Schlage 23-000 S123 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 23-000 cylinder fit my ND85 lever, and does handing matter?
The 23-000 is a 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder made for Schlage ND85 levers, and it is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left or right hand door. It replaces the cylinder in the lever, not the lockset, so the chassis, latch and trim stay in the door. Nothing about the opening changes when you swap it.
2) Does the Schlage 23-000 cylinder come keyed, or does a locksmith have to pin it?
Every keyway option on the 23-000 ships 0-bitted, meaning the plug has no working combination in it yet. A locksmith combinates it to your bitting on the bench or at the door before it goes into the lever. Two keys come with the cylinder.
3) Can I get a run of Schlage 23-000 cylinders keyed alike across a building?
Because the 23-000 arrives 0-bitted, a locksmith pins the whole batch to one combination, so a single key runs every ND85 lever you fit them into. The one thing to get right on the order is the key section: order them all in the same section. A C-section cylinder and an S-section cylinder take physically different key blades, so mixing them leaves you with two keys instead of one.
4) Which Schlage keyway do I order on a 23-000 cylinder to match the keys we already carry?
Match the section stamped on the Schlage cylinders already in your doors. The 23-000 is offered in Classic C and open C multiplex sections (C123, C124, C125, C134, C135, C145, C234, C345), Everest 29 S sections (S123 through S345), and the CE, EF, F, FG and G sections. Schlage's modular cylinder platform supports interchange between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a facility already on one of those does not have to start a second system to add doors.
5) Are the Everest 29 C and S keyway Schlage cylinders restricted to locksmiths?
Everest and Everest 29 Open products, which is what the C and S key sections are, are sold by Schlage only to commercial security professionals. Buyers in that channel may stock them and originate or duplicate keys without signature verification, and may resell to end users and to other commercial security dealers with a locksmith on staff. Selling them into residential retail outlets or through any auction channel is expressly prohibited.
6) Will the cylinder face match the finish on the ND85 levers already on our doors?
Order the front housing in the finish your levers wear. The 23-000 comes in 626 satin chrome, 606 satin brass, 622 matte black and 643E aged bronze, and Schlage builds the modular front housing in all lock finishes for exactly this reason. On a property where 626 is the standard on the corridor doors, the replacement cylinder disappears into the lever instead of announcing itself.
7) I need a Schlage-keyed cylinder for a mortise lock or a rim exit device. Is the 23-000 the same part?
No. The 23-000 is built as a key-in-lever cylinder for ND85 levers. Schlage's modular design does let one core serve mortise, rim and key-in-lever applications, but only by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so it is not a straight swap out of the box. If you want the right type ready to install, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway, and the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
8) Do thicker doors need a different Schlage modular cylinder length?
Door thickness is handled at the rear housing on Schlage's modular cylinder platform, which is offered in six rear housing lengths. The 23-000 is the key-in-lever build for ND85 levers, where the cylinder sits inside the lever rather than passing through the door, so a thick door does not change what you order for that application. The longer rear housings are what you reach for when the same core is built up into another cylinder type.
9) What is the Schlage 23-000 cylinder made of, and is it a commercial-duty part?
Brass and stainless steel, and it is a commercial cylinder, not a residential one. That is the same material spec Schlage builds its commercial lock cylinders to, which is what you want on a door that gets keyed, rekeyed and cycled hard over a lease term.
10) Can I put a BEST interchangeable core in a Schlage ND85 lever instead of ordering the 23-000?
No. The ND85 lever takes a conventional 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder, which is what the 23-000 is. A BEST small format core such as the 1C series 5-pin standard core or the 1CB 150 series core needs an IC-prepped housing with a control key to seat the figure-eight core, and an ND85 without that prep has nowhere for it to go. If your facility is standardized on BEST cores, the core has to come with a matching IC housing, not go into the Schlage lever.
11) What key-in-lever replacement cylinder do I use if the lever is not a Schlage?
The 23-000 is keyed to Schlage sections and built for ND85 levers, so it is the wrong part on another brand's lever. For Falcon, the A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder for the RU and T series, 6-pin G keyway, supplied keyed different with two cut keys. For Sargent knobs and levers, the Kaba Ilco 1579 is the replacement cylinder. Kaba Ilco also makes the 1539 universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder if you are covering a mixed set of openings.
12) Is there an equivalent 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder for Falcon levers, or does the Schlage 23-000 cover those as well?
The Schlage 23-000 is a 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder built for Schlage ND85 levers, and its keyway options are supplied 0 bitted for the locksmith to key. The Falcon side of the same job takes the Falcon A23161-05 G, a key in lever cylinder for the RU/T series, 6-pin in the G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys. Both are 6-pin key-in-lever cylinders; they differ in the lever family they seat in and in whether they arrive already bitted.
13) I need a Schlage C keyway cylinder for a mortise lock. Can I order the 23-000 for that?
The 23-000 is set up as a cylindrical lever cylinder for Schlage ND85 levers, so it seats in the lever, not in a mortise case. For a mortise body on the same key section, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The key section is common to both; the housing and the lock it threads into are not.
14) What is the difference between the 23-000 and a mortise cylinder like the Corbin Russwin 1000 or 1070?
The 23-000 is a 6-pin cylindrical lever cylinder that goes into a Schlage ND85 lever. The Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 series mortise cylinder, 1-1/2 inch, with an A02 straight cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1070 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. Mortise cylinders are specified by length and cam because the cam is what drives the mortise case; a key-in-lever cylinder is specified by the lever it fits.
15) Our facility is keyed on interchangeable cores. Is the 23-000 the right cylinder for that program?
The 23-000 is a 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder for Schlage ND85 levers and supports interchangeability between the Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. A small format interchangeable core program is served instead by cores such as the BEST 1C standard 5-pin cylinder core, the BEST Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, or the BEST 1CDF drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core, a 7-pin brass 150 series core. Those differ from the 23-000 in that the core is removed with a control key rather than the cylinder being pulled from the lever.
16) We have Schlage L9000 mortise locks on the corridor doors and ND85 levers on the offices. Is one cylinder good for both?
The 23-000 is the key-in-lever cylinder for the ND85 levers, in brass and stainless steel, and it accepts any Schlage keyway. The L9000 mortise openings take a mortise cylinder such as the Corbin Russwin 1080, a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. Two different housings, and the L9000 unit is a large format interchangeable core cylinder rather than a fixed one.
17) Can the 23-000 be used as the cylinder on a rim exit device?
As supplied it is a key-in-lever cylinder for Schlage ND85 levers, though the modular platform converts to mortise, rim or key-in-lever by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing. If you want a rim cylinder that arrives configured for rim service, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and where a rim opening needs a non-keyed filler the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder is 1-5/32 inch in diameter.
18) Our storefront doors are aluminum with MS deadlocks. Is the 23-000 what goes in those?
No, the 23-000 is a commercial key-in-lever cylinder for Schlage ND85 levers. Narrow stile openings on the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch take the Adams Rite 4024 cylinder pull with trim plate mounting or the Adams Rite 4025 five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, and the Adams Rite 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is for the 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. Where the case takes a threaded mortise cylinder instead, the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 five pin mortise cylinder with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness.
19) Will the 23-000 replace the cylinder in a Kwikset deadbolt or an Emtek handleset?
It will not; the 23-000 is a commercial key-in-lever cylinder for Schlage ND85 levers. Those retrofits are served by parts like the Medeco 1012040, a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the Medeco 1065140, a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the Medeco 1065244, a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece. The Emtek CY4 cylinder is the brand's own replacement part.
