Schlage 620/631 Series heavy-duty pushbuttons are commonly used to control ingress and/or egress of a door. 620 and 631 Series come standard with a momentary switch but feature many factory orderable options including delayed or maintained action and narrow stile faceplates. 1) What switch action does the Schlage 621 pushbutton come with, and can I get a timed or maintained version?
Standard 621 ships as a momentary switch, rated 3A @ 30 VDC, so the contact closes only while the button is pressed. Two factory options change that: delayed pneumatic action (DA), adjustable 0 to 60 seconds with form Z contacts at 3A @ 30 VDC, and alternate action (AA), which is maintained so the button latches on until pressed again. Pick DA if you want the door released for a few seconds after a single press, AA if you want a hold-open or on/off state.
2) Will the 621 pushbutton fit a narrow aluminum door stile or does it need a wall box?
As standard the 621 is a single gang device, so it mounts in a single gang box or plate. For an aluminum storefront stile there is a factory narrow stile option with a 1-3/4 inch x 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate, which is the one glass front and storefront installers order. The button itself is 1-1/4 inch either way.
3) Can I switch two separate circuits with one 621 button, like a strike and an alarm shunt?
Yes, order the DPDT option (double pole, double throw), which gives you two independent sets of transfer contacts off the one press. One catch: DPDT is not available with the DA delayed action option, so you cannot have two-pole switching and a 0-60 second timed release in the same button. If you need both, put the timing in a separate relay or timer downstream.
4) What is the difference between the Schlage 621, 623, 625 and 631 pushbuttons?
All four are heavy duty door control buttons in the same family; the difference is the button and the faceplate. 621 has a 1-1/4 inch button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone. 623 steps up to a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button, and 625 to a 2-3/4 inch mushroom, both stainless plate and translucent cone. 631 keeps the 1-1/4 inch size but uses a metal button, metal cone and an extreme-duty zinc faceplate, which is the one to choose for abuse-prone or exterior openings. Glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options are offered on the 621 and 623 only.
5) What is the difference between the Schlage 621 pushbutton and the Locknetics IPB-100 illuminated pushbutton?
The Schlage 621 is a 1-1/4 inch button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone, wired at 12/24 VDC with a 3A @ 30 VDC momentary switch as standard, and is factory orderable with delayed action, alternate action/maintained, DPDT, or a narrow stile plate. The Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N belong to the IPB Series of illuminated pushbuttons, with the -N designating the narrow version. 6) What voltage does the Schlage 621 pushbutton run on?
The 621 works on 12/24 VDC. Switch contacts are rated 3A @ 30 VDC, and if you order the LED version the LEDs run 12-24 VDC at .025A @ 28VDC.
