Schlage L9464P 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a Schlage L9464 mortise deadbolt go on a fire rated door?
The L Series carries a UL listing for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listing for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you confirm a given lock is the listed version. Fire door assemblies also need positive latching, which a deadbolt alone does not provide, so a deadbolt is normally an addition to a latching lock on that opening rather than the only hardware on it.
2) Does the L9464 have a lever or knob, or is it deadbolt only?
Deadbolt only. The L9464 throws its bolt by key and there is no latchbolt and no lever or knob to retract anything. Nobody passes through this door without a key, so it is not a door people come and go through. If you need a deadbolt plus a latch that a lever operates, you want a different L Series function, not this one.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage L9464 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The L9464 is non-handed, so the same lock goes into a left or right hand opening. That is one less thing to get wrong on a multi-door order, and it means a spare on the shelf covers any door in the building.
4) What strike do I need to prep the frame for a Schlage L9464 mortise deadbolt?
It ships with the 10-073 deadbolt strike: a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner strike with a box, no lip. A deadbolt strike has no lip because there is no latch to ride over it. If your existing frame is prepped for an ANSI curved-lip latch strike, that cutout will not match, and the frame needs the deadbolt prep instead.
5) What is the difference between the P and L cylinder options on the Schlage L9464?
P gets you the lock with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. L is less cylinder, meaning the lock body and trim ship without one so you can fit your own, which is what a locksmith does when the building runs a restricted or proprietary keyway and every cylinder has to come off the master system. Both cylinder options come in all twelve finishes, from 605 bright brass through 630 satin stainless and 622 matte black.
6) Can I get several Schlage L9464 deadbolts keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. Keying is chosen at order: keyed different is standard, keyed alike groups multiple locks to one key, and there is a none option that pairs with the less cylinder configuration. If the building runs a specific keyway or master system, put that in the special cylinder and keying field on the order rather than taking the stock S123 keyway.
7) Is the L9464 a single cylinder or double cylinder mortise deadbolt?
Single cylinder. The bolt is worked by key from one side and there is no trim at all on the opposite face, so there is no thumbturn or second key on the inside. Where the door is an egress route or a fire exit, a bolt with no inside release is usually not permitted, so check that before specifying it. If you need key operation from both faces on a mortise deadbolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on the same 2-3/4 inch backset.
8) Is the Schlage L9464 ANSI Grade 1, and what function code is it?
Grade 1, and the function is F18 under ANSI/BHMA. The L9000 family is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for Grade 1 security and operational. Note that ordering it with interchangeable core cylinders drops it to Grade 2 security, while a concealed shell cylinder keeps A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security. If a spec sheet calls for F18 Grade 1, that is what this is.
9) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage L9464 mortise deadbolt?
The Sargent 4874 is the nearest peer to the Schlage L9464. Both are mortise deadbolts on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt in the 4870 Series. The L9464 is keyed on a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway and carries a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 3-5/8 by 1 inch mortise case. If the opening is prepped for a Schlage L Series pocket, confirm the case dimensions before swapping, since the two brands use their own case footprints.
10) What should I use instead of a Schlage L9464 if the door needs a latch and lever as well as a deadbolt?
The L9464 is a deadbolt only, actuated by key with no trim on the opposite side, so it does not retract a latch. For an opening that needs both a latchbolt and a deadbolt in one mortise case, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt on a 1-3/4 inch door, which matches the L9464 door thickness.
11) Which mortise lock should I use if the door is thinner than the 1-3/4 inch the Schlage L9464 covers?
The Schlage L9464 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner stock, the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body covers 1-3/8 inch and over on a 2-1/2 inch backset, offered knob by knob, with the 6310190RRLS as the right hand reverse lever by lever version. For ornamental iron on 1 inch stock, the Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder mortise locks with a round knob rated at 1 inch door thickness.
12) Will the trim on a Schlage L9464 match the other L Series locks and Von Duprin exit devices in my building?
It will. The L9464 uses sectional trim from the L9000 family, offered here in twelve finishes including 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless, the two that dominate commercial work. Schlage states that all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a building already standardized on that ecosystem stays consistent.
13) How is the Schlage L9464 protected against someone sawing or picking the bolt?
