Schlage 23-001 C 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 23-001 cylinder fit my Schlage D Series knob lock?
It fits Schlage D Series knobs with one exception: the D85 function is excluded. Every other D Series knob takes the 23-001 six-pin key-in-knob cylinder. If the knob you are servicing is a D85, this is not the part for it. Handing is not a factor either way, the cylinder is non-handed and goes into a left or right hand door the same.
2) Can I get a Schlage 23-001 knob cylinder in the same keyway as the rest of my building?
Most likely. The 23-001 is made in the single sections C, E, F, G, CE, EF and FG, and in the multi-section keyways C123, C124, C125, C134, C135, C145, C245, C345, S123, S124, S125, S145, S234, S235 and S245. Read the section stamped on a key from the doors you are matching, order that keyway, and have the cylinder pinned into the existing system.
3) Does the Schlage 23-001 cylinder come keyed, or do I have to have it cut?
Every keyway option is supplied 0 bitted, so the plug carries no cuts and the two keys in the box are blanks. A locksmith bits and pins it to your system before it goes in the door. That is the reason to buy it this way, an apartment building or a school on an existing Schlage masterkey system gets this cylinder folded into that system rather than handing a tenant one more odd key.
4) I do not have a key machine. Is there a knob or lever cylinder that ships already cut?
Not the 23-001, it goes out 0 bitted for a locksmith to cut and pin. If you need something that works straight out of the carton, the Falcon A23161-05 G key-in-lever cylinder is supplied keyed different with two cut keys in a 6-pin G keyway. It is a Falcon RU/T series part though, not a Schlage D replacement, so it only helps if the lock it is going into is Falcon.
5) What finishes does the Schlage 23-001 knob cylinder come in, and how do I match my existing knobs?
Four finishes are stocked: 606 satin brass, 626 satin chrome, 622 matte black and 643E aged bronze. Those are standard BHMA finish codes, and Schlage stamps or lists the same code on the knob trim, so match the code rather than the color name. On a knob lock the cylinder face is the only part of this that shows, so a near miss on finish is visible from the corridor.
6) Can I use a Schlage 23-001 in a mortise lock or a rim exit device?
No. The 23-001 is a key-in-knob cylinder made for the knob housing on a Schlage D Series lock, and it will not serve a mortise case or a rim device. For a Schlage L9000 mortise lock, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch six-pin large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder built for that lock with the A01 Schlage L cam. For a rim device, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a six-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
7) My knobs are not Schlage. Will a 23-001 cylinder work in them?
It will not. The 23-001 is cut to the Schlage D Series knob and does not drop into another maker's knob housing. Kaba Ilco covers the other platforms: the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, the 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder, and the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent. Identify the lock brand off the face or the latch before ordering any of them.
8) Is the Schlage 23-001 an interchangeable core, so my maintenance tech can swap keying without a locksmith?
It is not. The 23-001 is a pinned cylinder supplied 0 bitted, which means rekeying it is a bench job with a pinning kit, not a control key and a core swap. Facilities that want a tech to change keying on the spot standardize on interchangeable core instead. The BEST 1C series is that platform, in a standard 5-pin core (1C5) and, where drill resistance and a patented key matter, the 7-pin brass 1CDF.
9) Can the Schlage 23-001 be keyed into an Everest 29 or Primus XP system, or only Classic?
All three. The Schlage modular cylinder platform the 23-001 is part of supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, which is what lets a property run restricted keys on the exterior and perimeter openings while the interior knob doors stay on a standard keyway inside the same hierarchy. Order the cylinder in the keyway section your system uses and have it pinned accordingly.
10) Is the Schlage 23-001 a commercial cylinder or a residential one, and what is it made of?
Commercial, and the parts are brass and stainless steel. It is sold as a replacement cylinder, so on a turnover or a rekey you pull the old one out of the D Series knob and pin this one to the new key rather than buying a whole lockset. That is the cheaper move on a building where the knobs themselves are still sound and only the keying has to change.
11) I need a 6-pin key-in-knob replacement cylinder but the door hardware is not Schlage - what else covers the same job?
