1) Will the Schlage 621AL push to exit button fit a single gang box?
Yes. The 621AL mounts to a single gang opening, so it drops into a standard single gang box or ring behind the door. The button itself is 1-1/4 inches. If the mounting surface is a narrow aluminum stile rather than a wall, order the narrow stile option instead, which puts the switch on a 1-3/4 x 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate.
2) What voltage does the Schlage 621AL request to exit button run on?
12/24 VDC. The switch contacts are rated 3A at 30 VDC, and the LED draws .025A at 28 VDC. That covers the usual low voltage exit loop feeding a mag lock power supply or an access control panel input, but it is a DC device, so it is not the part for a 24 VAC circuit.
3) What is the difference between the momentary, delayed action and alternate action versions of the Schlage 621?
Three different switch behaviors, and you pick one when you order. Standard is momentary: the contacts make only while the button is held, which is what most mag lock exit buttons use with a timer downstream. Delayed pneumatic action (DA) holds the contacts for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds after the press, so the door stays released long enough to walk through without a separate timer, and it uses form Z contacts. Both are request-to-exit pushbuttons, but they come at illumination differently. 5) Which exit pushbutton should I use on a narrow aluminum storefront stile instead of a standard single gang button?
For a narrow stile aluminum door, order the 620 family button with the narrow stile stainless steel plate, which is 1-3/4 inches by 4-1/2 inches - the standard 621AL configuration is a single gang mount and a wide gang plate will not sit on a storefront stile. The Locknetics IPB-100 and IPB-100-N are IPB Series illuminated pushbuttons and are the alternative to look at when the requirement is a lit button rather than a narrow plate. Glass front installers generally decide this one on plate width first, then switch function: the 621AL is also available in delayed pneumatic action from 0 to 60 seconds, alternate action maintained, and DPDT, though DPDT cannot be combined with the delayed action option.
6) Can I get the Schlage 621 exit pushbutton with a double pole double throw switch?
Yes, DPDT is one of the ordering options, and it is what you want when one press has to do two things at once, for example drop a mag lock and trigger an alarm shunt or a door position input. One restriction: DPDT cannot be combined with the delayed pneumatic action option, so if you need both a timed release and two sets of contacts, the delay has to come from a separate timer.
7) I need a bigger exit button than the 1-1/4 inch one, what else is in the Schlage 620 family?
The 1-1/4 inch button is the 621. If you want something easier to hit with an elbow or a cart, the 623 uses a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button and the 625 a 2-3/4 inch mushroom button, both with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone. For abuse-prone openings, the 631 is a 1-1/4 inch metal button with an extreme duty zinc faceplate and a metal cone instead of the translucent one.
8) What is an alternative to the Schlage 621 illuminated exit pushbutton?
Locknetics makes the IPB-100 and IPB-100-N illuminated pushbutton from the IPB Series, which is the closest cross-brand equivalent for a lighted request to exit button. Where the Schlage 621 is specified is when you need the switch behavior chosen up front, momentary, 0 to 60 second delayed action, maintained, or DPDT, and a single gang mount.
9) Can the Schlage 621 button switch a mag lock directly or does it need a relay?
The contacts are rated 3A at 30 VDC, so for a typical 12 or 24 VDC mag lock the button can break the lock power line directly without an added relay, as long as the lock's current draw stays under 3A. Anything above that rating, or any line voltage load, has to go through a relay. The LED leg is separate and runs 12 to 24 VDC.
10) Will the Schlage 621 exit button match the other finishes on my doors?
Four finishes are offered. The standard is 630 satin stainless steel. If the rest of the hardware on the opening is chrome or bronze, there is SF-626 satin chrome, SF-625 bright chrome and SF-613 oil rubbed bronze, each on a heavy duty zinc faceplate. The 621AL is the engraved aluminum PUSH TO EXIT version.
11) Does the Schlage 621 pushbutton have a lighted or illuminated button?
The 621 uses a translucent cone with an LED behind it, and three LED colors are offered, green, yellow and red. The LED runs on 12 to 24 VDC and draws .025A at 28 VDC, so it needs a supply feed, not just dry contacts. Note that the extreme duty 631 in the same family uses a metal cone, which is not translucent.
