1) Schlage L9000 electrified mortise lock: should I order EL or EU?
EL is Electrically Locking and EU is Electrically Unlocking. Energizing an EL body locks the outside lever, so cutting power leaves the outside lever free to enter (fail safe). Energizing an EU body releases the outside lever, so power loss leaves the door locked (fail secure). Fire alarm released stair and cross-corridor doors normally call for EL; card reader entrances and exterior doors normally call for EU. The useful part on the L283 is that EL/EU is customer selectable in the field, so a body that shows up set the wrong way for the sequence of operations gets switched on the job instead of returned.
2) Does the Schlage L283 electrified mortise lock need a 12V or a 24V power supply?
Either one works. The L283 body auto-detects 12V and 24V DC input, so there is no voltage version to pick at order time and no jumper or dip switch to set in the field. That matters on a retrofit where the existing power supply is 12V but the new panel runs 24V, or where a building has both. Bring DC to the door through the hinge or power transfer and the lock sorts out the rest.
3) Will a Schlage L9000 electrified mortise lock body fit a door already prepped for an L9000?
Mechanically, yes. The electrified body is the L9000 universal lock case with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise backset, so the mortise pocket, faceplate cutout and cross bore are the L9000 prep. What is new is the power path. The body comes out with a wiring harness, so the opening also needs 12V or 24V DC carried to the door through an electric hinge or a power transfer, and a raceway or cord loop in the frame. Budget the electrical work, not the woodwork.
4) Do I have to specify left hand or right hand when ordering a Schlage L9000 electrified mortise lock body?
No hand to call out. The L9000 electrified body is field reversible, so one part number covers both hands and the latch is turned on the job. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means a single shelf item instead of a left hand and a right hand of each function, and it means an emergency swap on a Sunday does not depend on which way the door swings.

The L Series is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with L9076 and L9077 the stated exceptions, and neither of those falls in the electrified function groups offered here (L9090/92/94, L9091/93/95, L9492/94). UL and cUL listing covers A label single doors to 4 by 10 feet and pairs to 8 by 10 feet. The body also carries a UL19X listing for single point locking applications, which is the one an inspector asks about when the mortise lock is the only locking device on the opening.
8) Does the Schlage L9000 electrified mortise lock meet a Grade 1 spec and Buy American requirements for a federal or state job?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, security and operational, and BAA compliant. It also holds ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and Miami-Dade NOA plus Florida Building Commission listings, which matters if the work is in a coastal Florida jurisdiction. Find the group your function sits in, then pick EL or EU and any switches (RX, LX, DPS, DBM) you need with it. The lever, rose and cylinder ordered on top are what set the final function at the door.
10) I need the deadbolt status reported back to the head end. Which Schlage L9000 electrified body do I order?
Deadbolt monitoring (DBM) is offered on the L9492/94 bodies, either on its own or together with RX and LX. The other electrified groups take RX, LX and DPS instead, and a door position switch only tells you the door is closed, not that the bolt is thrown, so DPS will not substitute if the requirement is bolt status. Schlage deadbolt functions also carry an anti-saw pin in the bolt against cut-through attacks.
11) We run Von Duprin exit devices in the building. Can the Schlage L Series mortise locks stay on the same keying suite?
Yes, the L Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so one keyway carries across mortise locks, exit device trim and multipoint openings. Keep in mind the electrified lock body itself ships non-keyed, so the suiting is set by the cylinder you order for it, not by the body.
12) Our school doors get abused. Can I get free-wheeling trim on an electrified mortise lock?
Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim is offered on most L Series functions, including the electrified ones. When the outside lever is locked it spins free rather than transmitting a kick or a hard pull into the lock case, which is the difference between a scuffed lever and a replaced lock body on a high traffic corridor. The case also uses a security blocking hub, so pulling the levers off does not open a path to pick the lock.
13) What finish do I order the Schlage L283 lock body in to match our other doors?
