixed backset gives the lock more resistance to tampering than a collapsing adjustable one. Adjustable and other fixed backsets are offered as options, and the standard latch listed for it, the 12-296, is the adjustable 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch deadbolt latch. If your existing cross-bore is drilled at 2-3/8 inches, order the adjustable option rather than the fixed.
2) Will a Schlage B680 drop into the existing deadbolt prep and strike on my door?
The bolt housing is 1 inch in diameter and the faceplate is 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches with square corners, which is the standard tubular deadbolt prep. Bolt throw is 1 inch. The strike supplied is a square corner 1-1/8 by 2-3/4 inch plate (model 10-094) with no box, and ANSI, round corner and thimble strikes are offered if your frame is prepped differently. If your existing bolt hole is square-cornered at 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 and bored 1 inch, the B680 goes straight in.
3) Is the Schlage B680 rated for a fire door?
UL 10C listed and 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock on A label single doors up to 4 by 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Auxiliary is the operative word: it is a supplementary bolt, not the latching hardware that holds the fire door closed. The opening still needs its own fire rated latching device.
4) Is the B680 door bolt actually Grade 1, or does the keyless version drop a grade?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.5, with the ANSI function code E0191. The grade caveat in the B Series applies to cylinder format, not to the keyless bolt: keyed versions are Grade 1 with a conventional cylinder, Grade 2 with FSIC and Grade 3 with SFIC. The B680 has no cylinder, so that split does not apply. It is a heavy duty commercial lock and it is Buy American Act compliant, which matters on federally funded work.
5) Can I key a Schlage B680 into my existing master key system?
You cannot. The B680 has no cylinder in it at all, so there is nothing to key and nothing to master. If the door has to be part of your keying system, order one of the keyed B600 functions instead. Those accept all three cylinder formats, conventional, FSIC and SFIC, with open and restricted keyways and factory master keying, so they will go onto your existing system.
6) Does a double cylinder deadbolt substitute for a Schlage B680 door bolt?
It changes the opening rather than matching it. The B680 has an inside thumbturn and no exterior trim, so egress is immediate and no key is needed to leave. A double cylinder unit such as the Schlage B662 in the same series, the Dexter DB1000 double cylinder Grade 1 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, the Design Hardware D1 Series Grade 1 double cylinder for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Callan Model 210S Grade 3 double cylinder requires a key on both faces. That is a life-safety decision on any door in an egress path, and local code governs whether a key is permitted on the inside.
7) The opening needs a key from the outside - what Grade 1 deadbolt replaces a B680 door bolt?
The B680 is non-keyed by design, thumbturn inside with no exterior trim, so an outside key means a different function entirely. Within Schlage's own B600 line that is the B660, thumbturn by cylinder. Across brands, the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 cylinder by thumbturn for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch; the Accentra D111 is Grade 1 cylinder by thumbturn on a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors; and the Delaney LM Series is Grade 1 cylinder by thumbturn supplied less core for an interchangeable core keyway. The B680 is fixed 2-3/4 inch backset, so an existing 2-3/4 inch bore favors the Dexter or Delaney over the 2-3/8 inch Accentra.
8) What should be used instead of a B680 on a classroom door where the bolt must be keyed from the corridor?
A classroom opening needs a keyed function the B680 does not have. Schlage covers it in the same B600 line with the B663 classroom deadbolt, where the inside thumbturn retracts only and the outside cylinder throws and retracts. Cross-brand, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with an adjustable backset, and the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and a 6-pin cylinder for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Hager 3118 keyway matters if the building is already keyed to Schlage C.
9) Which deadbolt fits a door thicker than a Schlage B680 will take?
The B680 door bolt covers doors 1-3/8 inch through 2-1/2 inch, the widest range in the B600 line - conventional and FSIC cylinder versions stop at 2 inch and SFIC starts at 1-3/4 inch. For a keyed opening above 2 inch, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock, cylinder by blank, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The DL3011 is keyed outside with a blank inside plate, so it is a different function from the B680's inside thumbturn.
10) What looks like a substitute for a Schlage B680 but will not work as one?
Several parts sit near the B680 in search results without replacing it. The BEST 8T is a tubular deadbolt tube component, not a complete lock. The Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike for latchbolt and deadbolt functions with a straight lip - a strike, not a bolt; the B680 ships with its own 10-094 square corner strike, 1-1/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch. The Codelocks CL200 is a surface deadbolt with key override in light duty, and it mounts on the door face rather than through a 1 inch bore like the B680.
11) I need a deadbolt with no outside keyhole for a restroom or storage door. Is the B680 the right one or should I use a keyed deadlock?
For an opening where nobody needs outside key access, the B680 door bolt is the correct choice, and it is also the cheapest prep: only the inside gets trim, so there is nothing on the corridor face to be picked, drilled or vandalized. Choose a keyed function instead the moment a facilities or security person needs to get past it from outside. Note the classroom variant, B663, retracts by thumbturn only and still projects with a key from outside, which is the usual pick when a door has to be securable from the corridor but always openable from within.
12) Is the Schlage B680 thumbturn ADA compliant?
The thumbturn design is ADA compliant, so it operates without tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. That is the deciding detail on any accessible route door in a school, healthcare facility or multi-family building, and it is why this bolt gets specified over a knurled or coin-slot turn.
