Schlage 21-002-122 C 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 21-002-122 cylinder fit my Schlage A series knobs?
The 21-002-122 is a 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder built for Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, with one exception you need to check first: it does not cover the A73, A85, or H185 functions. If the knob you are servicing is one of those three functions, this is the wrong part. For every other A or H Orbit knob it drops straight in as a replacement cylinder.
2) Do the Schlage 21-002-122 knob cylinders come keyed, or do I have to have them cut?
They ship 0 bitted, meaning the plug is pinned to no combination and the two keys supplied with each cylinder are uncut blanks. A locksmith cuts and pins them to whatever you need. That is what makes them workable on a building rekey: order the quantity you need in one keyway, and they can all be pinned keyed alike to a single key, or set up to your existing master system, rather than arriving on a factory combination you have to work around.
3) Can I get a Schlage 21-002-122 knob cylinder in the keyway my building is already on?
Keyways offered run across the Classic and Everest families: C, CE, E, EF, F and G, plus the multiplex sections C123, C124, C125, C134, C135, C145, C234, C245, C345, S123, S124, S125, S134, S135, S145, S234 and S345. The cylinder accepts any Schlage keyway, and the platform supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Pull the keyway stamp off one of your existing keys or your keying schedule and order the matching section, then have it cut to your change or master key.
4) What finishes does the Schlage 21-002-122 key-in-knob cylinder come in, and will it match my existing knobs?
Four finishes: 606 satin brass, 626 satin chrome, 622 matte black and 643E aged bronze. Only the cylinder face shows once it is installed, so match it to the knob finish already on the door rather than to the door hardware elsewhere in the building. If your knobs are the common commercial 626 satin chrome, take the 626 cylinder and the face will disappear into the knob.
5) Do I need to order left hand and right hand versions of the Schlage 21-002-122 cylinder?
No. The 21-002-122 is non-handed, so one part number covers both hands. On a mixed building where some doors swing left and some swing right, you order a single cylinder and sort only by keyway and finish.
6) Is this Schlage knob cylinder heavy duty enough for a high traffic commercial entry?
It is a commercial-rated part, built in brass and stainless steel rather than pot metal or zinc. That is the construction that holds up on an opening cycled hundreds of times a day, and it is why the same cylinder gets specified for office corridor doors and multi-family common areas rather than just residential interiors.
7) My knobs are not Schlage. What key-in-knob replacement cylinder do I use instead?
The 21-002-122 is keyed to Schlage A and H Orbit knobs only, so it will not serve another manufacturer's knob. For Sargent knobs and levers, the Kaba Ilco 1579 is the cylinder built for that application. Kaba Ilco also makes the 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder and the 1539 universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder, which are the ones to look at when you are servicing a mixed building and do not want a separate part number for every brand on site.
8) I need knob cylinders that arrive already keyed with cut keys, not blanks. What do I order?
Every 21-002-122 comes 0 bitted, so if you have no locksmith on the job it will sit in the box unusable. When you need a cylinder that arrives ready to hang, the Falcon A23161-05 G key in lever cylinder ships keyed different with two cut keys in a 6-pin G keyway. That is the trade-off: a 0 bitted cylinder can be pinned into your existing system, a factory-keyed one cannot.
9) The door turned out to have a mortise lock, not a knob. What cylinder do I order instead?
The Schlage 21-002-122 is the key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, so a mortise lock case needs a threaded mortise cylinder instead. Three to look at, and the cam is what decides it. The Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder is 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam. The Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series mortise housing is 1-1/4 inch, 6-pin, with an A01 cloverleaf cam. The Adams Rite 4036 is a five-pin mortise cylinder, Grade 1, with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. Measure the length you need from the face of the lock and confirm the cam the lock case calls for before ordering, because cam shape and cylinder length are not interchangeable between these.
10) What do I use for a rim exit device rather than a knob?
A rim device takes a rim cylinder with a tailpiece, not a key-in-knob cylinder, so the Schlage 21-002-122 is not the part for that opening. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, which is the keyed option. Where the trim needs to look keyed but nothing should operate, the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder has a 1-5/32 inch diameter. Check the tailpiece length against your device, since rim tailpieces are cut to the device and the door thickness. Keep the 21-002-122 for the Schlage A and H Orbit knobs it is built for.
11) Should I standardize the facility on these Schlage knob cylinders or move to interchangeable core?
Standard cylinders like the 21-002-122 have to come apart to be rekeyed, which means a locksmith at every door. Interchangeable core is the alternative when you rekey often, since the core pulls with a control key and swaps in seconds. BEST offers the 1CB Peaks 150 Series interchangeable core, the 1CDF drill resistant patented 7-pin core in brass, and the 1C5 standard 5-pin core. The catch is that going IC means changing the lock prep or the housings, so it is a decision for a building-wide program, not a one-door repair. For a straight like-for-like swap on existing Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, stay with the 21-002-122.
