Schlage 26-021 C 158 613 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I want interchangeable cores in my Schlage L mortise locks. Is the 26-021 an IC cylinder?
It is not. The 26-021 is a conventional keyed mortise cylinder held in with a compression ring, so changing keying means pinning the cylinder, not pulling a core with a control key. If interchangeable core is what you are standardizing on, the Corbin Russwin 1080 in a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder is built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks and carries the A01 Schlage L cam. BEST interchangeable cores such as the 1CB or the drill resistant 7-pin 1CDF are the other route where the housings accept them.
2) Can I put a Schlage 26-021 cylinder on the outside of an L9060?
No. The L9060 exterior is the one application called out as excluded from the 26-021, even though the rest of the Schlage L mortise line is the intended fit. Order it for that specific opening and you will have a cylinder that does not belong in the door. Every other L Series mortise lock is fair game.
3) I'm replacing worn cylinders across a building of Schlage L mortise locks. Is the 26-021 a straight swap?
For Schlage L Series mortise locks it is the factory replacement part, and being non-handed means one part number covers every door regardless of swing. Two things to line up before you buy the run: the finish has to match the trim already on the doors, and the keyway section has to match the keys your staff carry, or you end up with a separate key for those openings. Two cut keys come with each cylinder. Leave the exterior of any L9060 off the list, that one is excluded.
4) Can I get the Schlage 26-021 in a keyway that works with our existing master key system?
Keyway is an order option on the 26-021, and the sections offered span the Classic letter keyways (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G) and the numbered Everest 29 sections (C123, C124, C125, C134, C145, C235, C345, S123, S125, S134, S135, S145, S234, S235, S345). Schlage supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic systems, so pick the section stamped on the keys already in service rather than guessing from the lock. Each cylinder ships with two cut keys.
5) Will the Schlage 26-021 cylinder match the finish on my existing door hardware?
Finish is an order option covering 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. Order by the BHMA number off your hardware schedule, not the color name, since satin chrome 626 and satin nickel 619 read almost the same in a photo and do not match on the door.
6) What does the compression ring on a Schlage 26-021 do, and is anything else needed to install it?
Compression ring is the mounting application for the 26-021. The ring and its spring sit behind the cylinder and take up the slack between the cylinder and the lock face, so you thread the cylinder in until the keyway is upright and the spring holds it tight against the trim instead of stacking shim collars to get the depth right. Two cut keys are in the box.
7) Will a Schlage 26-021 cylinder work in a rim exit device?
No, wrong type. The 26-021 is a threaded mortise cylinder driven by a straight cam, so it belongs in a mortise lock body. A rim exit device needs a rim cylinder that drives the device through a tailpiece, not a cam. The Corbin Russwin 3070 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece is that part.
8) I have aluminum storefront doors with Adams Rite deadlocks. Is the Schlage 26-021 the cylinder for those?
The Schlage 26-021 is set up for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior, so it is aimed at that mortise lock case rather than a narrow stile storefront deadlock. For Adams Rite hardware, the 4036 is a five-pin mortise cylinder rated for doors 1/2 inch thick and up, in Grade 1. Where the opening calls for a pull with the cylinder in it, the Adams Rite 4024 uses a trim plate mounting and the 4025 uses through-screws, both designed for use with the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, while the 4026 is the five-pin cylinder pull for wood door applications with the Adams Rite 5017 deadlock and deadlatch.
9) How is the Schlage 26-021 different from a Detex MC65 mortise cylinder?
Both are commercial mortise cylinders, but they solve different ordering problems. The 26-021 is a Schlage part with a straight cam matched to Schlage L Series mortise locks, and you choose the finish and the keyway section at order time from the Classic and Everest 29 ranges. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin cylinder supplied in the Schlage C keyway, so it drops into an existing Schlage C system but comes as a fixed length and keyway. Length and cam have to suit the lock body and trim you are fitting into, so those are the two things to check before substituting either way.
10) Is a Corbin Russwin 1000 Series straight cam mortise cylinder the same thing as a Schlage 26-021?