13) How secure is the bolt on a Schlage B680 against being forced or sawn?
The bolt is solid sintered steel with a hardened steel anti-saw pin insert, thrown 1 inch, and Schlage builds it thicker than most Grade 1 deadbolts. In a wood frame the supplied metal dustbox anchors with three 3 inch screws into the stud behind the jamb, which is what actually resists a kick-in, and a removable security shield covers the bolt against ice-pick attack through the gap. Hardened steel ball bearings shield the mounting bolts from drilling.
14) What finishes does the Schlage B680 come in, and will it match the other Schlage hardware in my building?
Eleven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome with an antimicrobial coating, and 643E aged bronze. All are weather resistant for interior and perimeter use. The trim ring is solid brass or bronze at 7/8 inch deep, and the B Series suites with nearly all Schlage and Von Duprin products, so it will read as one family alongside your existing levers and exit devices. The 626AM antimicrobial option is the one healthcare and food service buyers ask for.
15) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage B680 if I need a key cylinder on the outside?
Within the same Schlage family the answer is a keyed B600 function, B660 thumbturn by cylinder being the common one. From other brands ZenSupply stocks Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolts including the Accentra D111, which lists a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door range, the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder at 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inches, and the Falcon D111, a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with an adjustable backset. The Falcon is the closest match if you specifically want the classroom behaviour rather than a plain single cylinder.
16) Is there another one-sided deadbolt besides the Schlage B680 if I don't need Grade 1?
The Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, and it takes a half bore rather than a through bore, so it is a lighter prep for a light-traffic interior door. Where the opening sees commercial traffic or is on a fire rated assembly, stay with the B680: it is Grade 1, heavy duty, and UL 10C 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock, none of which the Callan lists. The Arrow E60 is another non-keyed option, a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a blank plate outside and a thumbturn inside, fitting 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, which is a blank plate on the outside rather than no trim at all.
17) Will a Schlage B680 work on a metal frame, or do I need the wood frame reinforcement?
The reinforcement supplied is a metal dust box with three 3 inch screws, which is aimed at wood frames where the screws reach past the jamb into the framing. On a hollow metal frame the strike is what carries the load and the deep screws have nothing to bite; the strike options include ANSI, round corner and thimble versions, and a thimble strike is the one used where the frame is already prepped for a bolt pocket. Pick the strike to match the frame prep rather than defaulting to the square corner 10-094 that ships as standard.
18) Is there a lighter-duty alternative to a Schlage B680 for an interior or low-traffic door?
Yes. The B680 is Grade 1 heavy duty; where a lower grade is acceptable the Cal-Royal LSD is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal ED500 is Grade 3 with an adjustable backset over the same door range. The Bravura 310B Elite is Grade 2 cylinder by thumbturn with traditional round trim. All three are keyed on the outside rather than one-sided, so they change how the door is operated, not just the duty level.
19) Which Grade 1 deadbolts compete with the Schlage B680 on an institutional standardization spec?
On a facility standard written to ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, the peers are the Design Hardware D1 Series, Grade 1 double cylinder in extra heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors; the Deltana CL200LM, Grade 1 cylinder by thumbturn; the Cal-Royal CRB800, a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch; and the Corbin Russwin DL3211, Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock, cylinder by blank, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The B680 carries Grade 1 with a conventional cylinder, ANSI function E0191, and is BAA compliant, which matters where federal procurement rules apply.
20) The B680 backset is fixed at 2-3/4 inch - what deadbolt handles a bore that is 2-3/8 inch or unknown?
The B680 uses a fixed 2-3/4 inch backset, which strengthens the lock against tampering, and Schlage lists adjustable and other fixed backset options in the B600 line. If the existing bore is 2-3/8 inch or has not been measured, the Brinks Raleigh Series and the Brinks Mendocino Series both use a 4-way adjustable backset, and the Cal-Royal ED500 and Falcon D111 are supplied with adjustable backsets. The Accentra D111 is fixed at 2-3/8 inch, so it suits a confirmed 2-3/8 inch bore rather than an unknown one.
21) What replaces a Schlage B680 when the opening needs to be controlled by credential instead of a thumbturn?
The B680 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so credential control means a different device. The Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override, the Dormakaba Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart electronic deadbolt, and the Codelocks CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt. For access control tied into the door frame rather than the door, the DynaLock 1300 Series is a heavy duty mortise electric deadbolt. Each of these changes the door prep and the power or credential requirement compared with the B680's 1 inch bore and inside thumbturn.
22) How far does the Schlage B680 stick out from the door face?
The trim ring sits at 7/8 inch deep, which is shallow for a Grade 1 commercial deadbolt, and the collar is broadly angled and free spinning so a wrench or pipe cannot get purchase on it. The shallow projection matters where a door swings tight to a return wall or where a closer arm or panic device shares the face of the door.
23) Does the Schlage B680 have a handing, and do I need to specify one?
No handing to specify. A deadbolt throws straight across with no bevel and no latch to reverse, so the same B680 works on a left or right hand door and on either swing. The only choices you make on the order are finish (eleven of them) and, if your bore is not at 2-3/4 inches, the backset option.
