1) Will the Schlage Scan II motion sensor work as a request-to-exit device above my door?
That's exactly what the Scan II is built for. It's a passive infrared motion sensor for request-to-exit, mounted on the wall or the ceiling, and the coverage pattern is designed to hold up across the full mounting range rather than only at one height. Mounting height is 7 to 15 feet, indoors. Above a standard opening you're well inside that range.
2) Can I mount a Schlage Scan II on an exterior door or in an unheated garage?
No. The Scan II is an indoor-only detector, and the 7 to 15 foot mounting height spec is stated for indoor use as well. The high-impact ABS enclosure and the electronics inside will take -20 to 120 degrees F, but that's a survival range for an indoor location, not a rating for outdoor exposure. For an exterior opening or a wet location you need a sensor rated for it.
3) What voltage does the Schlage Scan II run on, and can I pull it off my existing access control power supply?
The Scan II takes 12 or 24 volts, AC or DC, so it drops onto most access control supplies without a separate transformer. Current draw when activated is 35 mA at 12 VDC, 38 mA at 24 VDC, 42 mA at 12 VAC, and 48 mA at 24 VAC. Budget 38 mAh for standby, and note there's no internal standby battery, so if your supply drops the detector drops with it.
4) Can a Schlage Scan II switch my maglock directly, or do I need a relay module?
The Scan II has two form C relay contacts on board, rated 2.0 amps at 30 VDC or VAC maximum for DC resistive loads. Two form C sets means you can break the lock power on one and send a shunt or status signal to the alarm panel on the other, off the same detection. Size your lock against that 2.0 amp ceiling; anything drawing beyond it needs an interposing relay.
5) Is the Schlage Scan II fail safe or fail secure?
Either one. Fail safe versus fail secure is field-selectable on the Scan II, so the same detector suits a maglock opening that has to release on power loss and a fail secure electric strike. You set it at install rather than ordering a different model.
6) How long does the Schlage Scan II hold the door unlocked after it sees someone?
Adjustable, from 0.5 seconds up to 64 seconds on the relay latch timer. There are also two relay modes: reset when the timer expires, or stay activated until motion stops. That second mode is the one you want on a slow-traffic opening or an accessible route, since the door stays released while somebody is still moving through rather than timing out on them.
7) Do I need a card reader as well as a Scan II motion sensor?
They do different jobs. The Scan II is a request-to-exit detector: it senses someone approaching from the secure side and releases the lock on the way out, with no credential presented. It does not read cards or identify anyone. Controlling who gets in from the outside is a separate device, such as the Securitron R100 surface mounted wireless card reader. A typical access-controlled opening runs both, a reader on the pull side and a request-to-exit sensor on the push side.
8) Can I aim the Scan II sensor so it doesn't trigger on people walking past the door?
The detection pattern adjusts +/- 14 degrees and locks in place, with separate settings for wall mounting versus ceiling mounting. That's enough to pull the pattern back off a cross-corridor or a lobby traffic lane while still covering the approach to the door. Set the wall or ceiling selection first, then trim the angle.
9) What is the difference between the Scan II-B and Scan II-W?
Color, and nothing else in the spec. Scan II-B is black and Scan II-W is white; both carry an externally visible activation LED so you can confirm detection from the floor without opening the housing. Pick against the ceiling or frame color at the opening.
10) Does the Scan II need a battery or backup power at the door?
No battery goes in the detector. The Scan II has no internal standby battery, and it needs 38 mAh for standby operation, so continuous power has to come from the access control supply feeding it. If the opening has to keep detecting through an outage, the battery backup belongs in the power supply, not at the sensor.
