1) Can I use the Schlage 23-013 in a mortise lock or rim exit device instead of a knob?
No, not as supplied. The 23-013 is built as the key-in-knob configuration. Schlage's modular cylinder platform lets one cylinder be converted to mortise, rim or key-in-lever by swapping the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so the underlying plug carries across, but a mortise or rim opening needs the correct housing for that application. For a mortise prep, a purpose-built mortise cylinder like the Corbin Russwin 1000 Series 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam or the Detex MC65 in Schlage C keyway is a more direct order. For a rim device, the Corbin Russwin 3070 6-pin rim housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece is the rim equivalent.
2) I am replacing just the cylinder, not the whole Schlage knob lock. Is the 23-013 the right part?
Yes, that is exactly what it is: a replacement cylinder for D Series knobs, sold on its own so you keep the existing knob, chassis and latch in the door. It changes who has a working key without touching the door prep. The one D Series function it does not cover is D85.
3) What is the difference between the Schlage 23-013 knob cylinder and the Kaba Ilco 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder?
Both are replacement cylinders for key-in-knob locks, but they come at the job from opposite directions. The Schlage 23-013 is a 6-pin cylinder built for Schlage D Series knob locks other than the D85 function, ordered in a specific Schlage keyway - C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, or one of the C1xx and S1xx multiplex sections - so it drops into an existing Schlage key system. The Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, the aftermarket route when the knob you are servicing is not a Schlage D. If the building is keyed in a Schlage keyway and the knob is a D Series, the 23-013 keeps the existing keys working; if you are replacing a cylinder in a non-Schlage knob, the 1599 is the part to look at.
4) Is the Schlage 23-013 the same thing as a mortise cylinder?
No, and the two are not interchangeable in a door. The 23-013 is a key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage D Series knob locks less the D85 function - it seats in the knob itself. A mortise cylinder threads into a mortise lock case: the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 mortise cylinder in 1-1/2 inch length with an A02 straight cam, or the Detex MC65 6-pin mortise cylinder at 1-1/8 inch cut for a Schlage C keyway, are examples of that format. The Detex MC65 is worth noting if you are keying a facility in Schlage C, since it carries the same keyway in a mortise body - same key system, different lock format.
5) Should I use the Schlage 23-013 or go to an interchangeable core so I can rekey without pulling the lock?
Two different service models. The 23-013 is a fixed 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage D Series knobs; rekeying means pinning the cylinder. An interchangeable core system lets a control key pull the core out of the housing instead - the BEST 1CB is a 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1CDF is a drill-resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass in the 150 Series, and the BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin core. Choose the 23-013 when the building is already keyed to Schlage D knobs and you are matching the existing system; choose an IC platform when you expect frequent tenant turnover and want core swaps done at the door.
6) The opening is an aluminum storefront door - can I use the Schlage 23-013 there?
Not as the cylinder for a storefront deadlock. The 23-013 is made for Schlage D Series knob locks less the D85 function, which is a bored cylindrical knob application. Narrow-stile aluminum storefront hardware takes a different family: the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 five-pin mortise cylinder with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, and the Adams Rite 4024 and 4025 are cylinder pulls for the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, the 4025 with through-screws and the 4024 with trim plate mounting. For a wood door version of that pull, the Adams Rite 4026 is built for the 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch.
7) What does 0-bitted mean when ordering a Schlage knob cylinder?
0-bitted means the plug ships uncut, with no working key combination in it. A locksmith pins and cuts it to whatever system the building runs on. That is why this cylinder comes in every Schlage section from Classic C through the Everest 29 S sections, and why it suits a shop stocking blanks rather than a property manager who wants a working key in the box. If you need it operating on arrival, choose keyed different or keyed alike instead.
8) Does the Schlage 23-013 come with keys?
Two keys ship with the cylinder. On the keyed different and keyed alike options those are cut keys; keyed alike is what you want when several knobs in the same suite or unit should open on one key.
9) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering a Schlage 23-013 replacement cylinder?

13) My lock is a Schlage lever, not a knob - does the 23-013 still fit?
The 23-013 is specified for Schlage D Series knob locks less the D85 function, with a knob handle type, so a lever body is a different part. On the Falcon side, the A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder for the RU/T series, 6-pin, G keyway, keyed different and supplied with two cut keys - the lever-format equivalent question. Both are 6-pin cylinders; the difference is the lock body they seat in and the brand key system they belong to.
14) I need to key a deadbolt to match the knobs I am doing with the Schlage 23-013 - is it the same cylinder?
