1) Will the Schlage L480 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes, 1-3/4 inches is the door thickness the L480 is built for, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The mortise pocket has to accept a case measuring 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches. If your doors are a nonstandard thickness, this is not the body to spec.
2) Is the Schlage L480 a full lock or just a deadbolt? Can people still get through the door without a handle?
Deadbolt only, no latch. The bolt is thrown by a thumbturn on one side and there is no trim at all on the opposite side, so nothing holds the door closed once the bolt is retracted. Use it where the door does not need to latch (restrooms, small utility doors) or as an auxiliary bolt above an existing lock. If you need the door to stay shut on its own, you want a latching mortise lock instead.
3) What strike and door prep does the Schlage L480 need?
It ships with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, cut for ANSI 115.5 frame prep. If your frames are already prepped to ANSI 115.5 (standard on commercial hollow metal), the strike drops in. Round corner frames will need the strike lip radius matched.
4) What cylinder and keyway does the L480 come with, and can I key it into my existing system?
A conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway is standard. Ordering is single cylinder, key outside and thumbturn inside. You choose keyed different (standard) or keyed alike if several bolts should share one key, and there is a free-text field on the order for a specific keyway, masterkeying, or a key bitting to match an existing system. If you core your own, order it with no cylinder using the less-cylinder option.
5) Is the Schlage L480 deadbolt Grade 1?
Grade 1, and the L400 family is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. It is a heavy duty commercial bolt, not a residential one, so it holds up on doors that get hit all day in schools, healthcare and multi-family common areas.
6) Does the L480 door bolt need to be ordered handed?
No handing to specify. The L480 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand doors, and inswing or outswing. That also means you can stock a single item across a building.
7) How well does the L480 bolt resist attack on an exterior or storage door?
The deadbolt carries an anti-saw pin inside the bolt to stop a blade cutting through it, and the lock case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. Because there is no lever or knob on the L480, there is no trim to pull off and no hub to attack. It is a common choice as an auxiliary bolt above a primary lock where security matters more than convenience.
8) Should I use a small case mortise bolt like the L480 or a full mortise lock on a restroom or utility door?
Pick by whether the door has to latch. The L400 small case bolts are meant to be the primary lock where no latching is required, which covers restrooms and small doors into utility spaces. If the door needs to stay closed against a stop, catch on a latchbolt, or take a lever for egress, step up to a full L9000 mortise lock body instead. The L480 also works as a second, auxiliary bolt on a door that already has a latching lock.
9) Can the L480 be ordered as an electrified or access-controlled bolt?
No. The L480 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. Electrified options with 12V/24V auto detect, selectable EL/EU, request-to-exit and door position switches live in the L Series electrified lock bodies, not in the L400 small case bolts.
10) Does the Schlage L480 meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
The L Series meets the Buy American Act, and the line also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which matters if you are specifying into a Florida project. For the specific fire label on any given function, read the label on the latch front of the product you receive.
11) What finishes does the Schlage L480 mortise bolt come in?
Twelve BHMA finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze.
