Schlage 26-021 C 118 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) One cylinder in a Schlage mortise lock is worn out. Can I replace just the cylinder instead of the whole lock?
That is exactly what the Schlage 26-021 is for. It is a replacement mortise cylinder, and it is non-handed, so the same part serves left and right hand openings. Pull the old cylinder, match the keyway section so the existing keys still work, and match the finish to the trim on the door. The straight cam is what Schlage mortise lock bodies take. Two cut keys ship with the cylinder, so if the building has to stay on one key, budget for rekeying it to the existing system.
2) Will a Schlage 26-021 mortise cylinder work on a thicker door, or do I need a different cylinder?
Length is handled by the rear housing on Schlage's modular cylinder, and six rear housing lengths are offered to cover thicker doors. The core and front housing stay the same, so a thick door is a housing change, not a different cylinder. Handing is not a factor either; the cylinder is non-handed, so one part number covers both swings on a run of doors.
3) Can I get a Schlage 26-021 mortise cylinder in the keyway that matches the master key system already in my building?
Keyway section is a choose-at-order option, and the range is wide. Classic sections C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and G are offered, along with Everest sections including C123, C125, C145, C234, S123, S145, S234 and S345. Schlage's modular cylinder supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, and both basic and enhanced security levels are covered. Specify the section the building is already keyed in, because a cylinder cut to the wrong section will not accept your keys. Two cut keys come with each cylinder.
4) Does a straight cam fit my mortise lock, or do I need a cloverleaf cam?
Cam style has to match the lock body, and the Schlage 26-021 comes with a straight cam. It is not interchangeable across brands by assumption: a Corbin Russwin 1070 mortise housing takes an A01 cloverleaf cam, while the Corbin Russwin 1000 Series mortise cylinder uses an A02 straight cam. On the Schlage modular platform the cam is a replaceable part, so the same cylinder is converted to another application by changing the cam, tailpiece or rear housing.
5) Our locks are 626 satin chrome. Will the face of a Schlage 26-021 cylinder match the rest of the trim?
626 satin chrome is one of the finish options, and Schlage offers the front housing across the finish range so the cylinder face matches the lock. The other choices are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. Finish and keyway are specified independently, so changing finish across a building does not force a change to the keying.
6) What do I need to specify when ordering a Schlage 26-021 mortise cylinder?
Two decisions: finish and keyway section. The rest is fixed. It is a mortise cylinder with a straight cam and a compression spring, supplied with two cut keys. Keyway has to match the system the doors are already keyed in. If the door is thicker than standard, the rear housing is the part that changes and six lengths are offered.
7) Our spec calls for BHMA certified cylinders. Is the Schlage 26-021 certified?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which is the standard covering auxiliary locks and associated products, cylinders included. It is a commercial cylinder rather than a residential one, so that certification line is what goes on the submittal.
8) Can I use a Schlage 26-021 cylinder in a rim exit device?
Not as it ships. The 26-021 is built as a mortise cylinder with a straight cam, which threads into a mortise lock body. Schlage's modular design does convert between mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the rear housing, cam and tailpiece, so the core carries over, but those rim parts have to be ordered separately. If you would rather buy a purpose built rim housing, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, in Corbin Russwin keying.
9) We rekey units constantly and want to stop pulling and repinning cylinders. What replaces a 26-021 if we standardize on interchangeable core?
The Schlage 26-021 is a conventional keyed mortise cylinder, so a key change means the cylinder itself gets repinned. An interchangeable core program moves that work to a core that lifts out with a control key. On that side, the BEST Peaks 1CB 150 series is an interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core is the core that seats in it, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, also 150 series. If the mortise locks in the building are Schlage L9000, the Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2 inch 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder built with the A01 Schlage L cam for those locks.
10) What other mortise cylinder takes a Schlage C keyway?
The Detex MC65 is a commercial grade 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, so it accepts keys from an existing Schlage C system. The difference is what happens later: Schlage's modular cylinder changes between mortise, rim and key-in-lever applications by swapping the rear housing, cam and tailpiece, and it is offered across the full range of Schlage keyway sections rather than one. If everything on site is already C keyway and you only need a mortise cylinder, either one keys in.
11) Will a Schlage mortise cylinder work in an aluminum storefront deadlatch?
Storefront deadlatches are Adams Rite style hardware and want the cylinder built for it. The Adams Rite 4036 is that part: a five pin mortise cylinder, Grade 1, rated to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is what a narrow aluminum stile gives you. The Schlage 26-021 is a commercial mortise cylinder with a straight cam intended for mortise lock bodies. If the storefront uses an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock, the 4025 cylinder pull with through-screws or the 4024 with a trim plate are the cylinder pull options built for that lock.
12) Is the Detex MC65 a workable stand-in for the Schlage 26-021 mortise cylinder on an opening already keyed to Schlage C?
