Schlage 26-021 S123 134 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage 26-021 come with the lock body, or is it just the cylinder?
Cylinder only. The 26-021 is a replacement mortise cylinder for a lock case you already have, supplied with 2 keys. The lock body, trim and strike stay as they are. It is a modular cylinder, so if the one you pull out turns out to be a different length or takes a different cam, you change the rear housing, cam or tailpiece rather than buying a whole different cylinder.
2) My mortise lock takes a straight cam cylinder. Is this the right one, and what if I need a cloverleaf cam?
Straight cam is how the 26-021 is built, so it goes into mortise locks specified for a straight cam, and it uses a compression spring. The cam is one of the modular parts, so it is not a dead end if the next lock needs something different. If you need a cloverleaf cam cylinder off the shelf, the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 Series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing uses an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 Series mortise cylinder at 1-1/2 inches uses an A02 straight cam.
3) Will this Schlage mortise cylinder key into the master key system already running in my building?
Match the keyway stamped on the key you already carry. The 26-021 is offered in the Schlage Classic keyways C, E, F, G, CE, EF and FG, and in the sectional keyways C123 through C345 and S123 through S345. Schlage's modular cylinder supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a site standardized on any of those can stay on one platform. Two keys come with each cylinder.
4) Can I put a Schlage modular mortise cylinder on a rim exit device?
Not as it ships. The 26-021 is set up as a mortise cylinder with a straight cam, and a rim device needs a rim cylinder driving a tailpiece. Conversion is the point of the modular platform: adding or changing the front and back housing turns one cylinder into mortise, rim or key-in-lever, with the tailpiece, cam or rear housing being the parts you change. If you would rather buy a rim unit outright, the Corbin Russwin 3070 6-pin rim cylinder housing comes with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
5) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage 26-021 mortise cylinder?
No hand to call out, the cylinder is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left or right hand door. What you do specify on the order is the keyway and the finish. It is a commercial cylinder and it comes with 2 keys.
6) Can I get a Schlage mortise cylinder in a finish that matches the locks already on my doors?
Front housings are available in all finishes to match the locks, and the 26-021 is carried in 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. For a building already on commercial lever hardware, 626 and 630 are the two finishes that usually match what is on the doors.
7) Is the Schlage 26-021 cylinder BHMA certified for a commercial hardware spec?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which is the standard cylinders and auxiliary locks are certified under, so it answers a drawing that calls for a certified commercial cylinder. Security is listed at two levels, basic security and enhanced security, which follow the keyway and key system you order it in rather than the cylinder body.
8) I am rekeying an aluminum storefront door with an Adams Rite deadlock. Is a Schlage mortise cylinder the right part?
The 26-021 is a commercial mortise cylinder built for mortise lock cases. For Adams Rite storefront hardware the parts made for those locks are the 4024 cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both for the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, and the 4026 five pin cylinder pull for the 5017 wood door deadlock. If it is a mortise cylinder you need for a thin stile, the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 five pin mortise cylinder listed to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness.
9) Our facility is standardized on interchangeable core. Can we use the Schlage 26-021?
The 26-021 is a conventional mortise cylinder, not an IC housing that takes a removable core, so it has to be pinned to rekey it rather than swapped by pulling a core. A site running small format interchangeable core is better served by the BEST 1C Series standard 5-pin core or the Peaks 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder, with the 1CDF as the drill resistant patented 7-pin brass version in the 150 Series. Dropping a conventional cylinder into an IC facility breaks the core-swap workflow the rest of the doors run on.
10) I need a replacement cylinder for a key-in-lever or key-in-knob lock, not a mortise lock. What do I order?
The Schlage modular cylinder converts to key-in-lever or key-in-knob by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so the 26-021 body can be built that way instead of buying a second cylinder. If you want a purpose-made unit, the Kaba Ilco 1539 Series key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder and the 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder cover that, with the 1579 being the version for Sargent knobs and levers. For Falcon RU/T series levers, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin G keyway key-in-lever cylinder supplied keyed different with 2 cut keys.
11) Which Corbin Russwin mortise cylinder covers the same opening as the Schlage 26-021?
Corbin Russwin's 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder in the 1-1/2 inch length with the A02 straight cam is the direct counterpart - a keyed mortise cylinder that threads into a mortise lock case and turns a cam, which is what the 26-021 does as well. The dividing line is the key system. The 26-021 is a modular cylinder supporting Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic Schlage key systems, so it keys into an existing Schlage master system, while the Corbin Russwin 1000 runs on its own keyway.
12) Will a cloverleaf cam cylinder work where a straight cam is specified?
The cam has to match what the lock case expects, so the two are not swappable. Corbin Russwin's 1070 Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing uses an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the 1080 Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder uses an A01 cam cut for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. Both are mortise bodies, but the cam blade is what drives the lock hub, which is why ordering on length and pin count alone puts the wrong cam on the job. On the 26-021 the cam is a separate component that changes along with the tailpiece and rear housing.
13) We rekey units constantly - is there a mortise cylinder that lets us pull a core instead of repinning?
Yes. Corbin Russwin's 1080 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder is a 6-pin large format interchangeable core body with the A01 Schlage L cam for L9000 mortise locks, so a control key removes the core and a replacement drops in. BEST works the same way on its own platform with the 1C standard 5-pin cylinder core and the 1CB Peaks 150 series interchangeable core. The 26-021 is a conventional pinned mortise cylinder on a Schlage keyway, which suits a building that rekeys at the pin stack rather than by core exchange.
14) Can a rim cylinder be used on a mortise lock case?
No. A rim cylinder mounts through the door face and drives the lock with a tailpiece - Corbin Russwin's 3070 6-pin rim cylinder housing carries a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and BEST's 12E series rim body is a 1-5/32 inch diameter dummy with no keying in it at all. A mortise cylinder such as the 26-021 threads into the lock case and turns a cam, so the preps are different. Where the 26-021 does bridge the two is at the bench: changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing converts it between mortise, rim and key-in-lever.
15) The building is keyed to Schlage C and we need a cylinder for a Detex exit device - what fits?
Detex's MC65 is a 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder supplied in the Schlage C keyway at 1-1/8 inch, so it takes a C key on Detex hardware without a keying workaround. The 26-021 is offered in the C keyway as well, alongside C123, C124 and C125 sections, so the exit devices and the mortise locks can sit on one system. Confirm the cylinder length the exit device trim calls for before you order, since exit trim and a mortise lock case do not always want the same length.
16) Will this go into a Kwikset or Emtek deadbolt on a residential entry door?
Those openings take rim-type lazy motion cylinders instead. Medeco's 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder made for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts; the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit for Arrow JL interconnected locks and for the outside cylinder of Emtek handlesets and deadbolts; the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece; and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. Emtek's own CY4 cylinder covers Emtek trim. The 26-021 is a commercial mortise cylinder for a mortise lock case.
17) We need more physical attack resistance and tighter key control than a standard cylinder - what are the options?
BEST's 1CDF is a drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core, 7-pin brass, 150 series, so it combines a drill barrier with patented key control on a core-swap platform. The 26-021 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001 and comes in both basic security and enhanced security builds, and the Schlage key systems behind it include Primus XP as well as Everest 29 and Classic. Whichever route you take, key control only does its job when the whole opening group moves onto the same system.