The Schlage 23-001 is a 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder built to serve Schlage D series knobs less the D85 function, so it is matched to that specific knob chassis. If the knob on the door is something else, the Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder that addresses both handle styles from a single part number. Confirm which chassis is in the door before you pick, because the 23-001 is keyed to the Schlage D knob and the Ilco parts are the universal-fit route.
12) My techs carry cylinders for both knobs and levers. Is there a single part that covers both instead of stocking two?
The Schlage 23-001 is the knob-side part, made for Schlage D series knobs other than the D85 function. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder, which is the one-part-for-both-handle-styles approach, and the Kaba Ilco 1579 covers knob and lever openings on Sargent hardware. Those two are the consolidation options when a truck stock has to cover mixed knob and lever doors across a portfolio.
13) Can I use this same cylinder in the deadbolt above the knob?
No - the Schlage 23-001 is a key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage D series knobs less the D85 function, and a deadbolt takes a different cylinder body. For the deadbolt itself, the Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder, and the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder made for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. Order the knob cylinder and the deadbolt cylinder as separate line items even when you want them keyed alike.
14) What is the difference between this and a dummy cylinder that looks the same in the catalog?
The Schlage 23-001 is a keyed 6-pin cylinder for Schlage D series knobs and ships with two keys. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder is a 1-5/32 inch diameter dummy - it fills the hole and matches the look without providing a key function. If someone hands you a dummy to replace a working knob cylinder, it will mount but the door will not key.
15) Some of my doors have Schlage mortise locks instead of knobs. What cylinder goes in those?
The Schlage 23-001 is the key-in-knob part for Schlage D series knobs less the D85 function, and a mortise lock body takes a mortise cylinder instead. The Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC 6-pin mortise cylinder for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with the A01 Schlage L cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A02 straight cam. Cam style is the detail to confirm against the lock body before you order.
16) I found another 6-pin cylinder on a Schlage C keyway. Will that drop into my D series knob?
Sharing a keyway is not the same as sharing a body. The Detex MC65 is a 6-pin commercial grade cylinder on the Schlage C keyway, but it is a 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder, so it threads into a mortise lock case rather than a knob. The Schlage 23-001 is the 6-pin part that goes into Schlage D series knobs less the D85 function, and it can be ordered on a C keyway variant so both doors stay on one key.
17) We rekey often across a campus. Is a pinned cylinder or an interchangeable core the better fit for us?
They are two different service models. The Schlage 23-001 is a 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage D series knobs, pinned to the keyway you order and serviced by repinning. The interchangeable core route uses parts like the BEST 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core, the BEST Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, or the BEST 1CDF drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, where a control key pulls the core and a rekey becomes a core swap rather than a bench job.
18) The exit device on my stair door needs a cylinder too. Is this the right one?
The Schlage 23-001 is built for Schlage D series knobs less the D85 function, so it is not the part for an exit device. A rim application takes a rim cylinder such as the Corbin Russwin 3070, a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. Tailpiece length is the dimension to check against the device before ordering.
19) What do I use on aluminum storefront doors instead of a knob cylinder?
Narrow stile aluminum entrances do not take a key-in-knob cylinder like the Schlage 23-001, which is matched to Schlage D series knobs. The Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder with five-pin security rated down to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the storefront range. Where the opening runs an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock, the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws and the 4024 is the cylinder pull with trim plate mounting; the 4026 is the five pin tumbler pull for wood door applications on the 5017 deadlock.
20) Does a replacement cylinder come cut to a key, or do I have to have it pinned?
That varies by part, so check it before it hits the truck. The Schlage 23-001 is supplied 0 bitted across its keyway choices, such as C keyway and Everest 29 style S145, with two keys included, so a locksmith cuts it to your system. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin key in lever cylinder on the G keyway supplied keyed different with two cut keys, which arrives ready to work on its own key.
21) Will this work in a residential handleset or an interconnected lock on my smaller properties?
The Schlage 23-001 is a commercial key-in-knob cylinder matched to Schlage D series knobs less the D85 function, not a handleset part. For handlesets and deadbolts, the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder, the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion cylinder supplied with an Emtek tailpiece. For Emtek trim being serviced as a like-for-like, the Emtek CY4 cylinder is sold each.
