Schlage L460P 626 IS-DND – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L460 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly what the L460 is built for. It is specified for 1-3/4 inch door thickness with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the small mortise case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, so the door needs a mortise pocket cut to that size. If your doors are thinner or thicker than 1-3/4 inches, this configuration is not the one to order.
2) Do I have to order the Schlage L460 left or right hand?
No handing to specify. The L460 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. What you do have to decide is which side the indicator reads on, since the interior (IS) and exterior (OS) indicator options are separate items.
3) Will the Schlage L460 latch the door, or do I still need a latchset on the opening?
Deadbolt only, thrown by key from outside or by the thumbturn inside. There is no latchbolt, so the door will not stay closed on its own. Schlage's L400 locks are used as the primary lock only where no latching is needed, like restrooms and utility doors, otherwise pair it with a passage latch or use it as an auxiliary bolt above an existing lock.
4) What strike and door prep does the L460 mortise deadbolt need?
It ships with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, and the frame prep follows ANSI 115.5. If your existing frame is cut for a radius corner strike or a different ANSI prep, plan on frame work or a strike change.
5) What cylinder and keyway comes on the Schlage L460, and can I key it into my existing system?
Standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway, single cylinder (key outside, thumbturn inside). Keying is selected when you order: keyed different, keyed alike across multiple locks, or no cylinder at all if you are supplying your own core or a house keyway. Anything unusual, like a specific keyway or master key system, goes in the special keying field.
6) What is an equivalent indicator deadbolt if the door is prepped for a bored deadbolt instead of a mortise pocket?
The Schlage L460 is a mortise lock, with a 4-7/16 inch x 3-5/8 inch x 1 inch case that has to drop into a mortise pocket. For a bored door prep, the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator function that fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both give you the same lock/unlock status display without cutting a mortise.
7) Which indicator lock should I use if the opening needs a latch as well as a bolt?
The Schlage L460 is deadbolt only, actuated by key or thumbturn, with no latching, so it is used where a separate latch or push/pull handles the door. If you need latching and indication in one unit, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock with indicator for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors and carries a fire rating, and the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and single cylinder deadbolt.
8) For a single-occupancy restroom, should I use the L460 indicator deadbolt or a privacy lever with an indicator?
Depends on whether the door also needs to latch. The L460 gives you a keyed override outside plus a thumbturn inside, but no latch, so it suits a restroom door that has a separate passage latch or a closer holding it shut. If you want one device that latches and shows status, look at a Grade 1 indicator privacy lever such as the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL (1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, fire rated) or the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series Grade 1 visual status privacy lock.
9) Can the exterior side of the L460 be non-keyed for an exit-only door?
Not as configured. The L460 is a keyed lock with a single cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. For a non-keyed occupancy bolt, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a VACANT/OCCUPIED indicator outside and no key cylinder, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
10) Can I order a run of L460 deadbolts all on one key for my building?
Yes. Keyed alike is one of the keying selections, so a batch can be ordered to operate on a single key, which is what most property managers want across a floor of utility or restroom doors. Keyed different is the standard if each door needs its own key. All units come in the S123 keyway with a conventional 6-pin cylinder unless you specify otherwise.
11) Is there a non-keyed indicator deadbolt alternative to the Schlage L460?
The L460 is keyed, single cylinder, with a conventional 6-pin S123 keyway cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. If the opening should not be key-operated at all, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside and is non-keyed, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 medium duty one-sided deadbolt with occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside.
12) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative if I want to stay at the same grade as the L460?
The Schlage L460 is Grade 1, heavy duty, commercial. Staying at Grade 1 with an indicator, the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn and a thumbturn x indicator function, and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty visual status lever lock. The Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator.
13) Are the Emtek indicator privacy bolts a substitute for a Schlage L460?
No. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended to be used with a brass passage set on residential-style openings. The Schlage L460 is a commercial Grade 1 keyed mortise deadbolt with a conventional 6-pin cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. If the specification calls for a keyed commercial mortise deadbolt, the Emtek bolts will not meet it.
14) What is a lighter-duty indicator deadbolt for a low-traffic interior door?
The Schlage L460 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial mortise deadbolt. For lower traffic, the Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with thumbturn x indicator function, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 medium duty deadbolt with occupancy indicator. Both give occupancy indication at a lighter operational rating than the L460.
15) I need the indicator readable from the corridor side. Which options show status on the outside?
The Schlage L460 is ordered with the indicator on either face: OS options read on the exterior in Do Not Disturb, Unlocked/Locked or symbols-only wording, and IS options read on the interior. Among alternatives, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with the Vacant/Occupied indicator on the outside, and the Falcon D271 places the occupancy indicator with the thumbturn inside function.
16) Which finishes does the L460 indicator deadbolt come in?
Four: 619 satin nickel, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, and 643E aged bronze. All four are offered with the interior indicator faces and the exterior ones, so you can match either side of the door to the rest of the trim on the opening.
17) Is the Schlage L460 deadbolt electrified or does it monitor anything?
Purely mechanical. The L460 has no electrical option and nothing to wire, so no access control tie-in, no request-to-exit and no monitoring contacts. Electrified functions in the L line are found in the L9000 mortise locks, not in the L400 deadbolt cases.
18) What is the L460 deadbolt case made of, and will it hold up in a high-traffic building?
The lock case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, rated heavy duty for commercial use. Schlage also builds an anti-saw pin into the deadbolt itself to resist cut-through attacks, which is the reason these get spec'd as auxiliary bolts on doors that already have a lock.
