Schlage L9460P 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9460 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
The L9460 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial thickness. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches for the mortise pocket, and the backset is 2-3/4 inches. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the L9000 platform offers other door thickness options, but the base configuration is the single 1-3/4 inch thickness.
2) Does the Schlage L9460 have a latch, or is it deadbolt only?
Deadbolt only. The L9460 throws a deadbolt by key from outside or thumbturn from inside, with no latchbolt and no lever or knob. It will not hold a door closed on its own, so it goes on an opening that already has a latching device, or on a door that gets pushed and pulled. If you need a lock that both latches and deadbolts, look at a lockset function instead, such as the Cal-Royal NM8440 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt.
3) Do I have to specify hand when ordering a Schlage L9460 mortise lock?
No handing to specify. The L9460 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and you do not need to know the swing before you order. That also makes it easier to stock one part for a whole building.
4) What strike comes with the Schlage L9460 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
The L9460 ships with the 10-073 deadbolt strike, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner strike with box and no lip. Square corner is the common hollow metal frame prep. If your frame is prepped for a radius corner strike or an ANSI cutout, you will need a different strike face, because a deadbolt strike has no lip to adjust and the bolt has to land square in the box.
5) What cylinder and keyway does the Schlage L9460 come with, and can I get it less cylinder for my own core?
Three cylinder choices: P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, L for less conventional cylinder, and J for full size interchangeable core less core. The standard cylinder for the lock is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway. Locksmiths keying a building to an existing system normally take J or L and supply their own core or cylinder. Keying is specified separately as keyed different or keyed alike, and there is a free text field for special keying requirements, so a master key system can be called out on the order.
6) Is the Schlage L9460 deadbolt approved for a fire rated door?
The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with UL and cUL listing for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you confirm a given lock is the listed version. The exceptions in the family are the L9076 and L9077, which are not covered by that listing.
7) What ANSI grade and function code is the Schlage L9460 mortise deadbolt?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for both security and operational, with the F17 function designation. Two things change that on the order: specifying an interchangeable core cylinder drops it to Grade 2 security, while a concealed shell cylinder holds A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security. For a spec that calls out Grade 1 security explicitly, the cylinder choice matters as much as the lock body.
8) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9460 mortise deadbolt from another manufacturer?
The Schlage L9460 is a mortise deadbolt actuated by key or thumbturn, keyed as a single cylinder. The nearest mortise deadbolt in another line is the Kaba Ilco 185 Series, which is a mortise lock in deadbolt function with no handing. For a mortise deadbolt keyed on both sides instead, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset the L9460 uses.
9) I need a mortise deadbolt keyed on both sides instead of a thumbturn on the inside - what should I order?
The Schlage L9460 is a single cylinder deadbolt, so the inside is a thumbturn. Where a thumbturn is not acceptable on the interior, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with a round knob, both built for 1 inch doors rather than the 1-3/4 inch door the L9460 is prepared for.
10) The opening needs a latch that retracts with the lever as well as a deadbolt - is the L9460 the right lock?
The L9460 is deadbolt function only: the bolt is thrown by key or thumbturn and there is no latching function tied to a lever. For an opening that needs both, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 corridor/dormitory mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. Both combine latching trim with a deadbolt in one case.
11) Behavioral health unit needs a mortise lock - is the L9460 appropriate?
The L9460 is a keyed deadbolt with a projecting thumbturn on the interior. Where ligature resistance governs, the TownSteel MRX-A-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage mortise lockset with satin stainless steel anti-ligature arch trim and the MRX-L-01 is the Grade 1 anti-ligature lever version, both for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 ligature resistant, ADA compliant hospital passage push/pull paddleset in satin stainless steel.
12) Can I put a Schlage L9460 on an aluminum storefront door?
The L9460 is a commercial mortise deadbolt built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 4-7/16 by 3-5/8 by 1 inch case, which is a hollow metal or wood door preparation. Narrow aluminum stile openings take a different family: the Alarm Lock DL1300NW Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock is made for Adams Rite deadlatches, the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is a wide stile electronic pushbutton mortise lock, and the Kaba Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock.
13) Can someone saw or pick their way through a Schlage L9460 deadbolt?
The bolt carries an anti-saw pin to stop cut-through attacks, and the lock body uses a security blocking hub so that removing the levers does not open a path to pick the lock. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. For a higher security cylinder on a key control job, a UL437 listed cylinder is available by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
14) Can I key all the L9460 deadbolts in my building alike?
Yes. Keying is a required selection on the order: keyed different is the standard, keyed alike is there for a run of locks that should all take one key, and there is a none option when you are ordering the less-cylinder or less-core versions and keying your own. Because the lock is single cylinder, a key works the outside and a thumbturn works the inside, so tenants and staff are not carrying a key to get out.
15) How does the Schlage L9460 compare to a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt?
Both are mortise deadbolts on a 2-3/4 inch backset, but the function differs. The L9460 is single cylinder, key outside and thumbturn inside. The Sargent 4874 from the 4870 Series is a double cylinder deadbolt, meaning a key is needed from both sides. Double cylinder is used where there is glass next to the door and you do not want a thumbturn reachable, though many egress codes restrict it on occupied spaces. If you need key-both-sides, the 4874 is the one; for anything with people behind it, the thumbturn side of the L9460 is what keeps the opening compliant.
16) I want a keypad or credential deadbolt instead of a key. What are my options in a mortise lock?
