Schlage L464B 626 OS-DND-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage L464B mortise deadbolt come with a core, and what cylinder prep does it use?
The L464B ships prepped for a 7-pin small format interchangeable core but without the core itself, so you supply and key the SFIC separately. The L400 Series standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway, so if you are standardizing on SFIC you need to order the core to match your existing system. Keying is selected on the order: keyed different, keyed alike across multiple locks, or no cylinder at all for less-cylinder builds.
2) Will a Schlage L464 mortise deadbolt fit my door and existing mortise pocket?
It is built for 1-3/4 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset, with a small mortise case measuring 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inch and a 5-9/16 x 1-1/4 inch face. That is a small-case deadbolt pocket, not a full L9000 lock body pocket, so a door already routed for a standard mortise lockset will need the correct L400 prep. The lock is non-handed, so there is no left or right hand to specify.
3) What strike do I need, and will it drop into a standard ANSI frame prep?
The standard strike is the Schlage 10-079, a 1-1/8 by 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, cut to ANSI 115.5 frame prep. If your frames are already ANSI 115.5 prepped, the strike lands in the existing cutout. Radius corner frames need the matching radius strike instead of the square corner one.
4) What does the exterior indicator on the Schlage L464B actually display?
Four exterior indicator legends are offered: DO NOT DISTURB, UNLOCKED/LOCKED, VACANT/OCCUPIED, and a symbols-only version with no text. The symbols-only option is the usual pick for multi-language buildings or where signage rules limit wording. The indicator reads at 180 degrees, so it is visible walking down a corridor rather than only head-on.
5) Is a mortise indicator deadbolt the right choice for a single-occupancy restroom, or should I use a cylindrical one?
L400 Series locks are meant to be the primary lock where no latching is needed, which is exactly the single-occupancy restroom or small utility door case, and they also work as an auxiliary deadbolt alongside a latching lockset. They require a mortise pocket. If the door is bored for a cylindrical lock and you do not want to mortise it, a cylindrical indicator deadbolt such as the Accentra D292 or the Hager 3216 is the alternative, though both are Grade 2 rather than Grade 1.
6) Is the Schlage L464 Grade 1, and what standard is that tested to?
Grade 1, heavy duty, with L400 Series locks tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. The ANSI function designation on this one is E06071. Note that with interchangeable core cylinders the Schlage L Series is rated Grade 2 for security, which matters if a spec calls for Grade 1 security with the cylinder installed.
7) What indicator deadbolt works on a door prepped for a bored cylindrical deadbolt instead of a mortise pocket?
The Schlage L464B is a mortise deadbolt, so the door must have a mortise pocket cut for a 4-7/16 inch x 3-5/8 inch x 1 inch case. For a bored door, the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator function for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
8) Is there a Grade 1 indicator alternative if the opening needs a latching lever rather than a deadbolt only?
The Schlage L464B is a deadbolt function actuated by key or thumbturn, with no latchbolt. Where the door needs a latching lever with status indication, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy/bedroom/bathroom visual status lever lock with indicator for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors and carries a fire rating, and the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator.
9) What non-keyed indicator deadbolt can I use on a restroom where a key cylinder is not wanted?
The Schlage L464B is keyed, with a single cylinder and standard S123 keyway conventional 6-pin cylinder. For a restroom that should not be key operated from outside, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside and is non-keyed, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 one-sided deadbolt with occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside.
10) How is the L464 deadbolt operated from each side?
Key outside, thumbturn inside. It is a single cylinder deadbolt, so the key retracts and projects the bolt from the keyed face while the occupant uses the turn on the other side. The deadbolt carries an anti-saw pin to stop cut-through attacks on the bolt.
11) Which finishes does the Schlage L464B indicator deadbolt come in, and will it match the rest of my openings?
Three finishes: 619 satin nickel, 626 satin chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel. All four indicator legends are offered in each of the three. 626 is the usual match for commercial buildings already running satin chrome Schlage trim, and 630 for stainless environments like healthcare and food service.
12) Can I get an indicator deadbolt on a fire rated opening, and what if I need it on a lever lock instead?
Schlage L Series products are UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs to 8 by 10 feet, with the letter F and UL symbol on the latch front marking the listing. If you would rather have the status indicator built into a lever lockset rather than a separate deadbolt, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy lever with a visual status indicator and a stated fire rating, sized for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
13) What is a cheaper alternative to the Schlage L464B for a low-traffic restroom door?
If the opening does not justify a Grade 1 mortise deadbolt, the Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with thumbturn by indicator function, and the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Both give the occupancy read; neither is keyed the way the L464B is, so staff override by key is lost on the Arrow.
14) What is the difference between the Schlage L464B and the Falcon H2171 for a public restroom?
The Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt in a storeroom/public restroom function, so it provides latching and deadbolt in one assembly. The Schlage L464B is a Grade 1 mortise deadbolt only, intended where no latching is required, and it is also used as an auxiliary lock alongside other hardware.
15) Can Emtek indicator privacy bolts be used in place of the Schlage L464B on a commercial door?
No. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, designed to be used with a brass passage set. The Schlage L464B is a commercial heavy duty Grade 1 keyed mortise deadbolt with an exterior indicator and a 10-079 square corner strike to ANSI 115.5 prep, so the two are not interchangeable in a commercial opening.
16) Is the Schlage L464B an electrified lock, and will it match my Von Duprin exit devices?
It is a mechanical lock with no electrical option. Across the L Series, levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so the trim aesthetic carries across the building even though this particular part is a deadbolt rather than a lever set.
17) What is the Schlage L464B lock case made of?
Cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating on the case, which is the corrosion-resistant finish used on the concealed parts inside the door. The visible face and trim carry the ordered finish, 619, 626 or 630.
18) Does the Schlage L464 meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
Schlage L Series locks meet the Buy American Act, and the line also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings if the project is in a high velocity hurricane zone. This is a commercial-duty product, not a residential one.
