Schlage 21-021 S123 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 21-021 cylinder fit an AL85 lever lock, and do I need to specify handing?
The 21-021 is the key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function, so it goes into the keyed outside lever of that lock. Handing is not part of the order: the cylinder is non-handed, and the same part serves a left hand or a right hand door. What you do have to call out is keyway and finish, since both are ordered per cylinder.
2) Does the Schlage 21-021 cylinder come already keyed, or does it need to be pinned?
Uncut. Every keyway option is supplied 0 bitted, meaning no bitting has been cut at the factory, so a locksmith pins it to your key code before it goes in the door. Two keys come with the cylinder. That is the format you want when you are keying into an existing master system or keying a run of doors alike: six pin chambers, and nothing pre-committed at the factory, so it can be pinned to whatever level of the system that door sits at.
3) Which keyway do I order on a Schlage 21-021 to match the keys already in my building?
Match the section stamped on your existing Schlage keys. The 21-021 is offered in the Classic C sections C, C123, C124, C125, C134, C135, C234, C245 and C345, the S sections S123, S125, S134, S145, S234, S245 and S345, and in E, F, G, CE, EF and FG. It takes any Schlage keyway, so order the exact section your system runs on rather than dropping to a plain C and breaking key control.
4) What finish should I order on the Schlage 21-021 so the cylinder matches my levers?
Match the lever, not the rest of the door hardware, since the cylinder face is the only part that shows and it sits in the lever itself. Finishes on the 21-021 are 626 satin chrome, 622 matte black, 606 satin brass and 643E aged bronze. On a building already standardized on 626, that is the one to keep on the truck.
5) Can I replace just the cylinder in a Schlage lever lock instead of the whole lockset?
That is what the 21-021 is for. It is the replacement keyed cylinder for the AL85 function lever, so the lever, chassis and latch stay in the door and only the keyed part changes. Construction is brass and stainless steel, and it is a commercial part rather than a residential cylinder. Two keys are included. The usual reasons to pull one: a key system change, a lost key situation, or a damaged cylinder in a lock that is otherwise fine.
6) Can a Schlage modular cylinder be converted from key-in-lever to a rim or mortise cylinder?
Yes, and that is the point of the modular design: changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing converts one cylinder between key-in-lever, rim and mortise, and the rear housing comes in six lengths to cover thicker doors. The 21-021 is supplied in the key-in-lever configuration for the AL85 lever. If you simply need a mortise cylinder and not a conversion, the Detex MC65 is a 6-pin, 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway.
7) Will a Schlage 21-021 cylinder work in a Falcon or Sargent lever lock?
No. The 21-021 is built for the Schlage AL85 lever and Schlage keyways, and it will not drop into another manufacturer's lever. For Falcon, the key-in-lever equivalent is the Falcon A23161-05 G, a 6-pin G keyway cylinder supplied keyed different with two cut keys. For Sargent knob and lever locks, the Kaba Ilco 1579 is the replacement cylinder.
8) Is the Schlage 21-021 an interchangeable core or a standard cylinder?
Standard, not a core. It is a conventional 6-pin cylinder pinned to your bitting and rekeyed by servicing the cylinder itself. If the goal is letting maintenance change keying at the door without taking the lock apart, that is an interchangeable core program instead: BEST 1C Series standard cores, which are 5-pin, or the BEST 1CB Peaks interchangeable core, both of which need a lock prepped to accept a core. Worth deciding up front, because the two approaches do not mix on the same opening.
9) Half our buildings run Falcon levers and half run Schlage ALX85. Is there a Falcon equivalent to the Schlage 21-021 key-in-lever cylinder?
They are brand-specific parts, so plan on two line items. The Schlage 21-021 is a 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function and accepts any Schlage keyway. Falcon's key-in-lever counterpart for its own levers is the Falcon A23161-05 G, an RU/T series 6-pin cylinder in the G keyway supplied keyed different with two cut keys. Order the 21-021 against the Schlage lever openings and the A23161-05 G against the Falcon ones.
10) We manage a portfolio with several different lever brands on the doors. Is there one cylinder that covers more than one brand instead of stocking a part per manufacturer?
The Schlage 21-021 is matched to the Schlage AL85 function lever, so it is the right part when the lock is Schlage. Where the levers are other brands, the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, and the Kaba Ilco 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent. A common approach is to keep the 21-021 for the Schlage openings and carry the universal 1539 for the mixed-brand doors.