The L9460 is a purely mechanical lock with no electronics, so it cannot be operated by a code or a card. For a mortise deadbolt with a keypad, the Alarm Lock DL4500 Series is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and privacy keypad, fitting 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. For credential and mobile access on a deadbolt function, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt, rated 3 hours fire. Note the DL4500 door thickness range differs from the L9460's 1-3/4 inch, so check the leaf before swapping.
17) Will a Schlage L9460 work alongside our existing Von Duprin exit devices and other L Series hardware?
The L Series is built to suite across the line: all levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, and the platform suites across electronic, tubular, exit trim and multi-point locks. For a facility standardizing on one look across corridors, stair doors and offices, that means a deadbolt on one opening and an exit device on the next can carry matching trim and finish.
18) Does the Schlage L9460 meet Buy American and ADA requirements for a government or institutional job?
Both are covered. The L Series meets the Buy American Act and meets ADA requirements, and carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings for hurricane zone work. It also holds ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 forced entry and is UL listed. On California jobs, all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code.
19) I need a mortise lock with a lever, not a deadbolt only. What should I order instead?
The L9460 has sectional trim with a cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside, no lever. For a Grade 1 mortise lockset with a lever on a 1-3/4 inch door, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset, and Cal-Royal offers the NM8050 office/entrance, NM8070 classroom and NM8080 storeroom, all Grade 1 heavy duty on 1-3/4 inch doors. Within Schlage's own L9000 line there are 55 plus standard functions with 33 lever, two knob, five rose and three escutcheon designs, so the same series will cover a levered function if you want to keep one manufacturer across the building.
20) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for a Schlage L9460?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard mortise thumbturn, a trim piece from the 8200 Series, as is the Sargent 130W thumbturn with a round backplate from the 7800 Series. The L9460 is a complete mortise lock with a 4-7/16 by 3-5/8 by 1 inch case and a 10-073 deadbolt strike, so a thumbturn alone does not replace it. A thumbturn is what mounts on the inside of a lock like this, not the lock itself.
21) What Grade 1 mortise locks work alongside a Schlage L9460 on the rest of a building?
The L9460 is Grade 1 with an ANSI/BHMA F17 function designation, non-handed, heavy duty. Openings on the same job that need other functions can be filled by the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock, the Cal-Royal NM8050 Grade 1 office/entrance and NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom locksets for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 classroom lockset, and the Falcon MA101 Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating.
22) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the Schlage L9460?
No. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function, meaning they do not operate a bolt at all. The L9460 is a keyed Grade 1 heavy duty deadbolt that throws a bolt by key or thumbturn. The Emtek units are for an inactive leaf or a decorative match, not for securing an opening.
23) What mortise lock should a classroom get if the L9460 deadbolt is not the right function?
The L9460 is deadbolt function only. Classroom openings are served by the Cal-Royal NM8070 Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 classroom lockset, the Marks USA LA318GJ classroom security indicator mortise lockset with ANSI strike and steel escutcheon, and the TownSteel FME-2000 Grade 1 heavy duty classroom lockset with RFID, all built for a 1-3/4 inch door like the L9460.
24) Is a BEST 45H mortise lock body a drop-in for a Schlage L9460?
They are different functions. The BEST 45H is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function and the 45HCA is a heavy duty lockbody with intruder function, both lever-operated latching bodies. The L9460 is a deadbolt-only case, 4-7/16 by 3-5/8 by 1 inch, with a 10-073 deadbolt strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner with box and no lip. Swapping between them changes the strike prep as well as the lock case.
25) Which mortise lock supports access control wiring if the L9460 does not?
The L9460 is a mechanical, non-electronic deadbolt. For an electrified mortise case, the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation, and the Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in storeroom function with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC. Both take power at the door; the L9460 does not.
26) We use interchangeable cores across the property - which mortise locks accept them?
The Schlage L9460 can be ordered with a J FSIC less core cylinder prep, alongside the L less conventional cylinder and P conventional 6-pin C keyway options. On the same job, the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset is offered with an interchangeable core option, and the BEST 45HZ EZ Series electronic keypad mortise lock carries a key override function.
27) The door only needs latching with no locking - is there a simpler option than the L9460?
Yes. The L9460 is a keyed deadbolt. Where the opening only needs to latch, the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose and a 2-3/4 inch backset and the 3810E is the escutcheon version, both covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, and the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation. For a non-keyed office function, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
28) Is the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock a替 replacement for the L9460?
The Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock is privacy function with a keypad reader, Grade 1 heavy duty for a 1-3/4 inch door. The L9460 is a keyed single cylinder deadbolt, also Grade 1 heavy duty for a 1-3/4 inch door. They share the door prep thickness and grade but not the function: privacy locks the door from the inside for occupancy, while the L9460 secures it with a key from outside and a thumbturn inside.
29) Will Schlage L9460 deadbolts match the finish on the rest of my door hardware?
Eleven finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless and 630 satin stainless. Each of those is available with any of the three cylinder options. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the usual choices on commercial openings, so matching an existing building standard is normally straightforward.
30) Is the Schlage L9460 heavy duty enough for a high traffic commercial building?
Rated heavy duty and built for commercial use, exceeding ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards. The cold rolled steel case with zinc dichromate plating is the same lock body platform Schlage uses across the L9000 line, where a universal lock case supports 10 functions from a single body. For apartment entries, stair doors and back-of-house openings that see constant use, this is the duty class specified.
