Schlage L9070P 02B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9070 classroom mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep the L9070 is built for: 2-3/4 inch backset, 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the mortise pocket has to accept that body, and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches. If your existing opening is already prepped for an ANSI mortise lock at 2-3/4 backset, the case drops in. Doors thinner or thicker than 1-3/4 inches need a different door thickness option specified.
2) How does a Schlage L9070 classroom function lock actually work day to day for a teacher?
Key on the outside only. The latchbolt retracts by lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key, and it is unlocked again from outside by key. The inside lever is always free, so nobody is ever locked in. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. That means staff must step into the corridor with a key to lock the door, which is the classic F05 classroom arrangement.
3) Can I use the L9070 on a fire rated classroom door?
The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, and the L9070 is not one of those exceptions. UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs to 8 x 10 feet; the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms it in the field. The line is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Grade 1 Security and Operational, and meets ADA requirements.
4) Does the Schlage L9070 need to be ordered handed?
Yes, handing has to be specified. The L9070 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left or right hand (and whether it is a reverse bevel) before the order goes in. Get it wrong and the lever and latch face the wrong way for the swing. If you want a mortise body you can flip in the field instead, the BEST 45H public entrance lockbody is field reversible.
5) Which cylinder option should I pick on a Schlage L9070 if my building is on a small format interchangeable core system?
Four cylinder choices are offered: P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, J for Schlage FSIC less core, B for SFIC less prep core, and L for less conventional cylinder. On an SFIC house you order B and drop in your own cores; on a Schlage full size IC system order J. Note the grade consequence: with FSIC cores the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. The conventional cylinder keeps the full Grade 1 security rating. If you need a UL437 cylinder, a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder can be specified.
6) Will the Schlage L9070 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint, so a frame already prepped for an ANSI mortise strike takes it directly. Round corner frames or a different lip length for a deep frame reveal mean specifying the strike separately.
7) I need every classroom door in the building keyed the same. What do I specify on the Schlage L9070?
Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is the standard, KA keyed alike puts a group of locks on one key, or None if you are ordering less cylinder and supplying your own cores. For a master keyed campus, the free text field for special cylinder and keying requirements is where the keyway, master system and stamping instructions go. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway, so a building already on C keyway keys without a change.
8) Should I buy a mechanical classroom mortise lock or go electronic for classroom security lockdown?
The L9070 is a mechanical lock, no power, no batteries, no software, and it locks only with a key from the corridor side. That is the lowest cost per door and the one that never fails on a dead battery. If your lockdown plan requires locking from inside the room or from a central point, look at an electronic classroom mortise instead: the TownSteel FME-4000 Series is an electronic intruder classroom mortise lock with RFID on 1-3/4 inch doors, the TownSteel FME-2000 Series is Grade 1 classroom with RFID, and the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy is a Grade 1 classroom keypad mortise lock for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors.
9) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage L9070 classroom mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 from the ML2000 Series is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset - both are rated for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness the L9070 is built for. The Schlage L9070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lock in the L9000 Series with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard.
10) Which classroom mortise lock should I use if I want to lock the door from inside the room without opening it?
A keyed mechanical classroom lock like the Schlage L9070 is unlocked from the outside by key, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress - the key is used at the outside face. For lockdown from inside the classroom, the TownSteel FME-4000 Series is an electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology, Grade 1 and heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the BEST 45HCA heavy duty mortise lockbody is built with an intruder function.
11) What classroom mortise lock works on a door that is not 1-3/4 inch thick?
The Schlage L9070 is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. Where the door falls between 1-5/8 and 1-7/8 inches, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR Trilogy T2 and the DL3500CR Trilogy are Grade 1 classroom function mortise locks covering that range, both electronic keypad locks rather than key-only. The Hager 3800 Series mortise locks cover 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, though in passage and office functions rather than classroom.
12) What rose and escutcheon options work with a 1-3/4 inch door on the L9070?
Four trim choices: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon (for 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors), and N wrought escutcheon (for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors). All four cover a 1-3/4 inch door. Roses give a smaller footprint on the face; the escutcheons cover more of the door, which is worth having when you are replacing an older lock that left a larger prep or wear ring behind.
13) Do the Schlage L Series levers match the exit devices on my other doors?
They do. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a corridor with panic hardware on the stair doors and mortise locks on the classrooms can carry one lever design throughout. The lock also has the ability to suite across tubular, exit device and multipoint locks. This lock uses the 02 lever design.
14) Is the L9070 the right function for a storeroom or an office door, or do I need a different one?
