Schlage L460L 626 IS-DND – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage L460 mortise deadbolt come with a cylinder, or do I have to order one separately?
The L460 ships less conventional cylinder, so the key cylinder is a separate line item. The standard cylinder called out for it is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway. On the order you pick keying: KD keyed different is the standard, KA keyed alike if you are tying several openings to one key, or None if you are supplying your own core or cylinder. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying instructions if the building runs a restricted or existing master system.
2) What strike does the L460 mortise deadbolt need in the frame?
It comes with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 by 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, prepped to ANSI 115.5. If your frame already has a standard ANSI 115.5 mortise strike prep, the lock drops into it. Frames with a radius corner prep will need the strike swapped or the opening filed to square.
3) Can the Schlage L460 be unlocked from outside with a key, or is it thumbturn only?
Both. The deadbolt is actuated by key or thumbturn, single cylinder: thumbturn inside, key outside. That is what separates it from a straight privacy bolt, and it is why it works on staff restrooms and small utility doors where you need staff override without a tool.
4) Does the L460 latch the door shut, or do I need a separate latch?
Deadbolt only, no latchbolt. The L400 family is meant as the primary lock where no latching is required, like restrooms and small utility doors, or as an auxiliary bolt above another lock. If the door has a closer and has to stay shut on its own, pair it with a passage latch or specify a lock function that includes a latchbolt.
5) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage L460 indicator deadbolt if the door is prepped for a cylindrical bore instead of a mortise pocket?
The Schlage L460 is a mortise lock with a 4-7/16 inch x 3-5/8 inch x 1 inch case, so it needs a mortise pocket in the door edge. If the door is bored for a cylindrical lock, the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 indicator deadbolt with ADA thumbturn is a Grade 1 thumbturn x indicator alternative, and the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator if you want the indicator built into a lever set rather than a separate bolt.
6) The L460 requires a key on the outside - what indicator deadbolt should I use on a restroom where no key is wanted outside?
The Schlage L460 is a keyed single cylinder deadbolt, operated by key outside and thumbturn inside. For a restroom or exit door where you do not want a cylinder outside, the Arrow E50 is a non-keyed Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator on the outside, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 one-sided deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside. Both give the same occupancy message to the corridor without a key override.
7) Does the Schlage L460 latch the door, or do I need something else to keep it closed?
The Schlage L460 is a deadbolt function only - the bolt is thrown by key or thumbturn and there is no latching. It is used where no latching is required or as an auxiliary bolt above a separate latching set. If you want one device that both latches and deadbolts, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy lever lock with a visual status indicator, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
8) Is a mortise indicator deadbolt like the L460 overkill for a restroom, or should I use a cylindrical indicator deadbolt instead?
The L460 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise deadbolt, so it needs a mortise pocket in the door edge. If the door is already prepped for a bored deadbolt and you do not want to route a pocket, a cylindrical indicator deadbolt is the simpler swap: the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical version covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Go mortise where the traffic is high or the spec calls Grade 1.
9) Is the Schlage L460 Grade 1 certified for a commercial spec?
Grade 1, and the L400 locks are tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. The catalogued ANSI/BHMA function number is E06071. It is a commercial, heavy duty product, built on cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating.
10) Can I order several L460 deadbolts keyed alike for one building?
Yes, KA keyed alike is a selectable keying option, so a run of restroom or utility doors can all take one key. KD keyed different is the default if each door needs its own. Since the lock ships less cylinder, you can also specify existing keyway or masterkeying requirements in the special cylinder field instead of taking the standard S123 keyway.
11) What is the difference between the Schlage L460 and the Hager 3216 indicator deadbolt?
Both throw a bolt with occupancy indication on a 1-3/4 inch door. The Schlage L460 is Grade 1, a mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 4-7/16 inch x 3-5/8 inch x 1 inch case, keyed outside with a conventional 6-pin S123 cylinder and thumbturn inside. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw. The L460 also lets you pick the indicator side and wording, including interior or exterior Vacant/Occupied, Unlocked/Locked, Do Not Disturb, or symbols only.
12) Can I use an Emtek indicator privacy bolt in place of the Schlage L460 on a commercial door?
They serve different markets. The Schlage L460 is a commercial Grade 1 mortise deadbolt built from CRS with zinc dichromate plating and keyed with a conventional 6-pin S123 keyway cylinder. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended to pair with a brass passage set - a privacy function, not a keyed commercial deadbolt. Choose the Emtek bolts for decorative privacy doors and the L460 where a keyed Grade 1 mortise bolt is specified.
13) What finishes does the Schlage L460 indicator deadbolt come in?
Four: 619 satin nickel, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, and 643E aged bronze. If the building is standardized on 626 satin chrome, that is the usual match to existing Schlage L Series trim and Von Duprin devices already in the openings.
14) Is the Schlage L460 indicator deadbolt electrified or access control ready?
No, it is a mechanical lock with no electrified option on this model. If you need request to exit, door position switching, or 12V/24V electrified operation, look at the L9000 electrified functions instead.