11) Searching for replacement cylinders turned up the Ilco 1549 alongside the Schlage 21-021. Do they do the same job?
No, they serve different lock types. The Schlage 21-021 is a key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function with a lever handle. The Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder and its function is deadbolt, and the Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder. Match the part to what is actually in the door: lever, deadbolt, or knob.
12) The door does not need to be keyed, it just needs the hole filled. Will a BEST 12E dummy rim cylinder work where a Schlage 21-021 goes?
Only if you truly do not want the opening to key. The BEST 12E series is a dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32" diameter, so it has no keyed function at all and it is a rim-style part rather than a key-in-lever part. The Schlage 21-021 is a keyed 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function and comes with two keys. If the lever has to operate by key, the 12E dummy is not a stand-in for it.
13) The opening is a mortise lock, not a lever lock. Do I still order the Schlage 21-021 or a dedicated mortise cylinder?
The 21-021 is set up as a key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function, and the Schlage modular cylinder converts to mortise, rim, or key-in-lever by changing the tailpiece, cam, or rear housing. If you would rather buy the mortise cylinder already assembled, the Detex MC65 is a 6-pin mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway at 1-1/8", the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder is 1-1/2" with an A02 straight cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/4" 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. On any mortise cylinder the cam has to match what the lock body expects, so confirm the cam before you order.
14) I need a cylinder for a rim exit device, not for a lever. What should I be looking at instead of the Schlage 21-021?
A rim device takes a rim cylinder with a tailpiece, which is a different part from the 21-021 key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8" tailpiece. Check the tailpiece length the device calls for before ordering, since rim devices are specific about it.
15) Our campus is standardized on BEST interchangeable cores. How does that square with a Schlage 21-021?
They are two different keying platforms and a facility normally commits to one. The Schlage 21-021 is a 6-pin cylinder that accepts any Schlage keyway and supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP, and Classic key systems. A BEST core program runs on parts such as the BEST 1C standard 5-pin cylinder core, the BEST Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the BEST 1CDF drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, 150 series. If the campus master key system is BEST, keep the Schlage cylinders scoped to the Schlage AL85 lever openings rather than folding them into the core program.
16) The opening is an aluminum storefront door on an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock. Is the Schlage 21-021 the cylinder for it?
No, that is a different family of hardware. The 21-021 is a key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function lever. An MS1847 deadlock takes an Adams Rite cylinder pull: the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the MS1847, and the 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting for the same deadlock. If the same job has a wood door on an Adams Rite 5017 deadlock, the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is the one designed for it.
17) I need a Grade 1 rated cylinder for a thin stile door. What is the alternative to the Schlage 21-021 there?
The 21-021 is built around the Schlage AL85 lever function, so it goes where a Schlage lever is. For a thin door where a rated mortise cylinder is called for, the Adams Rite 4036 is a five-pin mortise cylinder listed as Grade 1 in the 4036 series with a 1/2" minimum door thickness. Verify the cam and the lock body it is going into before you commit the order.
18) Some of our units have Kwikset and Emtek residential deadbolts and handlesets. Can I use the Schlage 21-021 to bring those onto one key?
Not directly. The 21-021 is a commercial key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function. For the residential side, the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the Emtek CY4 is Emtek's own cylinder. Those retrofit cylinders are how you address the residential doors while the 21-021 covers the Schlage lever openings.
19) Does the Schlage 21-021 arrive cut to a key, or do I have to bit it myself?
The 21-021 keyway options are supplied 0 bitted, for example the C134 keyway 0 bitted, with two keys included, so it is intended to be pinned to your own key system. If you would rather have a key-in-lever cylinder that arrives already cut, the Falcon A23161-05 G is an RU/T series 6-pin G keyway cylinder supplied keyed different with two cut keys. Choose based on whether the job has a keying machine behind it or needs to go straight into the door.
20) I have a Schlage L9000 mortise lock and a Schlage lever on the same job. Is one cylinder good for both?
No, those are two different cylinder formats. The 21-021 is the key-in-lever cylinder for the Schlage AL85 function lever. For the L9000 mortise lock, the Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2" LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, called out for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. Order the lever cylinder and the mortise cylinder as separate lines and confirm the cam on the mortise side.
