Schlage 21-002 C 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Schlage 21-002 key-in-knob cylinder in a mortise lock or a rim exit device?
No. A key-in-knob cylinder body is shaped for the knob it sits in and will not thread into a mortise case or mount behind a rim device. For a mortise lock, look at the Detex MC65, a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, or the Corbin Russwin 1070, a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. For a rim device, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. Match the cam or tailpiece to the lock you are feeding, because that is what actually drives the mechanism.
2) What does 0 bitted mean on a Schlage 21-002 cylinder, and can it be keyed into my building's existing system?
Every keyway option on the 21-002 is supplied 0 bitted, meaning the plug comes uncut and unpinned to a key, so your locksmith pins it to the building's existing keying instead of you working around factory cuts. That is what you want on a masterkeyed property. It is a 6-pin cylinder, and two keys are included. The alternative approach is a factory keyed-different cylinder, like the Falcon A23161-05 G key in lever cylinder, which arrives already keyed with two cut keys and its own unique key.
3) Which Schlage keyway should I order for a key-in-knob cylinder replacement?
Order the keyway stamped on the keys already in the building, not the one that looks closest. The 21-002 is offered in the Schlage Classic sections (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and G) plus the C-prefix multiplex set running from C123 up to C345, and in the Everest 29 S family from S123 through S345. Each cylinder is one keyway, so pull an existing key, read the section off the bow or the blade stamp, and order to that. Get this wrong and the key will not enter the plug, no matter how the cylinder is pinned.
4) Does the Schlage 21-002 come with the knob, or is it only the key cylinder?
Only the cylinder. The 21-002 is a replacement part in brass and stainless steel that drops into a Schlage A or H knob already hanging on the door. The knob, rose, latch, strike and the door prep all stay as they are. Buy it when the keying has to change, when a cylinder is worn or damaged, or when you are bringing an odd door onto the building's key system. If the knob itself is broken, you need the lockset, not this.
5) What finish do I order so the cylinder face matches the knobs already on my doors?
Faces are offered in 626 satin chrome, 606 satin brass, 622 matte black and 643E aged bronze. Match the BHMA number rather than the name, since finish descriptions vary between manufacturers and 626 is the standard commercial satin chrome most A series knobs in an office, school or apartment building are already wearing. If one wing or entrance was specified in aged bronze, order 643E for those openings and 626 for the rest. The cylinder face is the visible piece, so a mismatch shows on every door you touch.
6) I'm rekeying 40 doors with Schlage knobs. What do I have to specify to order these cylinders?
Two choices on the order and one check at the door. On the order: the keyway matching the building's keys, and the finish matching the knobs, in 626, 606, 622 or 643E. At the door: confirm the knobs are Schlage A or H series and are not the Orbit design or the A85 or H185 functions, because those take something else. There is no handing to sort out, and nothing to specify for door thickness on a knob cylinder. Every one arrives 0 bitted, so the locksmith pins the whole run to one new system in a single sitting.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage 21-002 and a Kaba Ilco 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder?
Both are key-in-knob replacement cylinders, but the 21-002 is Schlage's own part for its A and H knobs, 6-pin, in Schlage Classic and Everest 29 keyways and shipped 0 bitted for your keying. The Kaba Ilco 1599 is an aftermarket key-in-knob replacement cylinder. Where the door already carries Schlage knobs and the property runs on a Schlage key system, the Schlage cylinder keeps the keyway and the pinning consistent with every other opening you own, which matters more than the individual part when a master key has to work everywhere.
8) My doors have Schlage levers, not knobs. Will this cylinder work in them?
Levers take a different cylinder. The 21-002 is specified for A and H series knobs, and the knob and lever cylinder bodies are not the same part. For a lever, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder for the RU and T series, 6-pin in the G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder, and the 1579 is their knob and lever cylinder made for Sargent hardware. Confirm the lock family stamped on the lockset before ordering any of them.
9) I need a replacement key-in-knob cylinder for a Schlage A series knob. What else fits that job besides the Schlage 21-002?
The Schlage 21-002 is a 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder matched to Schlage A and H knobs, less the Orbit and A85/H185 functions, and it will accept any Schlage keyway. On the aftermarket side, the Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a universal cylinder that covers both key-in-knob and key-in-lever trim under a single part number. The difference is scope: the 21-002 is built to the Schlage A and H knob and stays inside the Schlage keyway families, while the Ilco parts are universal-fit cylinders sold across knob and lever trim generally.
