Schlage 650 Series keyswitches utilize an innovative magnetic spring design which allows installers to configure both clockwise and counterclockwise key turn direction as well as momentary or maintained action in seconds. Single gang and narrow stiles are available with numerous options which include heavy-duty plate, weather resistant cover (single gang size only), 2 LED lights – green/red, anti-tamper switch and Schlage Everest cylinder. in addition to the standard (630) satin stainless steel finish, there are three additional architectural finishes to choose from.

1) Can the Schlage 653-15 keyswitch be changed from momentary to maintained action in the field?
Yes. The Schlage 650 Series keyswitches use a patented magnetic spring design that lets the installer set both the key turn direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) and momentary or maintained action in seconds, right at the opening. So the 653-15 ships configured as clockwise momentary, but you are not locked into that if the door operator or mag lock circuit needs the other behavior.
2) Will a Schlage 650 Series keyswitch fit a narrow stile aluminum door, or only a single gang box?
Both are covered. The standard build is single gang, and there is a narrow stile option that comes on a stainless steel plate measuring 1-3/4 x 4-1/2 inches, which is what you want on an aluminum storefront stile or a tight jamb where a single gang plate will not land.
3) What are the electrical ratings on the Schlage 653 keyswitch, and will it switch a mag lock directly?
The standard 650 Series keyswitch is rated 5 amps at 30 VDC. That is a dry contact rating, so it handles a typical low voltage access control or mag lock circuit within those limits. Anything above 30 VDC or drawing more than 5 amps needs to go through a relay instead of the switch contacts.
4) Does the Schlage 653-15 keyswitch come with a cylinder and keys?
It depends on how you order it. One option supplies a 1-1/4 inch Schlage Everest mortise cylinder with two keys and a 1/8 inch spacer ring, and there is a keyed alike version of that same cylinder package if you are putting several switches on one key. Other option builds cover the anti-tamper switch, the dual LED build, the narrow stile plate, and the water resistant cover, so specify the cylinder line if you need the switch to arrive keyed.
5) Can I use a Schlage 650 Series keyswitch outdoors?
There is a weather resistant cover option, but read the limits before you spec it: the cover fits a 1-1/8 inch cylinder only, and it is not available with the narrow stile plate, the L2 dual LED build, or special finishes. It is offered in satin stainless steel, bright chrome, satin chrome, and oil rubbed bronze. If you need the narrow stile version outside, the cover is not an option on it.
6) I need both a key switch and a push plate at the same opening - is the Schlage 653-15 the right part?
The Schlage Electronics 653-15 is a keyswitch only, in a single gang installation. For an opening that needs a key release plus a push-to-activate control in one device, the BEA 10COMBOPLATE combines a jamb push plate with a maintained keyswitch in a double gang plate, and the BEA 10COMBOPLATEMOM is the same push plate and keyswitch combination with momentary operation. Choose the 653-15 when the key switch is the only control at that location and you want it on a Schlage Everest cylinder.
7) What finishes are available on the Schlage 650 Series keyswitch to match existing door hardware?
Four: 630 satin stainless steel (the standard), 626 satin chrome, 625 bright chrome, and 613 oil rubbed bronze. If you are standardizing a building on brushed stainless trim, 630 is the one that matches the typical commercial push plate and mortise trim.
8) Is the Schlage 650 Series keyswitch UL listed for access control?
Yes, the 650 Series keyswitches are UL 294 Listed, which is the access control system units standard your AHJ will look for on an electrified egress or entry circuit.
9) What is the anti-tamper switch option on the Schlage 653 keyswitch for?
It is an option build that adds a tamper switch so removal or prying of the plate can be reported back to the panel. It is available in all four finishes. If you want that signalling plus visual status at the door, the separate two LED (red/green) dual voltage 12/24 VDC option gives the user confirmation the circuit changed state.
10) Can I key several Schlage 650 keyswitches to my existing Schlage Everest system?
The cylinder supplied is a 1-1/4 inch Schlage Everest mortise cylinder with two keys and a 1/8 inch spacer ring, and a keyed alike version of that option is offered so a group of switches works off one key. Everest is a restricted Schlage keyway, so if your building is already on Everest the switch drops into the same system rather than adding a second key for staff to carry.
11) For a vandal-prone exterior door, how does the Schlage 653-15 compare with the BEA 10JAMBSWITCHONF?
Both are aimed at that condition from different directions. The BEA 10JAMBSWITCHONF is an access control keyswitch plate with a tamper-resistant design. The Schlage Electronics 653-15 addresses it through ordering options: an anti-tamper switch version, a heavy-duty plate, and a water resistant cover that fits a 1-1/8 inch cylinder only and is not available with the narrow stile, L2 or special finish configurations.
