Schlage 26-091 F 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I am cylindering an exit device. Can a rim cylinder go in place of a mortise cylinder?
They are not interchangeable, even though both show up on exit devices. The 26-091 is a mortise cylinder listed as compatible with exit bars: it threads into the device and turns a cam, in this case a straight cam, cam number K510-730. A rim cylinder drives a flat tailpiece through the door instead. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder. Exit devices are prepped for one or the other, so read the device trim: a threaded cylinder hole with a cam retainer takes the mortise cylinder, a rim mounting plate with a tailpiece slot takes a rim cylinder.
2) Should I use a full size interchangeable core mortise cylinder or a conventional one?
Interchangeable core pays off where keys change hands often. The Schlage 26-091 is a full size interchangeable core mortise cylinder in 6-pin, so a rekey is a core swap at the door with a control key, no disassembly of the lock, and spare cores can be pinned in advance and carried in a truck. That is the case on apartment turnovers, dorms, and any facility rotating staff. For a single opening that will not change, a conventional mortise cylinder is simpler to stock, and the Detex MC65 is a 6-pin mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway at 1-1/8 inches. If a building is already standardized on Corbin Russwin large format IC, the CR1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder in 6-pin.
3) Does the Schlage 26-091 come keyed to my building, or do I have to key it myself?
It arrives 1 bitted with two keys. 1 bitted means every chamber is cut to the same single depth, so the cylinder operates and the door can be closed up during construction, but it carries no real security and it is not on your keying system. A locksmith pins the core to your bitting, or you drop your own core in, before the opening goes into service. Order the keyway that matches the system you are keying to, since that is fixed by the part and cannot be changed later.
4) Which Schlage keyway do I order for the 26-091 so it works with the keys we already carry?
Match the keyway stamped on the key in your hand. The 26-091 is offered in C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and G, which are the Classic keyways, and in C123, C145, C234, C245 and S123 from the Everest 29 family. The two families do not cross: a Classic C key will not enter an Everest C123 plug, because the Everest keyways carry a patent-protected check pin the Classic key has no undercut for. Schlage's cylinder program supports interchangeability across Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a facility can move a keyway family over time, but each cylinder is ordered to one keyway.
5) Will the straight cam on the Schlage 26-091 drive my mortise lock, or do I need a cloverleaf cam?
Cam is the thing to settle before you order. The 26-091 ships with a straight cam, Schlage part K510-730, and that has to match what the lock body or exit device trim was built to accept. A cylinder can thread in perfectly and still fail to retract the bolt if the cam is the wrong shape. Where a cloverleaf cam is called for, the Corbin Russwin 1070 mortise housing at 1-1/4 inch and the 1080 both use the A01 cloverleaf. For another straight cam option, the Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder, 1-1/2 inch, with the A02 straight cam.
6) I have aluminum storefront doors with Adams Rite deadlatches. Is the Schlage 26-091 the right cylinder for those?
No. The 26-091 is a commercial mortise cylinder built for mortise locks and exit bar mortise prep, not for narrow stile storefront hardware. Adams Rite deadlocks and deadlatches take their own cylinder: the Adams Rite 4036 is a five-pin Grade 1 mortise cylinder that works down to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is what a storefront stile gives you. If the opening uses a cylinder pull instead of a cylinder in the lock, the Adams Rite 4024 and 4025 are made for the MS1847 deadlock, and the 4026 is the wood door version for the 5017 deadlock.
7) Is the Schlage 26-091 handed? Our floor has left and right hand doors.
Non-handed. One part number covers both hands, so you are not counting lefts and rights when you order. Handing is decided by the lock body or the exit device, not by the cylinder that goes into it. The only two choices to make are keyway and finish.
8) What finishes does the Schlage 26-091 come in, and will it match the lock trim already on my doors?
Six finishes are available: 626 satin chrome, 625 bright chrome, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze and 622 matte black. Match the cylinder to the escutcheon or rose it sits in rather than to the door, since the cylinder face is the only part that shows once it is installed. 626 satin chrome is the default on most commercial lever and exit trim, so that is the safe pick when replacing an unknown. The body is brass, which is what takes those plated and oxidized finishes consistently across a building.
9) We are standardizing hardware across a portfolio of buildings. Does the Schlage 26-091 make that easier?
It reduces the count of parts you have to stock. One non-handed 6-pin mortise cylinder covers every opening regardless of hand, with the variables narrowed to keyway and finish, and it is a replacement part meant to go into locks that are already hung. Because it takes a full size interchangeable core, maintenance can rotate keying on a unit or a wing by pulling cores instead of scheduling a locksmith per door, and Schlage's cylinder program supports interchangeability across Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a portfolio on Classic can bring sensitive openings onto a restricted system without changing the hardware around them.
10) We already run interchangeable cores across the building. How does the Schlage 26-091 differ from the Corbin Russwin 1080 mortise cylinder?
