Schlage L462P626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L462 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The L462 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only, which is the standard commercial door thickness. On a 1-3/8 inch door, the older residential-interior thickness, it is the wrong part. The mortise pocket also has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, so the door has to be prepped for a mortise lock, not a bored cylindrical one.
2) Do I have to order the Schlage L462 handed for a left or right door?
No handing to specify. The L462 is non-handed, so one lock covers left hand, right hand, and reverse bevel openings. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means one part number on the shelf regardless of which way the door swings.
3) What backset does the Schlage L462 mortise lock use, and will it hit my existing prep?
2-3/4 inches, measured from the door edge to the cylinder centerline. That is the standard mortise backset, so it lines up with an existing ANSI mortise pocket cut for a Schlage L Series lock. The case body itself is 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches. If the door is prepped for a bored deadbolt rather than a mortise pocket, this is not a drop-in and the door needs machining.
4) What strike comes with the Schlage L462 and what frame prep does it need?
It ships with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with a box, cut to ANSI 115.5 frame prep. If your hollow metal frames are already prepped to ANSI 115.5 with a square corner cutout, the strike drops straight in. Radius corner frames will need the opening dressed or a different strike.
5) Does the Schlage L462 come with cylinders, or do I order them separately?
Depends which option you pick. The P option includes conventional 6-pin cylinders in the C keyway. The L option is less conventional cylinder, meaning the lock arrives without cylinders so you can fit your own interchangeable core or house keyway. Since this is a double cylinder function, an L order needs two cylinders, not one. The standard cylinder spec on the lock is a conventional 6-pin, S123 keyway.
6) Does the Schlage L462 meet Grade 1 for a commercial spec?
Grade 1, and the L400 locks are tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. The ANSI/BHMA function designation is E06061. It is a commercial, heavy duty lock, which is the level a spec writer is normally looking for on institutional and multi-family work.
7) Can I get several Schlage L462 deadbolts keyed alike on one key?
Yes. Keying is a required selection at order: keyed different (the standard), keyed alike for a group of locks on one key, or none if you are taking the less-cylinder route and pinning your own. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where you put a master key system or a specific keyway request.
8) Is a mortise deadbolt like the L462 the right choice, or should I use a full mortise lockset?
The L400 family is for openings where no latching is needed, restrooms and small utility doors being the usual cases, and as an auxiliary deadbolt alongside other hardware. It holds the door with a bolt only, so it will not keep an unlatched door closed. If the door needs to latch shut and be operated by lever, you want an L9000 mortise lockset instead. Where you already have a lever lock and just want more security, the L462 is the add-on.
9) Is the Schlage L462 deadbolt resistant to being sawn or picked?
The deadbolt functions carry an anti-saw pin inside the bolt to stop a blade cutting through it, and a security blocking hub that defeats picking by pulling the levers. A UL437 listed cylinder is optional if you want attack-rated key control, ordered as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
10) What finishes does the Schlage L462 come in, and will they match the other L Series hardware in my building?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so 626 here matches 626 on your other Schlage L Series trim. Every finish is available with either cylinder option.
11) Does the Schlage L462 qualify for a Buy American Act job?
The L Series meets BAA, Buy American Act requirements, which is what government, education, and federally funded institutional work usually asks for on the submittal.
12) Is the Schlage L462 an electronic or access control lock?
Purely mechanical. The L462 is key operated on both sides with no electrified option on this configuration, so there is no wiring, no power transfer hinge, and nothing to fail when the building loses power. Electrified L Series options exist elsewhere in the family, but this is not one of them.
13) What is the Schlage L462 lock case made of?
Cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. That plating is a corrosion coating on the concealed case body, so it holds up in a damp mortise pocket, a restroom wall, or a utility room. It is not the visible finish, which is set by the finish code you order.
