Single gang and narrow stiles are available with numerous options which include heavy-duty plate, weather resistant cover (single gang size only), 2 LED lights – green/red, anti-tamper switch and Schlage Everest cylinder. in addition to the standard (630) satin stainless steel finish, there are three additional architectural finishes to choose from.

1) What does the 653-041 keyswitch actually do when you turn the key?
The Schlage 653-041 is a maintained-action keyswitch with counter-clockwise key turn. Maintained means the contacts stay switched when you turn the key and stay that way until you turn it back, so it's what you use to latch a door unlocked, disable an operator, or hold a mag lock released for a period. If you want the circuit to make only while the key is held, that's momentary action instead. The 650 Series magnetic spring design lets an installer reconfigure momentary versus maintained, and clockwise versus counter-clockwise, in the field.
2) Will a Schlage 650 Series keyswitch fit a narrow stile aluminum door frame?
Yes, if you order the narrow stile version. The narrow stile option comes with a 1-3/4 x 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate, which is what fits the tubular stile of a storefront door or the narrow face of an aluminum jamb. The standard build is single gang, sized for a single gang box in a wall or wide mullion. Note that the weather resistant cover is not offered with the narrow stile build.
3) What are the electrical ratings on the Schlage 653 keyswitch, and can it switch a mag lock or operator relay directly?
The standard keyswitch is rated 5 amp at 30 VDC with SPDT contacts. SPDT gives you a common, a normally open and a normally closed leg off one key turn, so you can break power to a mag lock on one side and trigger an operator or annunciator on the other. Stay within the 5 amp / 30 VDC rating; anything heavier goes through a relay. The unit is UL 294 Listed.
4) Can I use a Schlage 650 keyswitch outdoors on an exterior door?
There's a weather resistant cover option for exterior use, but it carries two restrictions: it fits a 1-1/8 inch cylinder only, and it is only available on the single gang size, not narrow stile and not the two-LED build. So if you need the switch outside, plan on single gang with a 1-1/8 inch cylinder. Ordering the 1-1/4 inch Everest cylinder package and the weather cover together will not work.
5) What is a momentary-action alternative to the Schlage 653-041 keyswitch?
The Schlage Electronics 653-041 is a maintained-action SPDT keyswitch, though the 650 Series magnetic spring design lets an installer reconfigure momentary or maintained action and clockwise or counterclockwise key turn in seconds.