Both are 6-pin interchangeable core mortise cylinders, but they are built for different core formats and different cams. The 26-091 takes a full size interchangeable core, 6-pin, and presents a straight cam to the lock body, cam number K510-730. The Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks, and it carries an A01 cloverleaf cam. Full size and large format cores are not the same core envelope, so the deciding factor is which core your master key system is already pinned for; after that, confirm whether the lock body is expecting a straight cam or a cloverleaf.
11) We do not run interchangeable cores. What is a conventional mortise cylinder with a straight cam instead of the 26-091?
The Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder is a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A02 straight cam, so it drives the lock the same way a straight cam does on the 26-091. The working difference is the core: the 26-091 is a full size interchangeable core cylinder, 6-pin, so the core comes out with a control key and rekeying is a core swap rather than a service call at the door. The Corbin Russwin 1000 is a standard mortise cylinder keyed in the body. If nobody on staff carries a control key, the conventional cylinder is the closer fit to how you already operate.
12) Our doors are keyed to Schlage C. Is there a fixed-core mortise cylinder in that keyway?
Yes. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway, so it keys into an existing C system without an interchangeable core. The Schlage 26-091 is offered in C keyway as well, along with C123, C145, C234, C245, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G and S123, and it is a full size interchangeable core cylinder, 6-pin, with a straight cam. Pick the MC65 if you want the key cut in the cylinder body, and the 26-091 if the site is set up to pull and swap cores. Either way, confirm the cylinder length the mortise lock body takes before ordering - the MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch cylinder.
13) We ordered a G keyway cylinder for lever locks. Is a mortise cylinder the right part for a key-in-lever?
Not as it sits. A key-in-lever lock takes a cylinder that drives the lever chassis through a tailpiece, not a mortise cylinder threaded into a lock case. For that opening the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder, RU/T series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys, and the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder. The 26-091 is a mortise cylinder and is also offered in G keyway, and the Schlage modular design is adaptable to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing. So the keyway can stay the same across the job; what changes is the cam or tailpiece the chassis needs.
14) The opening is an aluminum storefront door with a narrow stile. What mortise cylinder should I be looking at instead?
For a narrow stile aluminum door, the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is the one built for that condition: five-pin, Grade 1, and rated for door thickness from 1/2 inch minimum, which is what a glass door stile gives you. The Schlage 26-091 is a commercial mortise cylinder for mortise lock bodies and exit bars, and is 6-pin full size interchangeable core. If the storefront is running an Adams Rite deadlock, the 4036 is the cylinder written for that lock family; measure the stile depth before you commit to either.
15) The door has an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and no lever - what cylinder part do I order?
That opening usually calls for a cylinder pull rather than a plain mortise cylinder, because the pull carries the cylinder and gives you something to grab. Adams Rite makes the 4024 cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both designed for use with the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch. If the door is wood rather than aluminum and running the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock or deadlatch, the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is the version written for it. The 26-091 is a mortise cylinder for a mortise lock body or exit bar and does not include a pull.
16) Our doors are thicker than standard. Do I have to move up to a different cylinder length?
With the Schlage modular cylinder you change the rear housing rather than the whole cylinder - six rear housing lengths are available to accommodate thicker doors, and the same cylinder converts between mortise, rim and key-in-lever types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing. Other lines answer door thickness with a separate part number per length: the Corbin Russwin 1070 is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 is a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A02 straight cam. That is the practical trade for a service van - one modular cylinder plus housings, or a separate cylinder for each length you might meet.
17) The interchangeable core housings are already in our doors. Do we buy complete cylinders or just cores?
That depends on what is in the door. The 26-091 is a complete mortise cylinder - full size interchangeable core, 6-pin, with a straight cam, cam number K510-730, brass body, non-handed, and two keys included. If the housings are already hung and the site runs BEST cores, the part you are replacing is the core itself: the BEST 1CB is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core, 7-pin, brass, 150 series. Pin count has to match the system you master key - the 26-091 is 6-pin, the 1C is 5-pin, the 1CDF is 7-pin - so check what the existing cores are pinned to before mixing.
18) Does the cylinder arrive keyed and ready to hand out, or does it need a locksmith first?
Read the keying line before you order. The 26-091 ships 1 bitted, which means it is set up for your locksmith to key it into the building system, and two keys come with it. A cylinder like the Falcon A23161-05 G is supplied keyed different with two cut keys, so it works out of the box on its own key but stands outside any master key system until it is rekeyed. If you are adding doors to an existing keyway and want them on the same key as the rest of the property, the 1 bitted cylinder is what a locksmith expects to receive; if the door is a one-off with its own key, a keyed different cylinder saves the bench time.
19) Can I use a residential handleset or deadbolt cylinder on a commercial mortise lock?
No - those are cut for different lock chassis entirely. The Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for an Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and the Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder. Each drives a tailpiece sized to its own lock. The 26-091 is a commercial mortise cylinder, 6-pin full size interchangeable core, with a straight cam, cam number K510-730, and it belongs in a mortise lock body or an exit bar. Match the cylinder to the lock chassis in the door, not to the key that happens to fit.