Same category, not the same part. The Schlage 26-021 carries a straight cam and is specified for Schlage L Series mortise locks. The Corbin Russwin 1000 Series in a 1-1/2 inch length is a Grade 1 cylinder with an A02 straight cam, and Corbin Russwin also builds the 1070 in a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. Cam shape and cylinder length are what decide whether a cylinder actually drives the lock it goes into, so match those to the lock body rather than assuming one straight cam equals another.
11) Does the Schlage 26-021 cylinder meet ANSI/BHMA requirements for a commercial hardware schedule?
Certification on record for the 26-021 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it is a commercial product rather than a residential one. If your schedule calls for a BHMA-certified cylinder to A156.5 in Schlage L Series mortise locks, this satisfies that line item across the facility, and the same model number covers every finish and keyway you standardize on.
12) I want removable cores on my Schlage L9000 mortise locks instead of a pinned cylinder. What goes in place of the 26-021?
The Schlage 26-021 is a conventional 6-pin mortise cylinder that is pinned to the key system and ships with 2 keys, and it is made to work with Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior. If the goal is rekeying by pulling a core rather than repinning, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with the A01 Schlage L cam. Same lock case, two different rekey methods: repin the 26-021, or swap the core in the 1080.
13) Both cylinders are 6-pin mortise and the same length. Does the cam type really change which one I order?
Yes, the cam is the part that turns the lock, and it is the detail that separates otherwise similar mortise cylinders. The Schlage 26-021 uses a straight cam. Among mortise cylinders from other makers, the Corbin Russwin 1000 in 1-1/2 inch carries an A02 straight cam, while the Corbin Russwin 1070 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing carries an A01 cloverleaft cam and the Corbin Russwin 1080 LFIC mortise cylinder carries the A01 Schlage L cam. Ordering on length and pin count alone can land a cylinder that threads in and still will not drive the lock.
14) Can I use a Corbin Russwin 3070 rim cylinder in place of a Schlage 26-021?
No, those two mount in different places on the door. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, meaning it is fastened from the inside face of the door and drives a rim device through that tailpiece. The Schlage 26-021 is a mortise cylinder that threads into the lock case and turns the lock through a straight cam, and it is made for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior. A rim cylinder and a mortise cylinder are not interchangeable even when both are 6-pin.
15) Half the doors on the property take a cylinder in the lever or knob rather than in a mortise case. What do those openings need?
They need a key-in-lever or key-in-knob cylinder, not a mortise cylinder. The Schlage 26-021 is a mortise cylinder for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior. For bored lever and knob locks, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder, RU/T series, 6-pin in the G keyway, keyed different with 2 cut keys; the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder; the Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder; and the Kaba Ilco 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent locks.
16) We are standardizing a campus on interchangeable cores. How does the Schlage 26-021 compare with the BEST core line?
The Schlage 26-021 is a conventional 6-pin mortise cylinder, BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, pinned to the key system and supplied with 2 keys. BEST approaches the same problem with cores that lift out of the housing: the 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, also 150 series. The decision point is whether the facility rekeys by repinning cylinders or by pulling and replacing cores with a control key.
17) I key the property on Schlage C. Do I have to give that up on doors that are not Schlage locks?
Not necessarily. The Schlage 26-021 mortise cylinder is offered in Schlage keyways including the C keyway and the G keyway, so mortise openings stay on the existing key system. Where the device is a Detex, the MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway, which keeps that opening on the same key. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder in the G keyway for bored lever locks. Match the keyway letter across the property and the cylinders can differ by brand without splitting the key system.
18) Can one of the Medeco rim cylinders be used to key a mortise lock instead of the 26-021?
No, those are built for bored deadbolts and handlesets rather than a mortise lock case. The Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. Each drives a tailpiece. The Schlage 26-021 is a commercial mortise cylinder that turns the lock with a straight cam.
19) A supplier offered me a BEST 12E dummy cylinder as a lower cost stand-in. Will it work where a 26-021 works?
It will not operate a lock. The BEST 12E is a dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter, so it fills a cylinder hole and takes no key function, and it is a rim format rather than a threaded mortise body. The Schlage 26-021 is a working 6-pin mortise cylinder with a straight cam, supplied with 2 keys, for Schlage L mortise locks less the L9060 exterior. A dummy belongs on an inactive leaf or a blank prep, not on a door that has to lock.