12) Is there a non-Schlage key-in-knob cylinder that can stand in for the Schlage 21-002-122?
The Schlage 21-002-122 is a 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder made to go into Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, less the A73, A85 and H185 functions, and it ships 0 bitted in the Schlage keyway you pick with 2 keys. Two aftermarket parts cover the same key-in-knob position from another maker: the Kaba Ilco 1539, a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, and the Kaba Ilco 1599, a key-in-knob replacement cylinder. The difference that matters at the bench is the keying platform. The Schlage part is ordered in a specific Schlage keyway and pinned by you, so it drops into an existing Schlage master key system; the Ilco 1539 and 1599 are universal replacement cylinders sold to fit knob and lever bodies rather than to a single manufacturer's knob series. If the building is already keyed Schlage and the knobs are A or H Orbit, the 21-002-122 keeps the key system intact.
13) I need a knob or lever cylinder that arrives already cut to a key, not one I have to pin. What are my options?
The Schlage 21-002-122 is supplied 0 bitted, in keyways including C, F, G, E, CE, EF and the C and S multiplex combinations, with 2 keys. That is the right form if you are pinning it into an existing Schlage system on your own bench or shop. If you want the cylinder to arrive cut instead, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder from the RU/T series, 6-pin, G keyway, keyed different and supplied with 2 cut keys. Note the difference in application before you order: the Falcon part is a key-in-lever cylinder, while the 21-002-122 is the key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, and keyed different means that cylinder carries its own key rather than joining a master key system.
14) The Detex MC65 says Schlage C keyway and 6-pin, the same as the Schlage cylinder I was looking at. Can I put it in a Schlage A knob?
No, and this is a common mix-up. The Detex MC65 is a mortise cylinder with a Schlage C keyway, 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin, commercial grade. Sharing the Schlage C keyway means it takes a Schlage C key, so it can be keyed into the same system, but the body is a threaded mortise cylinder that screws into a mortise lock case or a mortise housing. It has no path into a knob. The Schlage 21-002-122 is the 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, less the A73, A85 and H185 functions. Keyway is a keying question; cylinder format is a fitment question, and the two are decided separately.
15) Our facility is moving to interchangeable cores so maintenance can rekey without pulling hardware. Does a Schlage 21-002-122 fit that program, or do we need something else?
The Schlage 21-002-122 is a fixed 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder that accepts any Schlage keyway and is a replacement part for Schlage A and H Orbit knobs. It is rekeyed by pinning the cylinder, not by pulling a core with a control key. For a core-based program the BEST 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core and the BEST Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder are the small-format route, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill-resistant patented interchangeable core, 7-pin, brass, 150 series, where you want a restricted key. On mortise locks specifically, the Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2 inch large-format interchangeable core mortise cylinder, 6-pin, for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. Small-format and large-format cores are separate platforms, so pick one and carry the matching housings.
16) I want the knob and the deadbolt on the same door to run on one key. Is the Schlage 21-002-122 the cylinder for both?
The Schlage 21-002-122 is the key-in-knob cylinder, and it is listed as accepting any Schlage keyway and fitting Schlage locksets and deadbolts, so on Schlage hardware it is keyed to the same system rather than being two separate keys. Where the deadbolt is not Schlage, the deadbolt position needs its own part: the Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder, and the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. Those are different keyways and different key systems from a Schlage-keyed knob cylinder, so a single key across the pair only works when both cylinders sit on the same keying platform.
17) We have a narrow stile aluminum storefront with an Adams Rite deadlock. Does a key-in-knob cylinder work there?
No. The Schlage 21-002-122 is a key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, which is a hollow metal or wood door knob application. A narrow stile aluminum door running an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock takes a cylinder pull: the Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting for the MS1847 deadlock system, and the Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the MS1847. For a wood door on the Adams Rite 5017 deadlock or deadlatch, the Adams Rite 4026 is the five pin tumbler cylinder pull. Confirm which deadlock is in the stile first, because the 4024 and 4025 are specified to the MS1847 and the 4026 to the 5017.
18) Our building is mixed hardware. Will the Schlage cylinder cover the Sargent knobs and levers too?
It will not. The Schlage 21-002-122 is compatible with Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, less the A73, A85 and H185 functions, and that is the boundary of it. Sargent knob and lever bodies take a cylinder built to that brand's tailpiece and cylinder format: the Kaba Ilco 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent. Ordering by opening rather than by building is the safe habit here, since a knob cylinder that is correct on one manufacturer's chassis will not seat in another's.
19) Some units have Emtek and Arrow hardware. Is the Schlage knob cylinder a retrofit for those, or is there a different part?
The Schlage 21-002-122 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder for Schlage A and H Orbit knobs, so it is not a retrofit for other makers' handlesets and interconnected locks. Those openings have their own parts. The Emtek CY4 is an Emtek cylinder sold each. The Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. The Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion rim type cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The tailpiece is what separates these from a key-in-knob cylinder, so match the part to the lock body you are opening up.