The deadbolt carries an anti-saw pin inside the bolt to stop cut-through, and the lock uses a security blocking hub so removing the levers does not give access to pick the mechanism. Body material is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. If you want a high security cylinder in it, the L Series accepts a UL437 listed Primus 20-500 Series cylinder as an option.
14) I need a keyed mortise lock for a stockroom door people actually walk through, not a deadbolt. What should I look at instead?
A deadbolt-only lock like the L9464 has no latch and no lever, so a door with traffic needs a storeroom or entrance function lockset. Options ZenSupply carries on 1-3/4 inch doors include the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option, the Cal-Royal NM8050 Grade 1 office and entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, and the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with Arcadia lever.
15) Is there a keypad or electronic version if I want to stop issuing keys for this door?
The L9464 is mechanical, key only, with no electronics in it. If the requirement is credential access on a mortise prep, ZenSupply carries the Alarm Lock DL4500 Series Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes, and for card and mobile credentials the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW, a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED. The DL4500 fits 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, so confirm your door falls in that band before swapping.
16) Is the Schlage L9464 heavy enough for a school or hospital corridor door?
It is a commercial heavy duty lock, Grade 1, built on the L9000 mortise case that Schlage rates for daily institutional use. Grade 1 is the highest ANSI/BHMA durability tier and is what specs for schools, hospitals and government facilities normally call out. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federally funded work.
17) Is a Sargent 130KB mortise thumbturn a substitute for a Schlage L9464?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series, and the Sargent 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series. Both are trim pieces that turn a bolt from the inside, not lock bodies. The Schlage L9464 is a complete heavy duty mortise lock whose deadbolt is thrown by key with no trim opposite side, supplied with a 10-073 deadbolt strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner with box and no lip.
18) What Grade 1 mortise lock works for a classroom door where the Schlage L9464 deadbolt is not the right function?
The L9464 is a keyed deadbolt with no trim on the opposite side, which does not provide classroom control. For a classroom opening, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also 1-3/4 inch. Both share the L9464 door thickness of 1-3/4 inch and its Grade 1 rating.
19) What is the difference between a Schlage L9464 and a Schlage ENGAGE LEMD mortise deadbolt?
The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile enabled deadbolt with LED, Greenwich trim, right hand, carrying a 3 hour fire rating. The L9464 is a mechanical Grade 1 heavy duty mortise deadbolt, non-handed, keyed on a conventional 6-pin S123 cylinder. The LEMD is handed and credential-read; the L9464 takes no power and no handing call-out at order.
20) Are Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the Schlage L9464?
They are not functional alternatives. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function, meaning they mount for appearance and do not operate a bolt. The Schlage L9464 is a keyed deadbolt whose bolt is actuated by key, built as a Grade 1 commercial mortise lock with an anti-saw pin in the bolt. If the opening has to lock, a dummy set will not serve.
21) I need a Grade 1 mortise storeroom lock rather than the Schlage L9464 deadbolt - what are my options?
The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever in the 8800 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both match the L9464 Grade 1 rating; the L9464 itself is a deadbolt with no trim opposite side and carries a conventional 6-pin S123 keyway cylinder as standard, so if a facility keys to interchangeable cores the NM8080 core option is the relevant difference.
22) For a behavioral health opening, is the Schlage L9464 the right mortise lock or should I look at ligature resistant hardware?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel with passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. Those three are passage function; the L9464 is a keyed deadbolt with no trim opposite side, so it secures rather than passes, and Schlage offers Gold Standard ligature resistant trim for behavioral health applications on the L Series.
23) Can I convert an existing Schlage L9000 mortise lock in my door to the L9464 deadbolt function?
The L9000 universal lock case is designed so ten functions can be created out of a single lock body, and the mortise pocket, 2-3/4 inch backset and 1-3/4 inch door thickness are shared across the family. What changes between functions is the trim and internal parts, and the deadbolt function needs the 10-073 deadbolt strike rather than a latch strike, so the frame prep is the piece most likely to need work. Schlage publishes an L Series Universal Transformation Guide covering which functions convert to which.
24) Does the Schlage L9464 meet ADA and California code for levers?
Schlage states the L Series meets ADA requirements, and that under the California Referenced Standards Code all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply. The L Series also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which is what you need on coastal Florida work.
