1) What strike comes with the Schlage L496 mortise deadbolt, and what frame prep does it need?
It ships with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 by 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, cut to ANSI 115.5 frame prep. If your frame is already prepped to ANSI 115.5 for a mortise lock, the strike drops in. Round corner frames will need the strike corners addressed or a matching radius strike.
2) How does the OCCUPIED indicator on the Schlage L496 actually work?
The deadbolt is thrown by key from one side or by thumbturn from the other. When the bolt is projected, the indicator displays "OCCUPIED". Retract the bolt and the message clears. There is no latchbolt in this lock, so it is the bolt position itself driving the display, which is why the indicator cannot go out of sync with the actual locked state.
3) Can I use the Schlage L496 as the only lock on a single-occupancy restroom door?
Yes, that is the intended use. The L400 series is made to serve as the primary lock where no latching is required, such as restrooms and small utility doors. Because there is no latchbolt, the door needs something else to hold it closed when unlocked, usually a closer plus a push/pull or a ball catch. If you want the door to latch as well as indicate, look at a full lockset instead.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering the Schlage L496 - cylinder and keying?
Two choices. Cylinder: P gets you a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway; L is less conventional cylinder, for when you are supplying your own or fitting an interchangeable core. Then keying: keyed different is standard, keyed alike is available when you want one key across several locks, or select none if you went less cylinder. The catalogued standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway. Finish is the third pick, 11 of them from 605 bright brass through 630 satin stainless and 622 matte black.
5) Is the Schlage L496 Grade 1, and what standard is it certified to?
Grade 1, heavy duty, commercial. The L400 series is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1, which is the auxiliary lock standard rather than the A156.13 mortise lock standard that covers the L9000 locksets.
6) Can I key the Schlage L496 into the Schlage master key system already in my building?
Yes. The P option is a conventional 6-pin Schlage cylinder in the C keyway, which is the everyday Schlage keyway most buildings are already keyed in. If your system uses a restricted or proprietary keyway, order the L version less cylinder and drop your own cylinder in. Keyed alike is available if you want a run of these on one key.
7) I have a bored (cylindrical) door prep, not a mortise pocket. Can I still get an occupancy indicator deadbolt?
Not with the L496, which is a mortise lock and needs a mortise pocket cut in the door edge. For a bored prep, the Accentra D292 is a cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator function, Grade 2, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is another thumbturn x indicator deadbolt option. Cutting a mortise pocket into a door already bored for a cylindrical lock is generally not worth it.
8) Is there a Grade 1 indicator lock that latches the door, since the L496 is deadbolt only?
The Schlage L496 is a deadbolt function lock with no latch, so the door needs separate latching hardware or a push/pull. If you want one Grade 1 lock that both latches and indicates, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock with indicator, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 in to 2 in thick. The Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is also a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator.
9) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L496 indicator deadbolt if the door is not prepped for a mortise case?
The L496 is a mortise deadbolt with an OCCUPIED indicator, keyed on one side and thumbturn on the other, in a 4-7/16 in x 3-5/8 in x 1 in case at 2-3/4 in backset. If the door has a cylindrical bore instead of a mortise pocket, the Accentra D292 is a cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator function, Grade 2, for doors 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in thick. Note the D292 is thumbturn x indicator, so it does not give you the key side the L496 has.
10) Which indicator deadbolt should I use on a restroom door that does not need a key override?
The Schlage L496 is a keyed lock, with the deadbolt actuated by key or thumbturn. Where no key side is wanted, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator on the outside and no key, for doors 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in thick, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 one-sided deadbolt with occupancy indicator operated by an inside thumbturn.
11) For a public restroom that needs both a latch and staff key access with occupancy indication, what should I look at instead of the L496?
The L496 covers the deadbolt and indicator only, with key or thumbturn operation and no latching. The Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt in a storeroom/public restroom function, so latching and the keyed bolt come as one assembly.
12) What is the difference between the Schlage L496 and a non-keyed indicator deadbolt like the Arrow E50?
The L496 takes a key on one side, so staff or maintenance can unlock the door from outside without breaking anything. The Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with vacant/occupied indicator on the outside and no key, thumbturn only, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. If you need outside key access on a restroom or a single-occupancy room, the L496 is the one. If you only need the occupant to lock and show status, the non-keyed unit covers it.
13) What keeps someone from cutting or picking the Schlage L496 open?
The deadbolt carries an anti-saw pin to stop cut-through attacks on the bolt. The lock body is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. For upgraded key control, the Primus 20-500 Series cylinder is a UL437 listed option you can specify instead of the standard conventional cylinder.
14) Is the Schlage L496 suitable for a fire rated restroom door?
Fire door use should be settled by the opening's listing. 15) We need indicator deadbolts across a whole facility. Does the Schlage L496 hold up better than the Grade 2 options?
For heavy traffic, the L496 is the heavier choice: Grade 1, heavy duty, mortise, with a steel case. Most of the indicator deadbolts on the market sit a grade below, the Hager 3216 thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with 1 inch throw and the Falcon D271 with occupancy indicator are both Grade 2, and the Falcon is rated medium duty. On restrooms in a school, stadium or airport, the mortise Grade 1 is the one that survives; on low-traffic office restrooms a Grade 2 is usually enough.
16) Does the Schlage L496 meet Buy American Act requirements for a government job?
The L Series meets BAA (Buy American Act). The line also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which matters if you are specifying into a Florida HVHZ project.

19) Do the Emtek 8383 and 8583 thumbturn privacy bolts substitute for a Schlage L496?
They are not interchangeable. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire and 8583 Square are privacy function thumbturn bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended for use with a brass passage set. The L496 is a keyed mortise deadbolt with an OCCUPIED indicator in a commercial, heavy duty, Grade 1 build with a conventional 6-pin S123 keyway cylinder. If the opening needs key control from the outside, the Emtek bolts will not provide it.
