Schlage 23-014 S123 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Falcon equivalent of the Schlage 23-014 key-in-knob cylinder?
The closest Falcon part is the A23161-05 G, a key-in-lever cylinder from the RU/T series, 6-pin, G keyway, supplied keyed different with 2 cut keys. The Schlage 23-014 is a 6-pin cylinder built for Schlage D85 knobs and also ships with 2 keys, and a G keyway version is offered. The ordering difference is the keying: the Falcon arrives already keyed different, while the 23-014 comes 0 bitted, so a locksmith pins it into the existing system on site.
2) Does the Schlage 23-014 come keyed, or does a locksmith have to pin it?
Every keyway option is supplied 0 bitted, so the cylinder arrives with all-zero cuts and your locksmith pins it to your key. Two keys ship with it. That is the point of ordering it this way, you set it to the system already running in the building instead of adding another key. If you would rather have a cylinder that arrives keyed with cut keys, the Falcon A23161-05 G key-in-lever cylinder is supplied keyed different with two cut keys.
3) Which keyway do I order so the 23-014 matches the keys already in my building?
Order the keyway your existing Schlage system runs on. Available options cover the Classic single-section keyways C, E, F, G and the two-section CE, EF, FG, plus the multiplex sections C124, C125, C134, C135, C145, C234, C245, C345 and S123, S124, S125, S134, S135, S234, S235, S245, S345. All are 6-pin. If you do not know your section, pull an existing cylinder or read the stamp on a working key before you order, because a wrong keyway will not accept the key no matter how it is pinned.
4) Do I get the knob with the 23-014, or is it just the cylinder?
Cylinder only. The 23-014 is a replacement part, the 6-pin cylinder that seats in a Schlage D85 knob, and it comes with two keys. If the knob body or trim is what is damaged, you need the D85 knob itself, not this part.
5) I need a cylinder for a mortise lock or an exit device, is the 23-014 the right part?
No. The 23-014 is a key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage D85 knobs and it will not serve a mortise case or a rim exit device. For a mortise lock, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 Series is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder at 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam. On Schlage L9000 mortise locks specifically, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder listed with the A01 Schlage L cam. For a rim exit device, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
6) Can I key thirty Schlage D85 knobs alike using the 23-014?
Yes, and that is the cleanest way to do it. Order every cylinder in the same keyway and the same finish, all 0 bitted, and have them pinned alike in one sitting. Six pins gives your locksmith the chambers to fit them into a master system as well, so the units can run keyed alike while a master still opens everything. Two keys come with each cylinder.
7) Which finish of the Schlage 23-014 should I order to match my knobs?
Two finishes are made, 606 satin brass and 626 satin chrome. Match the cylinder to the knob it is going into, not to the hinges or the closer, since the cylinder face reads as part of the knob. 626 satin chrome is the finish most commercial openings are specified in, and 606 is the one to order if the knobs are brass.
8) Can I get the 23-014 as an interchangeable core so maintenance can rekey without a locksmith?
No, the 23-014 is a conventional 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder. Rekeying it means pulling the cylinder and repinning it. Interchangeable core is a different system, not a swap you make on the same knob, so switching means changing the lock hardware, not just the cylinder. If you are moving a facility that way, the BEST 1C Series standard 5-pin core, the BEST Peaks 1CB 150 Series core, and the drill resistant BEST 1CDF 7-pin patented core in the 150 Series are the core options carried.
9) Is a Schlage 23-014 cylinder built for commercial traffic or is it a residential part?
Commercial. The 23-014 is built in brass and stainless steel and belongs to Schlage's commercial line, which is what you want on a corridor, stairwell, or tenant door that gets keyed and cycled daily. It is not a light duty residential cylinder.
10) Are there other knob cylinders that will work if I cannot use the Schlage 23-014?
Knob cylinders are brand-specific, and the 23-014 is the one built for Schlage D85 knobs. The other knob cylinders carried are matched to their own hardware: the Kaba Ilco 1579 is made for Sargent knobs and levers, the Ilco 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder, and the Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder. Match the cylinder to the lock brand actually hanging on the door rather than to the keyway alone.
11) The Detex MC65 is also 6-pin with a Schlage C keyway. Can it go into a D85 knob in place of the 23-014?
No. The MC65 is a mortise cylinder, 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin, in the Schlage C keyway, so it threads into a mortise lock case rather than seating in a knob. The 23-014 is the 6-pin cylinder that goes into Schlage D85 knobs, and it is offered in a C keyway 0 bitted. Where the two do line up is the key system: both carry the Schlage C keyway, so a building keyed on C can take the MC65 at its mortise openings and the 23-014 at its D85 knobs.
12) We run Schlage D85 knobs on the corridors and Schlage L9000 mortise locks on the offices. Does the 23-014 cover both?
It covers the knobs only. The 23-014 is the 6-pin cylinder for Schlage D85 knobs. For the L9000 mortise locks, the Corbin Russwin 1080 series 1-1/2 inch large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder is built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks and carries the A01 Schlage L cam. That gives one part number for the knob openings and one for the mortise openings on the same floor.
13) How does the 23-014 compare with going to a BEST interchangeable core setup?
They are two different service models. The 23-014 is a standard 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage D85 knobs, shipped 0 bitted so it is pinned to whichever Schlage keyway the facility runs. BEST cores are ordered as cores: the 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the 1CDF drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, 150 series. Pin count and key system differ between the two paths, so this is a decision about which system the facility standardizes on rather than a like-for-like swap.
14) Can the 23-014 also rekey the deadbolt above the knob so the tenant carries one key?
Not directly. The 23-014 is the cylinder for Schlage D85 knobs, so it handles the knob half of the opening. For the deadbolt half, the Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder, and the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. Order the knob cylinder and the deadbolt cylinder as separate line items and have them pinned to the same key.
15) Our aluminum storefront doors have Adams Rite MS deadlocks. Is the 23-014 the cylinder for those?
No. The 23-014 is a commercial cylinder made for Schlage D85 knobs, which is a different prep entirely. Storefront openings are served by the Adams Rite parts: the 4024 cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both for the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull for the 5017 wood door deadlock, and the 4036 series five-pin mortise cylinder. Which one you need follows the deadlock model in the stile.
16) One position only needs to look like a keyed cylinder with no key function. Is a 23-014 the right part for that?
The 23-014 is a working keyed cylinder: 6-pin, supplied 0 bitted with 2 keys, and matched to Schlage D85 knobs. If the position is a rim prep that only needs to be filled and matched visually, the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder at 1-5/32 inch diameter is the non-functioning part for that prep. It is a rim size, so check the hole you are filling before substituting it for a keyed cylinder.
17) The units have Emtek handlesets rather than Schlage knobs. What takes the place of the 23-014 there?
The 23-014 is non-handed and fits Schlage D85 knobs, so it is not the part for an Emtek handleset. Emtek openings are served by the Emtek CY4 cylinder, sold each, and by Medeco retrofits: the 1065244 is a 5-pin lazy motion rim type cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinders, and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts.
