Schlage L464L 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the L464 deadbolt drop into an existing ANSI strike prep in my frame?
It ships with the Schlage 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, cut to ANSI 115.5 frame prep. If your frames were prepped to ANSI 115.5, which most commercial hollow metal is, the strike lands in the existing cutout and you are only swapping the lock. Round corner frames or a non-standard prep will need the frame worked or a different strike.
2) Should I use a mortise deadbolt or a full mortise lockset on a restroom or utility door?
A deadbolt-only mortise lock like the L464 is the right call where nothing has to latch, restrooms, closets, mechanical and storage rooms, doors that just need to be held shut and locked. There is no lever, no latchbolt, no roller. If people are passing through the door all day and it needs to latch on close, you want a full mortise lockset with a latch and lever trim instead. The L464 also works as an auxiliary bolt above an existing lockset when the primary lock isn't secure enough on its own.
3) Can I order the Schlage L464 without a cylinder so I can use my own keyway?
Yes. The L464 comes two ways: option P supplies a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, and option L is less conventional cylinder, meaning the lock arrives with no cylinder so you can fit one from the keying system already running in the building. Locksmiths and integrators keying into a restricted or proprietary keyway should take the L option. If the door is standalone and you have no existing system, P is the simpler order.
4) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage L464 mortise deadbolt?
No handing to figure out. The L464 is non-handed, so the same lock goes into a left or right hand door, inswing or outswing. That matters if you are buying several for a building and don't want to survey every opening first, or if you are stocking one part for a service truck.
5) Is the Schlage L464 deadbolt heavy duty enough for a commercial building?
It is a Grade 1, heavy duty commercial lock, carrying ANSI/BHMA function code E06081. Grade 1 is the top of the three ANSI/BHMA grades and the tier normally specified for institutional and high traffic commercial work, so it holds up on doors that see constant use rather than a residential duty cycle.
6) What finishes can I get the Schlage L464 mortise deadbolt in to match the other doors in my building?
Twelve finishes across the L464: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. For matching an existing fleet of openings, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two you will most often find already on commercial doors. Every finish is offered both with the conventional cylinder and less cylinder.
7) Is the Schlage L464 an electric or access control lock?
No, the L464 is purely mechanical, key operated with no wiring, no power and no monitoring. If the opening needs to release from a card reader or an access control panel, or you need request-to-exit or door position feedback, this is the wrong part and you want an electrified mortise lock instead.
8) Will a Schlage L464 hold up on an exterior or damp door like a mechanical room?
The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, a sacrificial corrosion coating on the internals, so the working parts are protected in humid mechanical spaces, parking structures and similar conditions. That is the lock body itself; the exposed finish is whatever you select on the order.