10) Will a Kaba Ilco 1579 cylinder drop into a Schlage A series knob?
The Kaba Ilco 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder built for Sargent, so it is matched to Sargent trim. The cylinder specified for Schlage A and H knobs, less the Orbit and A85/H185 functions, is the Schlage 21-002, a 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder that accepts any Schlage keyway. Match the cylinder to the trim brand on the door: Sargent knob and lever trim takes the 1579, a Schlage A or H knob takes the 21-002.
11) Our building has Schlage L9000 mortise locks alongside A series knobs. Does the 21-002 cover the mortise doors too?
It does not. The 21-002 is the key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage A and H knobs less the Orbit and A85/H185 functions, and a mortise lock body takes a threaded mortise cylinder instead. For the L9000 openings, the Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2 inch 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder listed for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. Where a conventional mortise cylinder is wanted, the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A02 straight cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. On the mortise side you are matching cam style and housing length to the lock body; on the knob side the 21-002 is the fit.
12) Can the 21-002 be used in a rim exit device?
No. The 21-002 is a 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage A and H knobs, and it seats in the knob itself. A rim device is keyed by a rim cylinder that mounts through the door and drives the device chassis with a tailpiece. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing supplied with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece for that application. Both are 6-pin cylinders; what separates them is the mounting and the tailpiece drive.
13) The 21-002 keyway options are 0 bitted. Is there a comparable cylinder that arrives already cut?
The 21-002 is supplied 0 bitted in each keyway, including the C345 keyway in 626 satin chrome, so it is pinned to your key system after it arrives, and two keys come with it. A cylinder that ships already keyed is the Falcon A23161-05 G, a RU/T series 6-pin cylinder in the G keyway supplied keyed different with two cut keys. The Falcon part is a key-in-lever cylinder, so it goes to lever trim rather than to a Schlage A or H knob; the 21-002 is the one that goes into the knob and gets pinned to your system.
14) We turn units over constantly and would rather swap a core than repin. What is the interchangeable core alternative to the 21-002?
The 21-002 is a standard 6-pin key-in-knob cylinder that gets pinned to a Schlage keyway. If you want rekeying done by pulling a core instead, BEST covers that: the 1CB is a Peaks 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the 1C series is a standard 5-pin cylinder core, and the 1CDF is a drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass from the 150 series. Those three differ by pin count and core family, with the 1C at 5 pins and the 1CDF at 7. This is a system-level decision rather than a door-by-door one, since interchangeable core and standard pinned cylinders are two different keying architectures.
15) Aluminum storefront door with an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock. Is the 21-002 the cylinder for that opening?
No. The 21-002 is a key-in-knob cylinder for Schlage A and H knobs. An MS1847 deadlock is keyed from a cylinder pull: the Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting for MS1847 deadlock systems, and the Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the same deadlock, so the mounting method is the choice between them. On a wood door running the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock or deadlatch, the 4026 is the five pin tumbler cylinder pull. Where the opening takes a plain mortise cylinder rather than a pull, the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 five-pin mortise cylinder listed for a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness.
16) Can the 21-002 replace the cylinder in a Kwikset deadbolt or an Emtek handleset on our residential units?
No. The 21-002 is matched to Schlage A and H knobs, less the Orbit and A85/H185 functions. For a Kwikset single cylinder deadbolt, the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder built for that application. For Emtek, the Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin lazy motion rim type cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder listed for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. Emtek also carries its own CY4 replacement cylinder. Pin count separates them as well: the 21-002 and the Medeco 1012040 are 6-pin, while the 1065140 and 1065244 are 5-pin.
17) One door needs a cylinder face but no key function. Does the 21-002 have a dummy version, or is there something else for that?
The 21-002 is a working 6-pin cylinder: it takes a Schlage keyway and comes with two keys. For a face that fills the prep without operating anything, the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder is built for that purpose and measures 1-5/32 inch in diameter. The two are separated by function, not by fit, so decide by whether that opening ever needs to be keyed.
18) We key our whole portfolio to the Schlage C keyway. What handles openings that are not A or H knobs?
The 21-002 is offered in the C keyway itself and in the C-family sectional keyways, including C123, C234 and C345, so the Schlage A and H knob openings stay on your system. For a mortise opening on the same keyway, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway. Both are 6-pin cylinders; the MC65 threads into a mortise lock body while the 21-002 seats in the knob.
