Schlage 620/631 Series heavy-duty pushbuttons are commonly used to control ingress and/or egress of a door. 620 and 631 Series come standard with a momentary switch but feature many factory orderable options including delayed or maintained action and narrow stile faceplates. 1) Will the Schlage 623 pushbutton fit a single gang box?
Yes. The 623 heavy duty pushbutton mounts single gang, so it drops into a standard single gang box or ring behind the door release location. If you're working a narrow stile aluminum door where a single gang box won't fit the stile, order it with the narrow stile stainless steel plate option instead, which measures 1-3/4 x 4-1/2 inches.
2) Should I order a momentary, alternate action, or delayed action pushbutton for a door release?
For a normal request-to-exit or momentary door release, take the standard button: it makes contact only while pressed. Alternate action (maintained) latches on and stays on until pressed again, which is what you want to hold a door unlocked for a delivery window or a class change. Delayed pneumatic action holds the contact for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds after the press, so the door stays released long enough for someone to get through without anyone holding the button. All three are rated 3A at 30 VDC; the DA version uses form Z contacts.
3) Can the Schlage 623 pushbutton switch two circuits at once, like a maglock and an alarm shunt?
Order it with the DPDT option. Double pole double throw gives you two independent sets of contacts off one press, so one set drops the maglock and the other shunts the door contact or triggers an operator. One restriction: DPDT is not available with the delayed pneumatic action option, so if you need both two circuits and a timed release, take the DPDT and time the delay at the access control panel.
4) What is the difference between the Schlage 623RD pushbutton and the Locknetics IPB-100 illuminated pushbutton?
The Schlage 623 is a heavy duty pushbutton with a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button on a stainless steel faceplate with a translucent cone, and it comes standard with a momentary switch. The Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N are illuminated pushbuttons in the IPB Series. Both are wall mounted request-to-exit or door release buttons, so the choice usually comes down to button style and plate: the 623 gives a large mushroom head sized for a gloved hand or a quick palm strike, while the IPB Series is built around an illuminated button face. The 623 is a 12/24 VDC device, and its momentary contacts are rated 3A at 30 VDC.
5) What is the difference between the Schlage 621, 623, 625 and 631 pushbuttons?
Button size and construction are what separate them. The 621 has a 1-1/4 inch button, the 623 a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button, and the 625 a 2-3/4 inch mushroom head, all three on a stainless steel faceplate with a translucent cone. Bigger mushroom heads are easier to hit with an elbow, a cart, or a gloved hand, which is why the 625 shows up in hospitals and loading areas. The 631 is the outlier: a 1-1/4 inch metal button with a metal cone on an extreme-duty zinc faceplate, for abuse-prone openings. Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options are on the 621 and 623 only.

The illuminated version uses a 12-24 VDC LED drawing .025A at 28 VDC, wired separately from the switch contacts, and three LED colors are offered: green, yellow and red. Glow-in-the-dark needs no wiring at all, which is the simpler answer for a stairwell or an egress path where you just need the button located during a power loss.
7) I need a door release button that latches on and stays on instead of momentary. Can I use an illuminated pushbutton for that?
For a button that stays in the actuated state until pressed again, order the Schlage 623 with the alternate action/maintained option, rated 3A at 30 VDC. There is also a delayed pneumatic action option with a 0 to 60 second delay and form Z contacts, and a DPDT double pole double throw option for switching two circuits, though DPDT is not available together with the delayed action option. The Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N are illuminated pushbuttons in the IPB Series; illumination is a separate matter from switch action, so pick the switch behavior first and treat the lit face as a visibility choice on top of it.
