Schlage L283-126 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I buy just the Schlage L9000 mortise lock body without the lever trim?
That is exactly what the L9000 Series lock case is: the mortise lockbody on its own, sold as a replacement part. Levers, roses, escutcheons and cylinders are not part of it, so if you are rebuilding an opening you keep the existing trim and swap the case. It is a commercial-duty part, CRS with zinc dichromate plating.
2) Which L Series function do I order the lock case for, and does one case cover more than one function?
You order the case by the function it serves, and Schlage groups several functions onto a single body. Storeroom L9080 and office L9050/L9060/L9070/L9071 each have their case; L9040/L9044 privacy, L9440/L9444, L9456/L9457/L9496, L9460/L9462/L9463/L9464, L9465/L9466/L9473, L9480/L9485/L9486 and the L460/L462/L463/L464/L480/L496 group all share bodies within those groupings. Single-function cases are listed for L9010, L9056, L9082, L9175, L9176, L9453, L9458, plus LV9453 and the LV9050/LV9060/LV9070/LV9071 vandal-resistant group, the L9090/L9092/L9094 group, and L9076/L9077. Match the function code stamped on your existing lock to the group and you have the right case.
3) Will a Schlage L9000 lock case fit my existing mortise pocket, or do I have to re-prep the door?
No re-prep. The L9000 case is a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise body, which is the standard L Series prep, so a case pulled out of an existing L9000 opening drops back into the same pocket and the same lever and cylinder holes. What changes the fit is the function group, not the pocket, so match the function code and the door is untouched.
4) Do I need to specify left hand or right hand when ordering a Schlage L9000 mortise lock case?
No handing to specify. The L9000 case is field reversible, so one part covers both hands and you set it at install. That matters for a maintenance shop stocking spares: one case on the shelf covers a left hand reverse and a right hand opening alike.
5) Does the Schlage L9000 lock case come keyed, and does it include a cylinder?
It ships non-keyed and without a cylinder. The case is the lock mechanism only, so you reuse the cylinder already in the opening or order one separately keyed to your system. For a property manager standardizing a building, that means the case swap does not disturb your existing keying at all.
6) Is the Schlage L9000 mortise lock Grade 1, and is it fire rated?
Grade 1, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for both security and operational. It is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft and pairs up to 8 ft x 10 ft. The letter F and the UL symbol on the latch front are how you confirm the listing on a part in hand. It also carries ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and meets ADA requirements. Note that with interchangeable core cylinders the assembly is Grade 2 security; with a concealed shell cylinder it holds A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security.
7) I need a fire rated mortise lock case for a 3-hour door. Which L9000 functions should I avoid?
Avoid the L9076 and L9077 case. Every other L9000 function is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, but those two are the stated exception. If the opening is a rated door, pick a different function group, and check for the letter F and UL symbol on the latch front to confirm the part you receive is the listed one.
8) Should I replace the whole Schlage mortise lock or just the lock case?
If the trim is sound and the failure is in the mechanism (latch not retracting, deadbolt binding, hub worn from lever abuse), the case alone is the repair. It is sold as a replacement part, the door prep does not change at 2-3/4 inch backset, and your levers, roses, escutcheons and cylinder stay in place along with the keying. Replace the complete lock instead when you are changing function beyond what the case group covers, or when the trim is damaged or you want a different lever design.
9) Can I change the function of a Schlage L9000 lock by swapping the case?
Within limits, yes. Schlage builds a universal lock case that supports 10 different functions from a single body, so some function changes are made in the case rather than by buying a whole new lock. Outside of that universal body, functions are grouped onto specific cases, so a change from one group to another means the corresponding case for the target function. The series carries 55+ standard functions in total.
10) Are Schlage L9000 vandal-resistant Vandlgard cases available separately?
Yes. The LV prefix functions are stocked as cases, covering LV9453 and the LV9050, LV9060, LV9070 and LV9071 group. Vandlgard is the free-wheeling outside trim option, so the outside lever rotates without transmitting force to the lock when it is locked. That is the case to specify for school corridors, dorms and any opening where levers get hung on.
11) Is the Schlage L9000 mortise lock Buy American Act compliant for a government job?
It meets BAA, the Buy American Act, which is what most federal and many state and municipal specs call for. The series also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings if the job is in a high-velocity hurricane zone, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1.
12) Will a Schlage L9000 case work with my Von Duprin exit devices and other L Series openings?
L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a building standardized on Schlage trim keeps a consistent look and lever feel across mortise locks and exit device trim. Since the case carries no trim of its own, whatever suiting you already have on the door is preserved through the swap.
13) Do the electrified L9000 lock cases need a specific voltage, and can I get request-to-exit or door position monitoring?
The electrified L Series locks auto detect 12V and 24V DC, so you do not have to order to a voltage. EL versus EU (fail secure versus fail safe) is customer-selectable rather than fixed at the factory. RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor are available options, and the electrified functions are UL19X listed for single-point locking applications. That covers most access control tie-ins without a second device on the door.
14) What is the Schlage L9000 lock case made of, and will it hold up in a high traffic building?
Cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, which is the corrosion-resistant finish Schlage uses on the internal case. Combined with A156.13 Grade 1 operational certification, that is the durability level for corridor, classroom and entry doors seeing constant cycling. Deadbolt functions also carry an anti-saw pin in the bolt, and a security blocking hub keeps the lock from being picked by pulling the levers off.
15) Can I get a high security cylinder on a Schlage L9000 mortise lock?
Yes, by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder, which gives the opening a UL437 listed locking cylinder. The cylinder is ordered separately from the case, so a lock case swap does not change your cylinder or your key system unless you choose to upgrade at the same time.