The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, so it threads into the same mortise lock cylinder pocket and pins into an existing Schlage C system. The difference is what the part can become afterward. The Schlage 26-021 is a modular cylinder: adding or changing the front housing, the rear housing, the cam, or the tailpiece turns the same body into a mortise, rim, or key-in-lever cylinder, and it supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP, and Classic key systems. The MC65 is a dedicated mortise cylinder and stays one. The 26-021 arrives as a mortise cylinder with a straight cam and 2 keys.
13) The mortise lock is in a thick door and a standard length cylinder sits too deep to reach the face. What do I order instead?
Stay with the Schlage 26-021 body and change the rear housing. The modular cylinder accommodates thicker doors through six available rear housing lengths, so the door thickness is handled by swapping one component rather than buying a different cylinder. If the opening is Corbin Russwin rather than Schlage, the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder comes in a 1-1/2 inch length with an A02 straight cam, which is the same straight cam arrangement the 26-021 uses, and the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series 6-pin mortise housing is offered at 1-1/4 inch.
14) Our mortise locks need a cloverleaf cam. Does that rule out the Schlage 26-021?
The 26-021 is supplied with a straight cam, and the cam is the part the lock body actually engages, so a lock built around a cloverleaf will not be driven by the cylinder as it ships. Two ways around it. The modular construction lets the cam be changed on the same cylinder body, so the 26-021 can be reconfigured rather than replaced. Or buy the cam already fitted: the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing comes with the A01 cloverleaf cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder comes with the A01 Schlage L cam for Schlage L9000 mortise locks.
15) Can I drop a Corbin Russwin 3070 rim cylinder into the mortise lock in place of a 26-021?
No, they drive the lock two different ways. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, meaning a flat tailpiece passes through the door to a surface-mounted device on the far side. The Schlage 26-021 is a mortise cylinder that threads into the lock case and turns a straight cam inside it. Worth knowing before you order two parts: the 26-021 modular body itself converts to a rim cylinder by changing the rear housing and fitting a tailpiece in place of the cam. Also do not confuse either with the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder at 1-5/32 inch diameter, which is a dummy and does not operate a lock.
16) The doors are key-in-lever locks, not mortise locks. Is the 26-021 still the cylinder I want?
Not in the form it ships. The Schlage 26-021 comes configured as a mortise cylinder with a straight cam and a compression spring, which suits a mortise lock case. Its modular design does convert to key-in-lever or key-in-knob by changing the rear housing and tailpiece, so it is a valid path if you are already stocking the modular components. If you want a cylinder purpose-built for the lever, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder in the RU/T series with a 6-pin G keyway, keyed different, supplied with 2 cut keys, and the Kaba Ilco 1539 series is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder.
17) Narrow stile aluminum entrance with an Adams Rite deadlock in the stile. Is a Schlage mortise cylinder the right part here?
For an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock the mating cylinder is normally the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder, a five-pin Grade 1 cylinder rated down to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the figure that matters on a narrow stile where there is very little metal to thread into. The Schlage 26-021 is a commercial mortise cylinder with a straight cam and compression spring, non-handed, and it belongs on a mortise lock case that takes a cam-driven cylinder. Check what the deadlock in the stile actually accepts before ordering either.
18) The exterior door needs a keyed pull, not just a cylinder. What is the difference between ordering a cylinder and ordering a cylinder pull?
A cylinder is the keyed plug alone, the Schlage 26-021 being a mortise cylinder with a straight cam that threads into the lock case. A cylinder pull is the keyed cylinder plus the exterior pull handle as one assembly. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both for the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock or deadlatch, and the Adams Rite 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull for wood door applications with the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock or deadlatch. If the door already has its pull, you want a cylinder. If the opening has no exterior grip at all, the pull version covers both parts in one order.
19) Can I use the same cylinder on the apartment deadbolts as on the commercial mortise locks so everything runs on one key?
Not the same part, no. The Schlage 26-021 is a commercial mortise cylinder driven by a cam inside a mortise lock case. A residential deadbolt of the common bored type is driven by a tailpiece, so it takes a rim-type cylinder. Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. Two different cylinder formats, keyed to a common system through the key bitting rather than by using one part everywhere.
20) The specification calls for mortise cylinders certified to ANSI A156.5. Which cylinders satisfy that line on the submittal?
The Schlage 26-021 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001 and is offered with both basic security and enhanced security features. Among the alternates, the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is Grade 1, and the Corbin Russwin 1000, 1070, and 1080 are all Grade 1 series mortise cylinders, the 1000 at 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam, the 1070 at 1-1/4 inch with an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the 1080 a 1-1/2 inch LFIC version. Match the cam and length to the lock case on the drawing, since the grade line and the physical fit are decided separately.
