Schlage L464P 626 OS-SYM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L464P mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly what the L464P is built for. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches and the backset is 2-3/4 inches, which is the standard commercial mortise prep. The small lock case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, so the door pocket has to accept that case. It is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand openings.
2) Does the L464P come with a cylinder, and what keying do I have to specify?
The L464P is ordered cylinder only, with the cylinder itself being a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway as standard. Keying has to be chosen: keyed different (the default), keyed alike if you want a run of locks on one key, or none if you are going less cylinder and supplying your own core. Special keyway or keying instructions can be submitted as a note with the order.
3) Will the L464P work with my existing ANSI strike prep in the frame?
Yes. It ships with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 by 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, cut to ANSI 115.5 prep. If your frames are already prepped to ANSI 115.5 with a square corner strike, the deadbolt drops into that prep without frame work.
4) What do the OS indicator options on the Schlage L464P actually say on the door?
Three exterior indicator faces are offered: OS-DND reads DO NOT DISTURB, OS-LOC reads UNLOCKED/LOCKED, and OS-SYM uses symbols only with no text. Pick DND for hotel and patient rooms, LOC for restrooms and offices where staff need plain English status, and SYM where you want language-neutral signage. Each is available in 619 satin nickel, 626 satin chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel.
5) Is this a latching lock, or do I still need a latch on the door?
Deadbolt only, actuated by key or thumbturn. There is no latchbolt, so the door will not stay closed on its own. Schlage's L400 Series is meant for openings where no latching is required, such as restrooms and small utility doors, or as an auxiliary bolt above a separate latching lockset. If you need one device that latches and locks, use a mortise lockset instead.
6) I need an indicator deadbolt but my doors aren't prepped for a mortise case. What else is there?
If the door has a standard bored deadbolt prep rather than a mortise pocket, a cylindrical indicator deadbolt is the way to go. The Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator that covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L464P needs a mortise pocket, so it is not a substitute on a bored door.
7) Is there a Grade 1 indicator lock that also latches the door, rather than just a deadbolt?
The Schlage L464 is deadbolt only, intended where no latching is required. For a latching Grade 1 indicator lock, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is an extra heavy duty privacy/bedroom/bathroom visual status lever lock with indicator, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Accentra AUYPL02 is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator. For a restroom opening needing both a latch and a deadbolt, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected public restroom lock with occupancy indicator and single cylinder deadbolt.
8) Which indicator deadbolt should I use if the restroom door must not be key operated from outside?
The Schlage L464 is a keyed single cylinder deadbolt, actuated by key or thumbturn. If the opening calls for no outside key, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator on the outside for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 one-sided deadbolt with occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside.
9) Which indicator deadbolt fits a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The Schlage L464 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. For thicker doors with an indicator, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL visual status lever lock covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors and is Grade 1 with a fire rating, though it is a latching privacy lever lock rather than a deadbolt.
10) Is the Schlage L464P Grade 1, and is that certification specific to the L400 deadbolts?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and the L400 family is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. The listed ANSI function designation is E06071. Case material is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. The bolt includes an anti-saw pin to resist cut-through.
11) What is the difference between a keyed indicator deadbolt like this and a non-keyed privacy indicator?
The L464P is keyed, single cylinder, so staff or maintenance can override the bolt from outside with a key while the occupant throws it by thumbturn. Non-keyed alternatives have no outside override: the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside and no key, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. For single-occupancy restrooms where you accept no key override, those are simpler. For patient rooms, dorms, or anywhere staff must get in, keyed is the correct choice.
12) Can I standardize the L464P across a building and key it with my other Schlage locks?
Yes, within limits you set at order time. Keyed alike is an option when multiple locks need to run on one key, and the standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway, so it sits in a conventional Schlage key system rather than a small format interchangeable core system unless you order it less cylinder and drop in your own core. Any non-standard keyway or master key requirement should be stated in the special cylinder/keying field.
13) Is this deadbolt suitable for a hotel guest room or patient room door?
It fits that application well. The DO NOT DISTURB exterior indicator (OS-DND) is the option hospitality and healthcare specify, the bolt is thrown by thumbturn from inside for the occupant, and the outside cylinder gives housekeeping or clinical staff key override. It is a commercial, heavy duty, Grade 1 device rather than a residential bolt.
14) What is a lighter duty indicator deadbolt than the Schlage L464?
The Schlage L464 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise deadbolt. Where a lighter duty rating is acceptable, the Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with thumbturn by indicator function, and the Falcon D271 is a medium duty Grade 2 deadbolt with occupancy indicator.
15) Can an Emtek 8383 privacy bolt substitute for a Schlage L464 indicator deadbolt?
No. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire thumbturn privacy bolt is a privacy function bolt with double rosettes and indicator, intended to be used with a brass passage set. The Schlage L464 is a commercial Grade 1 keyed mortise deadbolt with single cylinder keyed function and a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Emtek 8483 Watford, 8583 Square, and 8683 Disk are the same privacy bolt in different rosette designs, not keyed commercial deadbolts.
16) Is there an indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn as an alternative to the Schlage L464?
Yes. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 series is an indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn and a thumbturn by indicator function. The Schlage L464 is a non-handed mortise deadbolt operated by key or thumbturn with a 4-7/16 inch by 3-5/8 inch by 1 inch case, so it requires a mortise pocket while the Cal-Royal is a separate product line.
17) Is the Schlage L464P electrified or does it need any wiring?
Purely mechanical. There is no electronic component in the L464P, so no power supply, transfer hinge, or door loop is needed. Operation is key from outside and thumbturn inside. Electrified options exist elsewhere in the L Series, not on this deadbolt.