Wrong function for either. Classroom means the outside lever unlocks and locks by key and stays whichever way you left it, so an office door that needs to be secured from inside or a storeroom that must always be locked wants something else. For storeroom, the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 mortise lock and the Cal-Royal NM8080 are storeroom function; for entrance/office, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch on 1-3/4 inch doors. The L Series itself covers over 55 functions if you want to stay with Schlage.
15) Is the Schlage L9070 heavy duty enough for a high traffic school corridor?
It is a heavy duty commercial lock, Grade 1 to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, and the description states the L9000 exceeds Grade 1 Security and Operational standards. The lock case substrate is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. A security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by pulling the levers off. That is the construction level specified for classroom and corridor doors that cycle all day.
16) Does the Schlage L9070 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. The L9070 is a latchbolt-only classroom lock with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes, which is what gives it security without a separate throw. If the opening needs a real deadbolt, that is a different function, or a separate mortise deadbolt such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
17) Does the Schlage L9070 qualify for a government job with Buy American requirements?
The L Series meets the Buy American Act. It also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings for hurricane zone work, is ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and UL listed, and California Referenced Standards Code compliance applies to levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less.
18) What is the difference between a classroom mortise lock and a storeroom mortise lock?
On the Schlage L9070 classroom function, the latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside is locked by key, and the outside is unlocked again by key - so the outside lever can be left unlocked for normal passage. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever fixed at all times and retracts the latch only by key: the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors.
19) What replaces a keyed classroom mortise lock if we want to stop issuing keys?
The Schlage L9070 is a mechanical, non-electronic keyed classroom mortise lock using a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Credential-based classroom mortise locks in the same Grade 1 heavy duty class for 1-3/4 inch doors include the TownSteel FME-2000 Series with RFID technology and the FME-4000 Series electronic intruder classroom lockset, also RFID. The Accentra nexTouch NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override.
20) Can a Sargent 4874 or Kaba Ilco 185 mortise deadbolt be used in place of a classroom mortise lock?
No - those are deadbolts only and carry no lever or latchbolt. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock with no handing. The Schlage L9070 is a handed classroom lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side and whose inside lever stays free for immediate egress, which a deadbolt cannot provide.
21) What mortise lock suits a corridor or dormitory door rather than a classroom?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. For an office or entrance opening, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Schlage L9070 is set up as a keyed single cylinder classroom lock.
22) Which mortise lock takes an interchangeable core instead of a conventional cylinder?
The Schlage L9070 is ordered with the cylinder prep built in: B for SFIC less prep core, J for Schlage FSIC less core, L for less conventional cylinder, or P for a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Among comparable mortise locksets, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset offered with an interchangeable core option, and the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override.
23) Is a Baldwin 6310 mortise lock a substitute for a Schlage classroom mortise lock?
They will not swap into the same door prep. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset, while the Schlage L9070 is a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Baldwin 6310 is also an entrance/storeroom function for 1-3/8 inch and over doors, offered knob by knob or, as the 6310190RRLS, right hand reverse lever by lever. The L9070 is a classroom function lock with the 02 lever on 1-3/4 inch doors.
24) What mortise lockset should be specified for a behavioral health or ligature resistant opening?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel, passage function, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the satin stainless steel ligature resistant arch trim version, also passage. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset in satin stainless, ligature resistant and ADA compliant. Those are all passage function; the Schlage L9070 is a keyed classroom lock with the 02 lever.
25) Which mortise lock do I use on a classroom door that needs to be released from an access control system?
The Schlage L9070 is a mechanical lock with no electronic operation. For electrified mortise locking, the Command Access ML190 Series is a motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in a heavy-duty storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW Series is a wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating.
26) What finishes does the Schlage L9070 come in for matching existing school hardware?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel, and 643E aged bronze. For institutional corridors 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the usual standards, and both are here, so matching an existing fleet is a matter of reading the BHMA number off one of your current locks.
27) What mortise lock is used for a restroom or privacy door in the same building as classroom locks?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath mortise lockset with a deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset covering 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors - the same 2-3/4 inch backset the Schlage L9070 uses. The Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock is a Grade 1 heavy duty privacy function with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors.
28) What mortise lock goes on a corridor door next to a classroom where no key is needed?
For an always-open opening, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock in the MA Series with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, the 3810S with rose trim and the 3810E with escutcheon. The Schlage L9070 is keyed and handed rather than field reversible.
29) Are Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to a Grade 1 commercial classroom mortise lock?
No. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function, meaning the trim does not operate a latch at all. The Schlage L9070 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty keyed classroom mortise lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside is locked by key.
